JR EAST GROUP CSR REPORT 2015 Safety Our measures against earthquakes Damage by the Great East Japan Earthquake (Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake) The magnitude 9.0 Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake occurred on March 11th, 2011, at 14:46, with the epicenter off the Sanriku coast. Zero customer fatalities at stations or on board trains due to the earthquake. Damage and restoration of railway related facilities following the disaster The Great East Japan Earthquake resulted in profound damage to our railway facilities, including the ground facilities for both the Shinkansen and conventional lines.
