El Templo Mayor De México Tenochtitlan Según Los Informantes Indígenas EL TEMPLO MAYOR DE MÉXICO TENOCHTITLAN SEGúN LOS INFORMANTES INDÍGENAS Por ALFREDO LÓPEZ AUSTl" Corazón de la gran capital azteca fue el Templo Mayor. La voluntad de Huitzilopochtli lanzaba sus dardos hacia los cua­ tro rumbos desde el más elevado de todos los edificios del recinto, y ahí confluían la gloria y el poder, la riqueza y el fausto de los mexicanos. El muro circundante enmarcaba el si­ tio en el que el pueblo entero hacía coincidir su destino, ahí donde los corazones vibraban intensamente en el máximo fu­ ror religioso o dejaban de latir para siempre, con la esperanza excelsa de la elevación a la morada del Sol. Hoy casi nada queda de él; el conquistador asoló todo lo que pudiera hacer volver al vencido a su razón máxima de ser. Pero manos cuidadosas, guiadas por el conocimiento de nues­ tro pasado y por la inspiración artística, se dieron a recons­ truir una pequeña imagen de aquel coloso de fe. En el mismo sitio donde se irguió un día, Ig11acio Marquina, Carmen de Antúnez y Manuel Calderón Peza levantaron una maqueta de veinticinco metros cuadrados, ante la que el visitante puede recrearse imaginando la activa vida religiosa de los aztecas, que ahora parecen seguir participando en ella gracias a que sus figuras fueron vaciadas cuidadosamente en plomo por Pedro Elías Ruso y Efrén Medina Miranda. El director del proyecto, Ignacio Marquina, complementó su obra con un in­ teresante libro en el que describe el templo, auxiliado por fuentes importantes, y explica los fundamentos de la recons­ trucción. 1 Para reconstruir dinámicamente aquella vida, sería necesa­ rio mucho más que un simple artículo como el presente. Las fuentes son riquísimas, y la descripción de cada una de las ceremonias requeriría páginas enteras.     The Museum of the Templo Mayor The Museum of the Templo Mayor, designed by architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, was created to display more than 7,000 objects found in excavations which took place between 1978 and 1982 at the site of what was once the main temple of the Mexicas. Inaugurated on October 12th, 1987, the museum recreates the duality of life and death, water and war, agriculture and tribute, symbols of Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtli, deities to whom the Main Temple of Tenochtitlan was dedicated. A monolith weighing almost 12 tons that was originally placed at the foot of the Main Temple was discovered in October 2006 on the property of the Nava Chávez estate, on the corner of Guatemala and Argentina Streets. Thanks to 3 years of arduous and detailed restoration work, the visitor can see the impressive representation of this deity in its original polychrome. Historical Background This room presents a panorama of the research developed about the Mexica culture since the first archeological discoveries in 1790 until the present time. A model at the entrance to the room illustrates the places where the most important pre-Hispanic pieces were found in the main square of Mexico City. "MYTHS AND THEIR TRANSFORMATIONS" 2 NARRATIVE The Legend of La Llorona is unique among the literary works in the SAUSD language arts curriculum in that it is the only work set in both the mythological and historical worlds of the Aztecs (Mexico, Nahua) at the time of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. An investigation of its several themes demands an exploration of the mythological context of the novelette, as well as interpretation of the historical and political transformations of the mythological elements. Anyone familiar with Southwest and Mexican folklore will immediately recognize the mythic element of LOL in its very title.

  • The Sanctuary of Night and Wind
    chapter 7 The Sanctuary of Night and Wind At the end of Part 1 (Chapter 4) we concluded that Tomb 7 was a subterraneous sanctuary that belonged to a Postclassic ceremonial centre on Monte Albán and that this centre appears in Codex Tonindeye (Nuttall), p. 19ab, as a Temple of Jewels. Combining the archaeological evidence with the information from the Ñuu Dzaui pictorial manuscripts we understand that the site was of great religious importance for the dynasty of Zaachila, and particularly for Lady 4 Rabbit ‘Quetzal’, the Mixtec queen of that Zapotec kingdom. The depiction in Codex Tonindeye confirms that this sanctuary was a place for worship of sa- cred bundles but it also indicates that here the instruments for making the New Fire were kept. The Temple of Jewels, therefore, combines a religious fo- cus on the ancestors with one on the cyclical renewal of time. Continuing this line of thought, in Part 2 we explore the historical and ide- ological importance of that ritual. This has led us to discuss the meaning of several other ancient Mesoamerican artefacts, codices and monuments, such as the Roll of the New Fire (Chapter 5) and representations of rituals in Aztec art (Chapter 6). With these detailed case studies, we now confront the chal- lenge to try to say something more about the type of rituals that took place in the Temple of Jewels, so we can get an idea of the religious value of Tomb 7 and the religious experiences that ritual practice entailed. Fortunately, the representations of rituals and their associated symbolism in precolonial picto- rial manuscripts, particularly those of the Teoamoxtli Group (Borgia Group), allow us to reconstruct some of the Mesoamerican ideas and visionary experi- ences.

    MAN-LIKE GODS AND DEIFIED MEN IN MEXICAN COSMOLORE Anna-Britta Hellbom INTRODUCTION Ideas and theories This article can be read as an independent study specified in its title. However, put in a wider context it follows up a multi- disciplinary project which was initiated in 1994 at the ICA (Inter- national Congress of Americanists) Symposium Anthropology 7 a on “Amerindian thought” – a topic that attracted researchers from different disciplines, let alone those with an interest for “overlap- ping” fields and with a zeal in initiating new ideas as well as those turning old stones over to view them from a different perspective or angle. 1. In my approach to that much discussed but too exclusively ana- lysed topic I pondered on the necessity of avoiding – wherever pos- sible – such western terms which might influence – even mislead – a free discussion, deriving from traditional conventional categoris- ing and systematising in accordance with monocultural and conse- quently irrelevant norms. E. g. Latin grammar as a model for lin- guistic studies, Greek philosophy formalising intellectual interpre- tations, Christian theological influences on cultural values – all leading to the conclusion that we have “religion” they have “a world view” or at best “mythology”, etc. My own paper focused on Nahuatl (Aztec) thought, using the term tloque nahuaque as a starting point for a discussion on similar con- cepts and comprehensive terms of “cosmic totality”. 2. That “linguistic” angle I stressed on even more in a paper pre- sented at the symposium organized by the Swedish Association of Americanists (SAMS) in September 1996, the topic of the sympo- sium being “The Trickster”.

    GENDER AND ROLES OY LUNAR DEITIES IN POSTCLASSIC CENTRAL MEXICO AND THEJR CORRELATIONS WITH THE MAYA AREA SUSAN MILBRATh Study of colonial period sources, Precolumbian iconography, and ethno­ graphic data provide'l insights about the different roles played by male and female lunar deities. 1 The multiplicity of lunar deities probably re­ flects the many "pcrsonalities" of the moon as it undergoes rapid trans­ formaticn over the course of a month and disappears for a period of up to three days during conjunction with the sun (new moon phase). Ethnographic data and colonial period dictionaries indicate that the moon's monthly transformation is a process of aging, with the penod of the new moon to first crescent representing the newborn moon (Báez­ Jorge 1938: 247; Lamb 1981: 246-47; Neuenswander 1981 ).2 There is also evidence from sorne ethnographic accounts that different phases oI the moon are associated with different sexes (Báez-Jorge 1988: 246; Jiicklein 1974: 285), and in sorne instances the moon may be visualized as changing gender over the course of the month (Tedlock 1985: 296­ 7, 328). Boone Department of Art, Tulane University, New Orleans, LA 70118, USA Abstract The colossal “Coatlicue” sculpture has usually been interpreted as a representation of the female supernatural Coatlicue (Serpents Her Skirt) who gave birth to the Mexica patron deity Huitzilopochtli, or it has been identified as the cult figure of Cihuacoatl (Woman Serpent) or Tlaltecuhtli (Earth Lord). This paper offers an alternative reading of the monumental statue, one that recognizes the existence of at least three nearly identical “Coatlicues” and thus recontextualizes the monument as one of a larger set. The iconography of these great stone females points to their identity as Tzitzimime, celestial demons who were understood to descend to devour humankind if the sun were to fail. According to the Mexican chroniclers, a cadre of these fearsome monoliths dominated the sculpture progam of the Templo Mayor.
