Participating in this year’s com- petition were more than 120 athletes from 14 Florida counties and one athlete and a delegation from Missouri. Nassau County athletes surfing in this year’s event were Brent Dickerson, Alissa DiDomenico, Anthony Duncan, Katie Freeman, Jake Martin, Ethan “Max” Lucovsky, Diego Martinez-Brown, Luis Martinez-Brown, Kristopher Mitchell, Zachary “Scully” Sculthorpe, Joseph Sheperis, Weston Terry and Stephanie Willaford. Twenty-six final heats were held with three to five athletes in each heat based on their respective division by gender, age and surfer level. There are four surfer levels in Special Olympics surfing. Bringing home gold in their respective divisions were Katie Freeman, Ethan “Max” Lucovsky, Luis Martinez-Brown, Weston Terry and Stephanie Willaford. Anthony Duncan, Diego Martinez-Brown, Kristopher Mitchell and Zachary “Scully” Sculthorpe took silver. Alissa DiDomenico and Jake Martin snagged bronze, and Brent Dickerson and Joseph Sheperis finished fourth in their very competi- tive heats. Accompanying and supporting the athletes were delegation coaches Vernellie “Klippies” Booyens, Emily Flint, Betsy Harris, Curtis Hensyl, Steve Mehas, Kirk Mitchell, David Montgomery and Glenn Sculthope, with Zoe Gilsenan providing beach-front athlete support. Melinda Willaford and Holly Sculthorpe pro- vided female chaperoning support, with lifeguard Nancy Chandler on board to provide beachfront guarding for any pre-competition practice ses- sions. “These athletes have come a long way, progressing from requiring significant coaching assistance catching waves to many athletes able to catch waves on their own,” Kirk Mitchell said. “Many of our surfing athletes will be progress- ing to the next competitive performance level in 2020, and this is a good thing, as our ultimate objective is for these athletes to be in the line-up as independent surfers. “This year’s success is due in large part to the athletes and coaches’ commitment to regular practice session.” Nassau County’s 2019 Special Olympics surf team boasts 17 athletes and 15 coaches. This year, the team logged more than 200 hours of combined practice with athlete and coach atten- dance exceeding 80 percent. The mission of Special Olympics Florida is to provide year-round sports training and com- petition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual disabilities who wish to participate, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate cour- age, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the com- munity.
