The software (called AttractOrAnalyst) implements a fast algorithm for the visualisation of basins of attraction of iterated function systems, many of which show fractal properties. It also presents an intuitive technique for fractal shape exploration. Interactive visualisation of fractals allows that parameter changes can be applied at run time. This enables real-time fractal animation. Moreover, an extended analysis of the discrete dynamical systems used to generate the fractal is possible. For a fast exploration of different fractal shapes, a procedure for the automatic generation of bifurcation sets, the generalizations of the Mandelbrot set, is implemented. This technique helps greatly in the design of fractal images. A number of application examples proves the usefulness of the approach, and the paper shows that, put into an interactive context, new applications of these fascinating objects become possible. The images presented show that the developed tool can be very useful for artistic work. 1.     Learning Ultra Fractal by Chris Martin (Velvet--Glove) Introduction People frequently ask me about how they can learn to use the Ultra Fractal program or express an interest in learning. I thought I would put together this article to help people get started with this extraordinary and absorbing program. Ultra Fractal is a software program that is used to create fractal images like the ones you can see in my Deviant Art gallery. Now at version 5, UF comes in three flavours – a very basic Express Edition, the Creative Edition (my recommendation if you are not proposing to make animated fractals) and the rather more expensive Extended Edition which allows you to create animations of your fractal creations and use a network of computers for rendering tasks. All editions are now available for both Windows and Mac computers. A trial version of the software can be downloaded for free from the author's website at ultrafractal.com. The trial is fully functional but until you purchase a licence for the program your rendered images will have a watermark added to them. At first glance the program does appear to be rather complex to use and somewhat intimidating, there are so many tabs, functions and confusing concepts to understand. Try not to let this put you off, it takes a little time and study to understand what all the dialogs and controls are for and how to use them properly so you will need to find a few tutorials and other help resources to get you started on making some beautiful images.

    FRACTAL ART(ISTS) Marco Abate and Beatrice Possidente 1 Introduction “Fractals are everywhere.” This has been a sort of advertising line for fractal geometry (and for mathematics in general) since the Eighties, when Benoît Mandelbrot discovered the set now known as Mandelbrot set, and brought fractals to the general attention (see, e.g., [1, 2] for the story of his discovery, and [3] for an introduction to fractal geometry). As most good advertising lines, though not completely true, it is not too far from the truth. Possibly they are not exactly everywhere, but fractals are frequent enough to guarantee you will meet at least one as soon as you leave your full-of-straight-lines man-made-only office space and take a short walk in a natural environment. When you start thinking about it, this is not surprising. Fractals are easy to generate: it suffices to repeat over and over (infinitely many times in the mathematical world, but in the real world ten times is often close enough to infinity) the same simple process to create a complicated object; and tinkering with just a few parameters allows to obtain an amazingly wide range of different shapes, that can be easily adapted to specific requirements. It is quite an efficient scheme, and nature loves efficiency; complex structures can be created starting just from simple (but nonlinear!) tools. Coastlines and mountain lines; leaves arrangements and lightning; fractures and clouds; all examples of fractally generated shapes. And fractals are beautiful, there is no denying that. Something in their intricate shapes, in their repeating of similar forms at different scales, resonates deeply into our (fractal-shaped) brain, evokes our aesthetic senses, let us admire infinity easing our painfully perceived finiteness.

    BRIDGES Mathematical Connections in Art, Music, and Science Layering Fractal Elements to Create Works of Art Janet Parke 1763 Myrna Lane Memphis, TN 38117, USA http://www .parkenet.org/jp email: [email protected] Abstract Recent advances in fractal generation software allow the user to create multiple layers of fractal elements that may then be combined to create a composite work of fractal imagery. As an example of how this technique can be used to create art, this paper describes the process I used in creating "The Moirai," a series ofthree images depicting the three "Fates" from Greek mythology who personify the inescapable destiny of man. 1. Introduction My art is created solely within Ultra Fractal [1], a shareware fractal generator for the Windows platform. This state-of-the-art fractal plotter is a sophisticated graphics program with masking and layering capabilities that give the user unprecedented artistic control over the image. Ultra Fractal also provides a built-in formula editor and compiler with which users can write calculation formulas, coloring algorithms, and geometric transformations. These formula plug-ins are written by users all over the world and shared through an online database [2]. In my discussion of the software and my creative process, I will proceed with the assumption that the reader has some knowledge ofMandelbrot and Julia sets and how they are generated. There are two kinds of coloring algorithms used in the works discussed in this paper. One is Fractional Brownian Motion, a fractal algorithm built on Perlin's noise function [3]. It provides bumpy coloring that can be rendered at high resolution.

Acest material nu își propune o înșiruire de date istorice sau nume ale unor matematicieni aranjate cronologic, ci mai degrabă o călătorie în timp prin universul matematicii, pentru a redescoperi ordinea în care s-au formulat principalele probleme și soluțiile lor. Dintre personalitățile matematicii, atenția se va abate mai mult asupra celor care au avut ceva de socotit, decât asupra acelora care au făcut socotelile. Oricare dintre realizările lor poate fi astăzi un bun exercițiu pentru scrie proiectul cu mijloace moderne, sau pentru calculul necesarului. Cel care poate alcătui proiectul și caietul de sarcini pentru Piramida lui Keops, sau pentru Zidul Chinezesc, va putea proiecta mai ușor o locuință modernă sau o anexă. Poate fi un exercițiu bun și calculația pentru un proiect ce utilizează doar tehnologia și resursele existente la vremea respectivă. Fiecare dintre subiectele propuse poate face subiectul unei disertații, al unui eseu sau al unei ore de curs facultativ. Nedorind a amalgama prea mult noțiunile și așa destul de complexe, șirul povestirii este deșirat în mai multe capitole, structurate pentru diferitele ramuri ale matematicii. Textul nu are caracter didactic dar poate inspira viitorii profesori de matematică. Este bun un pretext pentru o călătorie în timp, un fel de temă de casă a unui elev mai întârziat ca vârstă.
