Press release 13 November 2017 For immediate release A PORTAL TO LEMMENJOKI’S RAVADAS FALLS AND 99 OTHER MOODS OF FINNISH LANDSCAPE AND EMOTIONS The project 100 Moods From Finland has recorded one hundred moods from Finland during one year. These unique moments are authentic pieces of Finland in different seasons and on a wide scale from roadless wilderness to already familiar places. Five people who for their own part have positively and genuinely contributed to the national image of Finland were invited to join the project. Each of them has chosen their own place from Finland whose mood has been recorded as a 360° video. What place would the vice president of the Sami Parliament, who was raised in the Sami village of Lemmenjoki and roamed the wilderness and fells ever since his childhood, like to show to the Finnish people? “The River Lemmenjoki is my home river and the Ravadas Falls displays the power of nature and is also a source of spiritual strength”, tells Heikki Paltto, an Ambassador of the project 100 Moods From Finland. The Ravadas Falls are impressive and can be experienced digitally through the 360° video of 100 Moods. The viewer may be in for a surprise when rotating the picture in different directions on a smartphone or a computer: the gigantic falls roar in the centre of the landscape and another direction the ambassador himself joiking about his beloved childhood scenery. The ”mood” chosen by Heikki Paltto provides a unique opportunity to experience the ancient and indigenous culture of the North”, says Miikka Niemi, man behind the idea of the project. There were over 100 days of shooting during the project, over 20 000 kilometres in the car’s odometer, and over 1 000 hours of working and refining the material at the headquarters of of Flatlight Creative House that runs the project. 100 Moods From Finland is a project of passion for the Rovaniemi-based company, whose collaborative partners in the project include Finland 100, Nokia, Genelec, Visit Rovaniemi, Ruka- Kuusamo, and Lapland Finland 100. Besides the digital experience, an important part of the project is the dome-shaped exhibition space. It has already delighted the audiences in the midsummer party of Nordic embassies in Berlin and in the SuomiAreena forum in Pori. Treeform was responsible for the design and execution of the exhibition space together with Flatlight Creative House. The project aims to export Finland to the world in a completely new way. The climax of the year is the Ambassador Campaign. A new Ambassador is revealed each week until the campaign culminates in the Finnish Independence Day. Introduction Basic features of Finland’s regional development after the Second World War have been urbanization and regional concentration. Both the production activity and the population have increasingly concentrated to the growing central regions, especially in southern Finland. The change has not happened uniformly but has experienced drastic cycles. Regional mobility was at its peak in Finland in the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. Professional mobility was still relatively brisk during the second half of the 1980s. From there onwards the change was significantly slower until the beginning of the 1990s, but during the second half of the decade concentration accelerated again. After the depression at the beginning of the 1990s the growth of both population and the amount of jobs have concentrated to a few of the largest metropolitan districts, especially the capital district. On the other hand, concentration to the district centres and regional centres has occurred throughout the country. Regional concentration and urbanization are closely connected with economic growth and change of the economical structures. During the periods of rapid economic growth the urban living conditions act as the apex of growth enhancing the concentration of production, jobs and population to the big metropolitan areas. A new characteristic of the last few years in regional population development is that many of the smaller towns have become net migration loss areas.

Two Finnish journals were chosen as the main research material: Arkkitehti, the main national publication for Finnish architects, and Kirjastolehti, the major publication for Finnish librarians. The key historical features of the architectural and librarianship discourses are presented within the wider context. A closer analysis of five representative library build- ings is also presented. The specific architectural discourse on library design is found to have been largely determined by the changes in the Finnish architectural discourse in general; the representational conventions of a genre determined the way the library buildings were presented. The practical demands of library work have largely guided the Finnish librarianship discourse on library planning and design, but in many cases the discussion was also more progressive and future-oriented. Introduction There has been growing interest in library architecture in recent years.1 The study of library buildings and spaces has often been multidisciplinary in nature, covering the aesthetic, social, and cultural aspects of libraries. Nevertheless, the library as a building type remains a somewhat marginal research subject in the history of architecture.
