Ode (World Premiere – 2019) Choreography: Jamar Roberts Rehearsal Associate: Marion-Skye Brooke Logan Music: Don Pullen Costume design: Jamar Roberts Lighting design: Brandon Stirling Baker Set design: Libby Stadstad A meditation on the beauty and fragility of life in a time of growing gun violence, Ode is the first in a series of three new dance works that company member Jamar Roberts is creating in his role as Ailey’s first-ever Resident Choreographer. Like his critically-acclaimed Members Don’t Get Weary (2017), this work for six dancers will feature a jazz score – Don Pullen’s “Suite (Sweet) Malcolm (Part 1 Memories and Gunshots)” – and Roberts’ own costume designs. “… a powerful and poetic exploration of the effects of gun violence…” Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in The New York Times Jamar Roberts’ Ode. Photo by Paul Kolnik. “’Ode’ feels like another revelation for Ailey. [Robert] Battle is smart to give Roberts a platform to develop… Works such as “Ode” constitute a powerful new direction for the company.” The Washington Post “It’s delicate, daring, and heartbreaking… says something hopeful about the present and future of this company. It now has a resident choreographer with talent and guts.” The New York Times Jamar Roberts Miami native Jamar Roberts graduated from the New World School of the Arts after beginning his studies at the Dance Empire of Miami, where he continues to teach and mentor students each year. He received a fellowship to The Ailey School before becoming a member of Ailey II, Complexions Contemporary Ballet and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 2002.

Jazz Collection: George Adams Dienstag, 29. April 2014, 21.00 - 22.00 Uhr Samstag, 03. • Art at Vassar, Spring 2012
A publication for the members of The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center Spring 2 012 FROM THE DIRECTOR Research and the Health of the Art Museum Collection In my remarks in the last issue of Art at Vassar, I focused on collection deaccession- ing and referred to the fact that we trimmed our list of deaccessioning candidates by roughly twenty percent by virtue of engaging more parties in the conversation. The enhanced focus on these works also resulted in deeper curatorial research that led to other excisions from the list. One case in point was a small painting by the Italian art- ist Massimo Campigli (1895–1971). This painting was one of a small group of Italian twentieth-century paintings in the collection that never seemed to warrant exhibition or to elicit much curricular interest. We knew that his work had a substantial commercial value in Italy so why not take ad- vantage of this market anomaly, deaccession and sell the paint- ing and buy a work more in tune with our needs? A timely visit to the fascinating 2011 exhibition at the Guggenheim Mu- seum, Chaos and Classicism, Art in France, Italy, and Germany 1918–1936, revised our thinking about this artist. Campigli was a founding member of a group of Italian artists known as the Massimo Campigli (Italian, 1895–1971) Novocento Italiano, who were distinguished by their renewed Two Women on a Balcony, 1931 interest in various forms of classicism, for example the work of Oil on canvas Gift of Mrs. R. Kirk Askew, Jr. ancient Etruscan and Egyptian artist as well as the pure forms 1974.36 and painting techniques of fifteenth-century early Renaissance artists such as Piero della Francesca and Paolo Uccello.

  • The Blues Scale and Its Use
THE BLUES SCALE AND ITS USE The blues scale consists of the following: Root, b3rd, 4th, #4th, 5th and b7th. EXAMPLE: F blues Scale = F, Ab, Bb, B, C, Eb, F When playing a twelve bar blues in the key of Bb, use the Bb blues scale: Bb, Db, Eb, E, F, Ab, Bb The blues scale can also be used over minor chords when the minor chord is sounded for 2, 4, 8, or 16 measures or longer. EXAMPLE: If D minor is sounded for eight measures, you may use the D blues scale: D, F, G, Ab, A, C, D When playing in minor tonalities you may choose to alternate between the dorian minor and the blues scale, both having the same root tone. EXAMPLE: If D minor is sounded for eight measures, play D minor (dorian) or play D blues scale or alternate between the two scale sounds. The blues scale is used to convey a "Funky," "Down-Home," "Earthy" or "Bluesy" sound/feel. Rhythm and blues players use this scale extensively. Don't run it into the ground by overuse! Experiment with the blues scales listed below and apply them to recorded tracks on your play-a-long recordings. After you become familiar with the blues scale as I have it listed, you may want to add tones to the scale which give the scale sound more variety. Added tones are underlined. EXAMPLE: F blues scale = F, G, Ab, A, Bb, B, C, D, Eb, F This scale sounds strange when played straight up or down.
