Uğur ÖZDEMĠR 11.05.2011 ÖNSÖZ Ġnsanların birbirlerinden farklı hissiyat ve fikriyata sahip oluĢları onların dini alanda da farklılaĢmasını beraberinde getirmiĢtir. Bu sebeple inanıĢların farklılaĢması daha ilk insandan itibaren baĢlayan bir süreçtir. Bu süre zarfında diğer insanların inanması arzusuyla çeĢitli iddiaları dile getiren insanların ortaya çıkıĢı da bilinen bir gerçektir. Bu kiĢiler kendilerinde „kutsal‟ bilgilerin olduğunu iddia etmiĢlerdir. Diğerler insanlarında kendilerine inanmaları için iddialarını yayma gayretinde bulunmuĢlardır. Yakın zamanda da bu iddiaların benzerlerini dile getiren birçok oluĢum ve akımdan da bahsetmek mümkündür. Günümüzde ise ilk hareket noktaları ve ortaya çıkıĢ gayeleri farklı olan bu akımların ortak hedeflerinin bulunduğunu belirtebiliriz. Bu hedefi ise modernitenin ve ferdiyetçiliğin yalnızlaĢtırdığı kalabalıklar olarak zikredebiliriz. GörülmüĢtür ki Yeni Çağ Dini Akımlar ortaya çıktıkları coğrafyalarda yayılmalarının yanı sıra yeni müntesip kazanma konusunda ve farklı alanlara ulaĢmada klasik dinler kadar maharetli olduklarını ortaya koymuĢlardır. Ülkemizde de bu akımların faaliyetlerini artırarak sürdürdükleri bilinen bir gerçektir. Buna ilaveten yurtdıĢında yaĢayan vatandaĢlarımıza yönelik özel gayretlerin olduğu ise „Ģahit‟ olunan bir vakadır. Bu sebeple Yeni Çağ Dini Akımların sosyal hayatımızdaki etkisi giderek artan bir haldir.Buna rağmen haklarında araĢtırma ve incelemelerin eksikliği bariz bir Ģekilde göze batmaktadır. „Yeni Çağ Dini Akımlar‟ konusu, ilahiyat camiası açısından yeni karĢılaĢılan bir problem olarak akademik çerçevede teolojik açıdan üzerinde durulmaya değer bulunmuĢtur. Her ne kadar ülkemiz akademik camiasında dinler tarihi, dinler psikolojisi ve sosyolojisi gibi alanlarda kısıtlı birkaç araĢtırmanın varlığından bahsedilecek olsa dahi bu akımların teolojisine yönelik bir çalıĢmanın olmadığını özellikle belirtmeliyim. Alanında ilk olan bu çalıĢma tabiidir ki hacminin üzerinde bir yükün altına girmiĢtir. Bu sebeple araĢtırmanın bazı eksiklikler barındıracağını peĢinen kabul etmeliyim. Bu çalıĢma konusunu seçmemde ve akabinde çalıĢmanın hazırlanması aĢamasında yardımlarını hiçbir Ģekilde esirgemeyen danıĢman hocam Prof. Dr. Ramazan BĠÇER‟e teĢekkürlerimi sunmayı bir borç bilirim. Bu akımların teolojik olarak içinden geldikleri dinlerden hangi sebeplerle farklılaĢma yaĢadıklarını değerlendirilmiĢtir. Türkiye‟de yeni yeni örgütlenmelerini görülen Yeni Çağ Dini Akımlarını içinden geldikleri kültür, geliĢtikleri ortam ve sahiplendikleri felsefi ve teolojik özellikler ekseninde ele alınmıĢtır. ÇalıĢmada öncelikle temel terimler tespit edilerek tanımlama ve tanımlama problemi incelenmiĢtir. Tanımlama problemi ile beraber bir tasnif problemi yaĢandığı tespit edilmiĢtir. Ayrıca Yeni Çağ Dini Akımların toplumun, hem inanç hem de sosyolojik olarak en kırılgan tabakasını oluĢturduğu savı ile bu kırılganlığın sosyolojik ve teolojik sebeplere değinilmiĢtir. Bu aĢamada ele alınan akımların temel özellikleri sıralanmıĢtır. Akımları tasnif alanında iki metodun varlığı dikkatlere sunulmuĢtur. Bu tasniflerden David Barrett‟in takip ettiği „Akımları Müntesibi olduğu Kültür Havzasına „ göre değerlendirmedir. Bir diğeri ise Melton‟un takip ettiği hem kültür havzasına hem de yayıldığı alana itibar edilen

    1 Demanding the Angels’ Share: Intellectual Property and Spiritual Organization in the Urantia Foundation Andrew Ventimiglia PhD Candidate, Cultural Studies Graduate Group University of California – Davis Email: [email protected] / Tel: 347-247-5830 2 Demanding the Angels’ Share: Intellectual Property and Spiritual Organization in the Urantia Foundation Abstract: This article explores the role that intellectual property plays as it shapes the circulation and use of ‘The Urantia Book,’ a divinely revealed text published in 1955 and embraced by a community of believers. For many modern spiritual communities – of which the Urantian community is a telling example – their coherence no longer lies in a centralized institution like the church but instead in a shared dedication to sacred texts and other religious media. Thus, intellectual property has become an effective means to administer the ephemeral beliefs and practices mediated by these texts. This article explores a number of the Urantia Foundation’s cases to demonstrate how intellectual property law can be used to maintain and adjudicate social relations rather than simply determining the proper allocation of ownership over a contested good. This project uses the legal battles of the Urantia Foundation as an opportunity to examine how religious communities ethically justify forms of ownership in religious goods and to highlight the incongruities between theories of authorship, originality and ownership within spiritual communities and those embedded in the law. Further, by focusing on intellectual property in the religious world, I seek to answer the question: does religion belong to the public domain?     The Encyclopedia of New Religions Bibliography The following bibliography has been constructed to enable readers to explore selected topics in greater depth. Rather than present a long uncategorized list, which would have been unhelpful and potentially confusing, the classification of literature mirrors the format of the book. (Classifying new religions and spiritualities is a notoriously difficult problem, and it should not be thought that groups that have been bracketed together do not have important differences.) In a few instances a movement may be relevant to more than one section; hence readers are advised to look in other sections if they cannot instantly locate the sought material. Anyone who compiles a bibliography on new spiritualities has to make choices, since there is a vast array of literature available. While endeavouring to include a good range of material and viewpoints, we have omitted material that we consider to be badly inaccurate or misleading. However, some religious movements have been virtually neglected by writers and hence the material indicated below is the best available. For some groups there is virtually no literature apart from their own writings. While we have aimed to incorporate material on the grounds of accessibility, quality, up-to-dateness, popularity and prominence, inclusion here does not necessarily imply endorsement by the editor or individual authors. Murray The purpose of this dissertation is to propose that exploratory thinking (or the use of wonder) can serve as an effective alternative to exclusive thinking and improve the functioning of critical reason within ideological frameworks. In the first half, I explore the ways in which current ideals and values in America– including the view of God as a Supreme Being, belief in the dualism between humanity and divinity, and current practices of exclusive religion and nationalism– intensify cultural strife by increasing social dichotomization and decreasing the influence of critical reason. In the first chapter, I discuss four interrelated signs that serve as strong indicators of escalating global conflict: greater attention to exclusive religion and nationalism, stronger ties between church and state, increasing social extremism, and the diminishing influence of reason.
