The high-flying sport of snocross (‘snowmobile motocross’) is celebrated as one of the state of Minnesota’s biggest motorsports events, and certainly the state’s biggest winter outdoor motorsport event. Some 30,000 fans will converge on the city of Duluth’s iconic ski area – Spirit Mountain – on Thanksgiving Weekend to watch the world’s best snowmobile racers flying their factory-backed sleds – many built by Minnesota-based Arctic Cat (Thief River Falls) and Polaris (Medina) – in the natural and man-made snow high above the Duluth skyline. Created by Visit Duluth in 1992, this long-running event – the longest of its kind in the sport of snocross worldwide – is sanctioned by the International Series of Champions (ISOC) with top pro-am riders competing for the prestigious C.J. Ramstad Memorial Cup. Diehard fans can watch all the action from the outdoor grandstands, evoking a long foregone winter sports vista similar to when the Vikings played outdoors at the old Metropolitan Stadium.     Name: “Monster” Mike Schultz Birthdate: 8/27/1981 Hometown: Pillager, MN Disciplines: Snocross and motocross Sponsored by: FOX Years competing: 18 Mike’s Story: Racing motocross since 1997 and snocross since 1998, Mike was in the midst of a promising professional snocross career when he suffered a devastating accident. While competing in a qualifying race in the Pro Super Stock class of the 2008 AMSOIL Championship Snocross event, Mike’s snowmobile drifted sideways as he jumped over a mogul. When he came out of the jump he landed on his left leg, his knee “virtually exploding.” After undergoing multiple emergency surgeries in the hospital, doctors decided that amputating his left leg above the knee was the only way to save Mike’s life. But Mike was never the kind of guy to sit around feeling sorry for himself. So Mike strapped on his prosthetic leg and started pushing it to its limits. He did what he could to make it work for his favorite activities--snocross, motocross, skiing, etc.-- but was ultimately disappointed with how his "everyday" prosthetic was unable to keep up. At that point, Mike took what was to him the logical next step: he designed and machined his own prosthetic knee/leg. And even though Mike didn't have any formal engineering training, but was more the kind of guy who enjoyed "putzing around in the shop," it worked. Mike's sports leg allowed him to live his life the way he wanted to live it, doing the things he enjoyed. Since his accident in 2008, Mike has made history by being the only person to win Winter and Summer X Game gold medals in two different sports in the same year; he's started a company called Biodapt, Inc.

For more than 30 years, Burleigh County has maintained ownership of the complex which has served the communities of Bismarck-Mandan and the surrounding region. Acquired in 1987, the complex was originally purchased for the intent of serving as the fairgrounds complex for Burleigh County. Shortly after acquiring the complex in 1988, the County completed a master plan to help determine the programmatic uses of the site which would help guide its development. This original master plan focused on supporting fairground-type activities and included elements such as a drag strip, grandstand racing complex, beer garden, carnival fairway, a rodeo complex and livestock facilities. However, due to dwindling county fair attendance during the mid- 1990s, this initial master plan was never fully implemented and Burleigh County successfully petitioned the state legislature to allow the complex to be utilized and developed for uses other than the county fair. During this time, Burleigh County also began leasing out portions of the site to interested parties and community groups such as Buckstop Junction and motocross organizations.

I’ve worked in the powersports industry for over 30 years in every capacity from participant to crew member, graphics guy, sponsor and for the past several years as a media and marketing rep for a number of professional race teams, as well as our own brand. Along the way I’ve been lucky enough to work with the organizers of the original Paris-Dakar Rally on a 10-day, 1,500 mile snowmobile race across Quebec, was part of a team that founded the International Series of Champions, which later became the pro snocross tour and have raced just about everything at every level. These opportunities have allowed me to meet some great racing friends and minds whose experience and input is a key part of what we do with the RideX365 website and magazine and now with the BBXC series. With my racing days winding to an end, it has become my passion to grow this new series as an elevated platform for Midwest racers, of all ages, while putting off-road in front of legitimate numbers of spectators and introducing new riders to the sport.     PRESS RELEASE (Vaughan, ON, October 18, 2011) Meet & Greet at Toronto Snowmobile Show Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing was in full force at the Toronto Snowmobile Show on the weekend of October 14-16 at the International Centre in Toronto. 1 Team owner Andre Laurin made a big splash at the show—not only with Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing’s 2011 Canadian Pro Open Champion, Iain Hayden—but with a full-on display of sponsor banners, the 2012 IQ racing sleds, and the team’s immaculate looking white and black sponsor logos festooned transport rig. Snowmobile enthusiasts and snowcross racing fans flocked to the Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing display booth like snow drifting up against a fence, looking for information and autographed posters. Hayden was kept busy signing autographs and trading racing stories with fans, many of which follow the Canadian snowcross series every winter. Although Hayden’s teammate, Lee Butler, was unable to attend the show due to other commitments, the team took the opportunity to introduce newly signed member, JB Dennis, to the public. Dennis, who garnered a third place ranking in both the Canadian Semi-Pro Stock and Open Championship last season as a privateer Polaris driver, will make his debut in the Pro Lite Class for Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing this season. “We’re very pleased with the turnout at the show. It’s a positive indication that people are interested in the team and what makes it tick. It says a lot when some of the same faces you see at the races show up at the snowmobile show and come by to say hello and offer encouragement for the upcoming season,” Laurin said.

    Articles Extreme Sports and Assumption of Risk: A Blueprint By DAVID HORTON* A GROWING NUMBER of personal injury litigants stand outside the contours of tort law. Plaintiffs who are hurt while engaging in high risk recreational activities do not fit within a doctrine that uses "rea- sonableness" as its central criterion. Reasonableness hinges on whether the cost of an untaken precaution outweighs that of a particu- lar harm.1 In many risky sports, the only way to avoid getting hurt is to forego the activity altogether. For most people, this is not a burden. Even if it is, the lost opportunity value is dwarfed by the omnipresent specter of grave injury. For example, consider the sport of motocross, 2 which involves racing and performing stunts on off-road motorcycles. Motocross is so dangerous that midway through the professional cir- cuit's most recent season, half of its contestants had suffered broken bones or concussions.3 Thus, the reasonably prudent person would probably never try the sport.4 However, if it is unreasonable to take part in motocross, then it must also be unreasonable for a motocross * J.D., UCLA Law School (2004); B.A., Carleton College (1997).
