Using a modified grounded theory approach, and Borrowing from literature concerning PuBlic deBates and religious rhetoric, a number of rhetorical strategies are identified. -

Michael Parrish, Ph.D. The trouble with “definitions” is they leave no room for evolution. When a word is concretely defined, it is done so in a particular time and place. Contextual interpretations permit a better understanding of certain heavy words; Atheism as a prime example. In the post-modern world Atheism has become more accepted and popular, especially as a reaction to global terrorism. However, the current definition of Atheism is terribly inaccurate. It cannot be stated properly that pagan Atheism is the same as New Atheism. By interpreting the Atheisms from four stages in the term‟s history a clearer picture of its meaning will come out, hopefully alleviating the stereotypical biases weighed upon it. In the interpretation of the Atheisms from Pagan Antiquity, the Enlightenment, the New Atheist Movement, and the American Judicial and Civil Religious system, a defense of the theory of elastic contextual interpretations, rather than concrete definitions, shall be made. Neuroscientists disagree about the implications of their research for mystics’ beliefs about the nature of reality, however. Persinger, Alper, and other scientific materialists believe that their research effectively disproves mystics’ interpretations of their experiences, while Newberg, Hood, and others believe that scientific models of mystical experiences leave room for God or some other transcendent reality. bs_bs_banner MIDWEST STUDIES IN PHILOSOPHY Midwest Studies In Philosophy, XXXVII (2013) New Atheism and the Scientistic Turn in the Atheism Movement MASSIMO PIGLIUCCI I The so-called “New Atheism” is a relatively well-defined, very recent, still unfold- ing cultural phenomenon with import for public understanding of both science and philosophy.Arguably, the opening salvo of the New Atheists was The End of Faith by Sam Harris, published in 2004, followed in rapid succession by a number of other titles penned by Harris himself, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Victor Stenger, and Christopher Hitchens.1 After this initial burst, which was triggered (according to Harris himself) by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, a number of other authors have been associated with the New Atheism, even though their contributions sometimes were in the form of newspapers and magazine articles or blog posts, perhaps most prominent among them evolutionary biologists and bloggers Jerry Coyne and P.Z. Myers. Still others have published and continue to publish books on atheism, some of which have had reasonable success, probably because of the interest generated by the first wave. Philosophy Of Religion / Atheism AO1 Atheism AO1 Handout Part 1 THE IDEA: The difference between atheism and agnosticism: ‘Atheism’ comes from the Greek word meaning “without God” and describes the position of those who reject belief in God or gods. There are various shades of atheism. The term ‘agnostic’ was first used by the English biologist Thomas Huxley. The word is derived from the Greek, meaning ‘without knowledge’. Agnosticism embraces the idea that the existence of God or any other ultimate reality is, in principle, unknowable. Our knowledge is limited and we cannot know ultimate reasons for things. It is not that the evidence is lacking, it is that the evidence is never possible. Some use the word differently. Agnosticism is commonly used to indicate a suspension of the decision to accept or reject belief in God. The suspension lasts until we have more data. ROBUST NONREDUCTIVE MATERIALISM Derk Pereboom, University of Vermont Journal of Philosophy XCIX, October 2002, pp. 499-531. Nonreductive materialism about the mental has been put on the defensive by a series of well-developed arguments against its central claims. Four of these challenges, each of which has been advanced by Jaegwon Kim, are especially prominent: the argument from explanatory exclusion against irreducibly mental causal powers; the contention that the nonreductive view is indistinguishable from the emergentism of Samuel Alexander and C. Lloyd Morgan, a position widely held to be metaphysically extravagant; the claim that the functionalism typically endorsed by nonreductive materialists is incompatible with irreducibly mental causal powers; and the argument that if mental state types are multiply realizable, they cannot be genuinely scientific kinds, for then they will be only as weakly projectible as the wild disjunction of their possible realizations. This last challenge is representative of a growing skepticism about arguments against reductionism from multiple realizability. I will first examine whether nonreductive materialism can finesse the explanatory exclusion problem. Subsequently I will argue that there are significant differences between the controversial sort of emergentism and nonreductive materialism, and that a nonreductive materialist need not be emergentist in this sense. I will then contend that a position according to which mental states instantiate irreducibly mental causal powers – the key feature of what I will call robust nonreductive materialism – indeed cannot be functionalist, but that there is a non- functionalist account of mental states to which the nonreductivist can turn. I will close by examining doubts that have been raised about arguments from multiple realizability against reductionism, concluding that the nonreductive view can withstand these doubts.
