The Culture …3000 years of History… Villa Tuscolana is located in the heart of the Natural Park of the Colline Romane (Roman Hills District), one the most beautiful green areas nearby Rome: an area that offers a fascinating journey into a landscape characterized by natural environments of great value, with beautiful parks and natural reserves, with lakes set among forests, vineyards and olive groves, in an area of just over 1000 sq. km. An area that preserves and witnesses 3000 years of history, of different cultures, of past civilizations and traditions, a unique concentration of archaeological sites with remains of temples of Roman and pre-Roman necropolis and burial monuments, cyclopean walls, amphitheaters, impressive works of hydraulic engineering and villas of the Imperial and Republican eras. It is possible to find evidence and traces in almost every one of the small towns of Roman Hills District, such as the magnificent Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli, a universal heritage of UNESCO. The more, the District is among the most fascinating cultural areas of Rome for the extraordinary concentration of noble residences (built between the sixteenth and eighteenth century by the great Roman Families): the system “Ville Tuscolane” and baroque palaces, with the works of the greatest architects of the Renaissance and Baroque periods (like Vanvitelli, Bernini, Borromini, Vasari). There are also churches, monasteries and abbeys, rich with frescoes, icons, mosaics and sculptures (such as the beautiful Abbey of San Nilo in Grottaferrata or the Hermitage of Camaldoli in Frascati). Outstanding are the masterpieces of figurative art with the cycles of frescoes of Villa Falconieri in Frascati, Palazzo Doria in Valmontone, Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia and Villa Grazioli in Grottaferrata and many works preserved in churches throughout the area. The area is also plenty of museum sites with valuable works (such as the beautiful mosaic of the Nile kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Palestrina). • THE WORKSHOP in an Earlier Study of the Fish Mosaic of Palestrina and a Series of Fish Mosaics from Pompeii I Concluded on the B
CHAPTER VI THE WORKSHOP In an earlier study of the Fish Mosaic of Palestrina and a series of fish mosaics from Pompeii I concluded on the basis of important similarities in iconography, style and technique, that all were probably made by one workshop. A number of other mosaics could also be ascribed to the same workshop, including the Nile Mosaic of Palestrina, the mosaics from the Casa del Fauno at Pompeii, and several other mosaics from Pompeii and around the Bay of Naples. The workshop has been named the Workshop of the Casa del Fauno because this house possessed the largest collec tion of the workshop's products so far discovered, and because it was these mosaics which allowed a reconstruction of the work shop's activity1• A short review of the workshop's activity may help to shed some light on the background of the Palestrina mosaics. The Casa del Fauno is the best preserved example of a mansion belonging to a provincial aristocrat from the later part of the second century B.C. This was a period of enormous prosperity both in Central Italy and in Pompeii, owing to the development of trade with the Eastern Mediterranean which followed the Roman conquest. The finding of a fragment of a travertine slab with an Oscan inscription mentioning a Satrius, named as an aedile, sug gests that the Casa del Fauno may have belonged to the Satrii, who were a prominent Campanian family. It seems probable that the aedile Satrius was involved in the general architectural embel lishment of Pompeii which took place in the later part of the second century, as well as in the enlargement and embellish ment of the Casa del Fauno.

3D Modelling and Visualisation 1 Thomas van Reimersdahl – Peter Melms – Henner von Hesberg 3D Visualization Limitations of Historical Spaces: Requirements, Practices and Technical Visions Abstract: This paper focuses on the limitations of 3D reconstructions and their visualization with recent software applications. Taking several cultural heritage research projects as examples (the cryptoporticus, the theatre of the Villa Domitian in Castel Gandolfo and the “Musensaal” in the Faustina baths in Milet), we discuss how archaeological requirements and current technical practices affect the limitations of 3D recon- struction and visualization approaches. • Towards Implementing S3.Current Dynamics and Obstacles in the Lazio Region
TOWARDS IMPLEMENTING S3.CURRENT DYNAMICS AND OBSTACLES IN THE LAZIO REGION A. L. Palazzo1 and K. Lelo2 1 Department of Architecture, Roma Tre University of Rome, Via Madonna dei Monti, 40, 00184 Roma, Italy 2 Department of Economics, Roma Tre University of Rome, Via Silvio d’Amico, 77, 00145 Roma, Italy Email: [email protected] Abstract: The Lazio Region is carrying out a re-industrialization policy following the Europe 2020 targets for economic growth, known as Smart Specialization Strategy (S3). This paper frames industrial policy settings dating back to the second half of the 20th Century in the light of current processes and institutional efforts to set a new season for Industry in Lazio Region. Subsequently, relying upon demographic and socio-economic dynamics over the last two decades, new features in settlement patterns and sector-specific obstacles to sustainable development are addressed with a major focus on the Metropolitan area of Rome (the former Province of Rome). In conclusion, some remarks are drawn mindful of the new globalization wave affecting ‘supply chains’ of goods and business services from all over the world, of current trends and innovative approaches liable to envisage ‘territory’ as an opportunity rather than a cost. Difficulties in making different opinions to converge are evident. The proper ground to make it happen should be prepared by a governance able to support place-based inherent ‘entrepreunerial discovery processes’, while providing negotiating practices framed by general and sectoral policies, and communication approaches to ensure transparency and participation of public at large. Keywords: Lazio Region, Metropolitan Area, S3, Settlement Patterns, Sustainability Scenarios, Territorial Innovation 1.

  • Ancient Cities: the Archaeology of Urban Life in the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Greece and Rome, Second Edition
ART 2311: Art and Architecture in Rome Fall 2016 A Days (Mondays and Wednesdays), 11:30am-1:00pm Aula Magna (plus site visits on some Wednesday afternoons) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course gives students the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the development of the city of Rome through a study of its art, architecture and urban transformation. It focuses on the major artistic and architectural movements occurring primarily in Italy (as well as their Greek antecedents) from roughly the 8th century BCE to the 20th century CE. In the study of each period we will strive to understand Rome’s artistic and architectural works within the contexts in which they were created. Our study of art, architecture and urban planning will therefore take into account the historical, political, social, religious and cultural contexts of the patrons, artists and viewers. Particular emphasis will be placed on ancient Greece and Rome, early Christianity, the Renaissance and the Baroque periods. We will also explore the reuse, borrowing and revival of ancient artistic and architectural themes in later periods.
