It was Prof. Egan who first introduced Night Chats from Chilly Hut to me as a possible research focus, and he encouraged me to continue even when anyone else in their right mind would have given up on me. I will never forget the hours of delightful one-on-one close reading sessions we had together at UCSB. He ensured that I had the funding and the time to pursue language study and research in some of the best programs in Asia. After his move to Stanford University, Prof. Egan continued to provide timely help long beyond the call of duty. His subtle corrections and probing questions over the years have been integral to my completing this project and inspiring me to develop as a scholar. Any oversights and inaccuracies that remain in my work are undeniably my own. I would also like to thank the other two members of my committee, Xiaorong Li and Hsiao- jung Yu, as well as several faculty members in the department of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies who have assisted me during my degree. Prof. Li, who kindly joined my committee after my field exams, gave me broad questions to consider that were crucial in helping frame my project, and she provided invaluable feedback on my chapter drafts and translations. Prof. Yu supervised my sub-field in Chinese language pedagogy, going out of her way to ensure that I had up-to-date training. Her dedication to students will always be an inspiration. I am also grateful to Xiao-bin Ji, a brilliant but humble scholar of Chinese history, for supervising my subfield in Song dynasty history. Additionally, I am appreciative of Thomas Mazanec, who provided a range of support, from commenting on paper abstracts to giving citation advice, not to mention the crucial role that his research on Tang poet- monks played in providing context for my research. To Katherine Saltzman-Li, I offer heartfelt gratitude for her timely intervention during a period of academic isolation and the guidance she has provided during the last years of my degree, done out of the kindness of her heart. v I benefited from Zhou Yukai’s extensive study of the interaction between Tang-Song literature and Chan Buddhism and his specialized interest in Huihong. I was fortunate to spend six months taking classes and tutorials offered by Prof. Zhou at Sichuan University. He patiently listened and responded to all my questions, from clarifications about the odd circumstances of Huihong’s ordination to cryptic allusions in Night Chats. His graduate students later told me that he had given me the nickname “Study-fiend” 學霸子. There are many other scholars who have assisted me through my graduate studies. I met Jason Protass and Christopher Byrne at an Association of Asian Studies conference and felt for the first time I had found “my people.” Prof. Protass has since offered invaluable advice as I explore issues around the poet-monk, and it was an offhanded question from him that drove my research for one of my chapters.     Une ardente alchimie ou l’immortalité par les cuisines. Vincent DURAND-DASTÈS Le statut des femmes dans les religions chinoises est, comme dans bien des systèmes religieux du monde, marqué par l’ambiguïté. Les femmes sont frappées d’infériorité à bien des égards, car considérées comme pouvant être rituellement impures et admises en portion relativement congrue dans la plupart des clergés. Pourtant, les religions chinoises comptent un nombre appréciable de déesses, qui occupent des positions parfois tout à fait éminentes, et toutes sortes de « spécialistes religieux » de sexe féminin, tout à fait indispensables à la vie religieuse des communautés, tels les medium et exorcistes. Certaines de ces prêtresses dirigèrent d’importants mouvements religieux, qui, s’étendant parfois à plusieurs comtés ou provinces, inquiétèrent sérieusement les autorités. Par ailleurs, en Chine comme en bien d’autres lieux, les fidèles de sexe féminin comptaient pour une grande partie de la « clientèle » des monastères et lieux de culte. Pourtant, une morale officielle prônant la stricte séparation des sexes tenta à maintes reprises d’écarter les femmes de l’activité religieuse, du moins lorsque celle-ci impliquait pour elles de franchir les limites de leur maisonnée1. Ecoutons par exemple ce discours tenu par le personnage d’un roman chinois du XVIIe siècle à un groupe de femmes qu’il a eu la surprise de rencontrer sur le chemin d’un temple où elles comptent faire leurs dévotions : 「是誰家沒禮義男子,放縱閨門婦女外游?有這等不知羞婦女,借口燒香,庵觀混雜。雖 然是釋門,清淨慈悲,普度善男信女,只恐藏奸導欲,引惹市井無賴頑心。女菩薩有這善 心,何不守婦道,不出閨門,在家堂焚香拜聖;何必瞞丈夫,信僧尼,入寺觀,出身露面 ,見像焚修! 」 « Quelle est donc cette famille dont les hommes, sans principes ni bienséance, laissent leurs femmes se promener librement ? Et quelles femmes sans vergogne, qui prétextent un pèlerinage pour aller se plonger dans la promiscuité des temples ou des ermitages !     Chinese Models for Chōgen’s Pure Land Buddhist Network Evan S. Ingram Chinese University of Hong Kong The medieval Japanese monk Chōgen 重源 (1121–1206), who so- journed at several prominent religious institutions in China during the Southern Song, used his knowledge of Chinese religious social or- ganizations to assist with the reconstruction of Tōdaiji 東大寺 after its destruction in the Gempei 源平 Civil War. Chōgen modeled the Buddhist societies at his bessho 別所 “satellite temples,” located on estates that raised funds and provided raw materials for the Tōdaiji reconstruction, upon the Pure Land societies that financed Tiantai天 台 temples in Ningbo 寧波 and Hangzhou 杭州. Both types of societ- ies formed as responses to catastrophes, encouraged diverse mem- berships of lay disciples and monastics, constituted geographical networks, and relied on a two-tiered structure. Also, Chōgen devel- oped Amidabutsu 阿弥陀仏 affiliation names similar in structure and function to those used by the “People of the Way” (daomin 道民) and other lay religious groups in southern China. These names created a collective identity for Chōgen’s devotees and established Chōgen’s place within a lineage of important Tōdaiji persons with the help of the Hishō 祕鈔, written by a Chōgen disciple. Chōgen’s use of religious social models from China were crucial for his fundraising and leader- ship of the managers, architects, sculptors, and workmen who helped rebuild Tōdaiji. A decade later, however, the global village still faces the continued reality of suffering, whether it is the slaughter of innocents in politically volatile regions, the ongoing economic crisis that currently roils the world financial system, or repeated natural disasters. Buddhism has always taught that the world is inherently unstable and its teachings are rooted in the perception of the three marks that govern all conditioned existence: impermanence, suffering, and non-self. A good translation of a Chinese verse can promote the prevalence of Chinese culture. In the translation of Chinese poetry, translators should not only keep the characteristics of Chinese poems, but also embody the English characteristics. This article analyzed some versions of translation and proposed factors affecting the translation of Chinese poetry. Keywords: Chinese Poetry, Translation, Contrast 1. Introduction Chinese poetry is one of the most important parts in Chinese literature. Since The Book of Odes, the first poetry collection written by Confucius in the spring-autumn period was known by people, Chinese poetry has developed quickly. In the Tang Dynasty, Chinese poetry was at its peak. In this period, many immortal poems were written and had great influence on the later Dynasties. In the later Dynasties, Chinese poetry went on its development. But because of the development of other literary styles—Yuan Songs (drama created mainly in Yuan Dynasty), novels, and essays, poetry is no longer the major literary style. In this article, I’d like to talk about the contrast of Chinese and English in the translation of Tang-poems. Tang-poems has very strict phonological format. In each stanza, there are five (in quatrains) or seven (in regulated verses) words. Using limited words to express unlimited sense is the major characteristic of Chinese poetry.
