Alan Moore’s Miracleman: Harbinger of the Modern Age of Comics Jeremy Larance Introduction On May 26, 2014, Marvel Comics ran a full-page advertisement in the New York Times for Alan Moore’s Miracleman, Book One: A Dream of Flying, calling the work “the series that redefined comics… in print for the first time in over 20 years.” Such an ad, particularly one of this size, is a rare move for the comic book industry in general but one especially rare for a graphic novel consisting primarily of just four comic books originally published over thirty years before- hand. Of course, it helps that the series’ author is a profitable lumi- nary such as Moore, but the advertisement inexplicably makes no reference to Moore at all. Instead, Marvel uses a blurb from Time to establish the reputation of its “new” re-release: “A must-read for scholars of the genre, and of the comic book medium as a whole.” That line came from an article written by Graeme McMillan, but it is worth noting that McMillan’s full quote from the original article begins with a specific reference to Moore: “[Miracleman] represents, thanks to an erratic publishing schedule that both predated and fol- lowed Moore’s own Watchmen, Moore’s simultaneous first and last words on ‘realism’ in superhero comics—something that makes it a must-read for scholars of the genre, and of the comic book medium as a whole.” Marvel’s excerpt, in other words, leaves out the very thing that McMillan claims is the most important aspect of Miracle- man’s critical reputation as a “missing link” in the study of Moore’s influence on the superhero genre and on the “medium as a whole.” To be fair to Marvel, for reasons that will be explained below, Moore refused to have his name associated with the Miracleman reprints, so the company was legally obligated to leave his name off of all advertisements. -

PRIVILEGED ATTORNEY-CLIENT COMMUNICATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SECOND AMENDED AND RESTATED LICENSE AGREEMENT (“SPIDER-MAN”) CREATIVE ISSUES This memo summarizes certain terms of the Second Amended and Restated License Agreement (“Spider-Man”) between SPE and Marvel, effective September 15, 2011 (the “Agreement”). 1. CHARACTERS AND OTHER CREATIVE ELEMENTS: a. Exclusive to SPE: . The “Spider-Man” character, “Peter Parker” and essentially all existing and future alternate versions, iterations, and alter egos of the “Spider- Man” character. All fictional characters, places structures, businesses, groups, or other entities or elements (collectively, “Creative Elements”) that are listed on the attached Schedule 6. All existing (as of 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that are “Primarily Associated With” Spider-Man but were “Inadvertently Omitted” from Schedule 6. The Agreement contains detailed definitions of these terms, but they basically conform to common-sense meanings. If SPE and Marvel cannot agree as to whether a character or other creative element is Primarily Associated With Spider-Man and/or were Inadvertently Omitted, the matter will be determined by expedited arbitration. All newly created (after 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that first appear in a work that is titled or branded with “Spider-Man” or in which “Spider-Man” is the main protagonist (but not including any team- up work featuring both Spider-Man and another major Marvel character that isn’t part of the Spider-Man Property). The origin story, secret identities, alter egos, powers, costumes, equipment, and other elements of, or associated with, Spider-Man and the other Creative Elements covered above. The story lines of individual Marvel comic books and other works in which Spider-Man or other characters granted to SPE appear, subject to Marvel confirming ownership. -

August 23–28, 2016 St. Petersburg, Russia EACS 2016 21st Biennial Conference of the European Association for Chinese Studies Book of ABStractS 2016 EACS- The European Association for Chinese Studies The European Association for Chinese Studies (EACS) is an international organization representing China scholars from all over Europe. Currently it has more than 700 members. It was founded in 1975 and is registered in Paris. It is a non-profit orga- nization not engaging in any political activity. The purpose of the Association is to promote and foster, by every possible means, scholarly activities related to Chinese Studies in Europe. The EACS serves not only as the scholarly rep- resentative of Chinese Studies in Europe but also as contact or- ganization for academic matters in this field. One of the Association’s major activities are the biennial con- ferences hosted by various centres of Chinese Studies in diffe- rent European countries. The papers presented at these confer- ences comprise all fields from traditional Sinology to studies of modern China. In addition, summer schools and workshops are organized under the auspices of the EACS. The Association car- ries out scholarly projects on an irregular basis. Since 1995 the EACS has provided Library Travel Grants to support short visits for research in major sinological libraries in Western Europe. The scheme is funded by the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation and destined for PhD students and young scholars, primarily from Eastern European countries. The EACS furthers the careers of young scholars by awarding a Young Scholar Award for outstanding research. A jury selects the best three of the submitted papers, which are then presented at the next bi-an- nual conference. -

Vol. 32.2: 113-151 thomas j. mazanec How Poetry Became Meditation in Late-Ninth-Century China abstract: In late-ninth-century China, poetry and meditation became equated — not just meta- phorically, but as two equally valid means of achieving stillness and insight. This article discusses how several strands in literary and Buddhist discourses fed into an assertion about such a unity by the poet-monk Qiji 齊己 (864–937?). One strand was the aesthetic of kuyin 苦吟 (“bitter intoning”), which involved intense devotion to poetry to the point of suffering. At stake too was the poet as “fashioner” — one who helps make and shape a microcosm that mirrors the impersonal natural forces of the macrocosm. Jia Dao 賈島 (779–843) was crucial in popularizing this sense of kuyin. Concurrently, an older layer of the literary-theoretical tradition, which saw the poet’s spirit as roaming the cosmos, was also given new life in late Tang and mixed with kuyin and Buddhist meditation. VOLUME TWO 312 CHAPTER SEVEN BARBARISM AND RELIGION If Gibbon's work gave classical expression to the nqtion of Rome's decline and fall, it did not close the great debate on the end of the ancient world. To some admiring contemporaries he seemed to have said the last word and he long remained without significant challenge. But eventually new questions and fresh evidence led to a diversity of answers and emphases. Perhaps only the assumption contained in his title still seems reasonably certain, though even the appropriateness of 'fall' in relation to the Western Empire has raised doubts. In discussing an aspect of the perennial question two centuries after Gibbon had gazed on the ruined greatness of the imperial city, Arnaldo Momigliano expressed satisfaction that he could at least begin with that 'piece of good news': 'it can still be considered an historical truth that the Roman Empire declined and fell'} There, however, agreement seemed to end and even when attention is confined to Gibbon's own contribution to the debate, there is divergence of opinion as to what constitutes the theme and crux of his version of Rome's decline and fall. -

Records of the Transmission of the Lamp

The Records of the Transmission of the Lamp is a religious classic of the first importance for the practice and study of Zen which it is hoped will appeal both to students of Buddhism and to a wider public interested in religion as a whole. Yet the bright search light of our scholars, shining down from two thousand years above, has been unable to penetrate definitively into this dark lumber room, hallowed, obscure and mysterious. In any case, the back end of this basement, littered with the ancient paraphernalia of a distant transmission, opens out still further to an even earlier epoch in Central Asia, where everything has long been buried under millennia of sands. The lives traced out in the CDL are not really biography nor are they hagiography. The term hagiography is in any case inappropriate, as it applies to Christian male ecclesiastics who the Church wished to sanctify, often after having martyred them first. Yet ever since Bodhidharma faced Emperor Wu of Liang, holiness in Chan Buddhism has had something of a malodorous air about it; no holiness in the hyper-realm of śūnyatā. If the life-paths recorded in the CDL are neither hagiographies nor biographies, what to style them? Perhaps they are just expedients, pointers to practice. -
Chan Buddhism in Guanxiu's Eighteen Luohan (Arhats)
60 • Wittenberg University East Asian Studies Journal Painting the Void: Chan Buddhism in Guanxiu’s Eighteen Luohan (Arhats) Maleah Christine Miller Maleah, from Honolulu, HI, attends Kenyon College and graduates in 2020. She is a participant of Kenyon’s Women’s Volleyball team, and studies fine and studio arts. Though many religious traditions find complement, representation, and focus in artistic practice, there is perhaps no more fitting example of the interconnected lifeblood of the two disciplines than Chinese painter Guanxiu’s Eighteen Luohan. Composed by a Chan Buddhist master acting on inspiration imparted to him through divine dreams, this series of eighteen hanging scrolls is both a depiction of great spiritual masters and an invitation to join their ranks. A departure in style from previous Chan works, Eighteen Luohan displays in ink and light color each of the eighteen named followers of the Buddha in a moment of repose in nature. Each occupies his own silk hanging scroll and is pictured performing a different meditative practice, composing his limbs in a symbolic mudra or reading a bit of sacred script. In seeming stark contrast to their restful bodily positions, the enlightened masters bear the marks of lives of strict ascetic devotion to the Buddha; their limbs are scarred and hobbled, with their thin skin stretched tightly over worn bones. Rather than inviting pity or scorn, these wasted figures, so contrary to contemporary ideals of beauty, are meant to inspire their viewers. Though not considered a sacred text or image, Eighteen Luohan serves as sublime meditation nonetheless, providing a throughway from the artist’s immense spiritual power to that of his subjects in a warm, optimistic embrace of the Buddha spirit and all who seek to realize it.
