In this contribution we record the presence of Polyxenus lagurus (Linnaeus, 1758) from Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês and of Lophoproctus cf. pagesi Condé, 1982 from Parque Natural da Arrábida. Key words: Lophoproctidae, Polyxenidae, Iberian Peninsula, cave habitat, leaf litter, pitfall traps, troglobionts. Introduction The order Polyxenida is the only order of the subclass Penicillata. This is a basal group of Diplopoda, sister group of all other diplopods (Enghoff, 1984; Sierwald & Bond, 2007). With about 160 known species (Nguyen Duy- Jacquemin & Geoffroy, 2003) the Polyxenida are divided in four families, three of them being known from Europe (Enghoff & Desmond Kime, 2007): Lophoproctidae, distri- buted in Mediterranean Europe; Polyxenidae, present in all Europe; and Synxenidae, only known from Spain. Despite the wide distribution of some species, polyxenids were never cited from mainland Portugal. They were however referenced for Azores, namely Polyxenus lagurus (Lin- naeus, 1758) at the islands of São Miguel and Pico (Condé & Nguyen Duy-Jacquemin, 1994) and Polyxenus fascicula- tus Say, 1821 in Madeira and Selvagens (Enghoff & Des- mond Kime, 2007; Enghoff, in prep.). -

Here we report the discovery of a second spe- cies of Illacme, a millipede genus notable for possessing the greatest number of legs of any known animal on the planet. -

The identification of 5 species from a recent collection of 23 specimens from two areas in Israel is given. Two new species of Polyxenida are recorded, including the first species in the family Synxenidae (Phryssonotus sp.) and the first species from the family Polyxenidae, subfamily Macroxeninae (Chilexenus sp.), from Israel. These spe- cies are identified only to genus due to the lack of undamaged adult material. Two species in the family Lophoprocti- dae are also identified, one previously recorded but not described, is now described as Lophoproctus israelensis sp. nov., and Lophoproctinus chichinii Condé, 1951is recorded from Israel for the first time. The fifth species is identified as possibly a new species in the genus Polyxenus and likely to be synonymous with the specimens identified as Polyx- enus lagurus Linnaeus, 1758 in a previous study. This is just the second collection from Israel to be identified and brings the total number of Polyxenida species found in Israel to 8. All 3 families of Polyxenida are represented in this list, together with all 3 subfamilies of the most numerous family, Polyxenidae. Keywords. Spring Newsletter 2002 ( Volume 3, Number 2) TBI UARTERLY GreatA Smoky Mountains National Park,Q The Natural History Assoc., Discover Life in America, and Friends of the Smokies Millipede March Tom Rogers Twenty volunteers participated in the first “Millipede March” which was held on the twenty-third of March. We gathered at Twin Creeks in the evening for a barbecue dinner and went into the field just before dusk. One of the best times to collect millipedes is early spring on a warm, drizzly night. We knew it was a bit early in the year for things to be active but decided to use the opportunity for our first attempt. We divided into three teams, one team going to Metcalf Bottoms, one went to Ash Hopper trailhead and one Polyxenus fasciculatus. photo by James Cokendolpher worked across from the nature trail near Sugarlands. We sifted leaf litter and searched the residue for critters. We found ten species of millipedes repre- senting eight families. Dr. Richard Hoffman, an expert on Diplopoda who works with the Vir- ginia Museum of Natural History, is identifying and studying the millipede fauna of the Park for the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI). About 900 species have been described from the U.S. He estimates that about 50 to 60 species of millipedes will be found in the Park. The first is whether millipedes with a fusion ring, including Polydesmida, Spirobolida, Spirostreptida and Julida, form a monophyletic group (the ring-forming group). The second con- cerns the phylogenetic relationship within the three orders of Juliformia, i.e. Julida, Spirostreptida and Spirobolida. To resolve these phylogenetic controversies, we sequenced 18S and 28S rDNA from six millipede orders and retrieved several homologous sequences from GenBank. Our results give robust support to the monophyly of the ring-forming group based on maximum parsimony methods, max- imum likelihood methods and Bayesian inference. The monophyly of the ring-forming group suggests that the fusion of segment sclerites might have occurred only once during millipede evolutionary history. We also established a sister-group relationship between Spirobol- ida and Spirostreptida within Juliformia after eliminating a short-branch attraction phenomenon, which is consistent with that from the mitochondrial genome analysis. -

Arthropods, as the most species-rich and morphologically disparate animal phylum, have received substantial attention, particularly with regard to questions such as the timing of habitat shifts (e.g. terrestrialisation), genome evolution (e.g. gene family duplication and functional evolution), origins of novel characters and behaviours (e.g. wings and flight, venom, silk), biogeography, rate of diversification (e.g. Cambrian explosion, insect coevolution with angiosperms, evolution of crab body plans), and the evolution of arthropod microbiomes. We present herein a series of rigorously vetted calibration fossils for arthropod evolutionary history, taking into account recently published guidelines for best practice in fossil calibration. -

ABSTRACT This paper deals with the conceptions, knowledge and attitudes of the inhabitants of the county of Pedra Branca, Bahia State, on the arthropods of the class Diplopoda. Data were collected from February to June 2005 by means of open-ended interviews carried out with 28 individuals, which ages ranged from 13 to 86 years old. It was recorded some traditional knowledge regarding the following items: taxonomy, biology, habitat, ecology, seasonality, and behavior. Results show that the diplopods are classified as “insects”. The characteristic of coiling the body was the most com- mented, as well as the fact that these animals are considered as “poisonous”. In gen- eral, the traditional zoological knowledge of Pedra Branca’s inhabitants concerning the diplopods is coherent with the academic knowledge.
