The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. A WILLA CATHER COLLECTION By RICHARD CARY s the end of the past decade approached, the Division of A Rare Books and Manuscripts in the Colby College Library did not harbor any appreciable amount of Willa Cather memo rabilia among its more than fifty special author collections. Apart from her basal value as possibly the best of America's female novelists, there were at least two reasons why her works might have been included: 1) she is buried in nearby Jaffrey, New Hampshire, thus providing us a regional claim; 2) she was a protegee and avowed disciple of Sarah Orne Jewett, without peer Maine's most perceptive delineatrist. This consociation in spired Miss Cather to dedicate 0 Pioneers! "To the memory of Sarah Orne Jewett, in whose beautiful and delicate work there is the perfection that endures"; and to compile The Best Stories of Sarah Orne Jewett (Boston, 1925), in the preface of which she declared: "If I were asked to name three American books which have the possibility of a long, long life, I would say at once, The Scarlet Letter, Huckleberry Finn, and The Country of the Pointed Firs." Despite these compelling motivations, only a few fugitive items of secondary bearing and several letters, de sultorily donated, marked the extent of our Cather holdings until 1959. -

LOCATION; Suuth e.» h6i Seward street at the northwest corner of the intersection of Railway. 4. OWNER: State of Nebraska Historical Society ADDRESS: 1500 R Street, Lincoln, Nebraska 68508 7. DESCRIPTION: Red Cloud's Burlington Depot measures about 25 x 100 feet in plan and is a fairly standard combination station of wood frame construction. The two story section was built in 1897 and represents the essential combination station with agents living quarters above. The freight room, agents office and waiting room originally occupied the ground floor of this section. In 1913 the one story wing to the east was added, providing additional waiting room space and a covered platform-loading area. An 80 foot long wing to the west was constructed in 1916 which provided an enlarged freight room as well as lunch room. The majority of this wing was later removed, leaving only the coal storage room west of the main building and thus leaving the truncated appearance of the gabled west wing (photo #18). The entire building except the truncated western wing is roofed with a hip roof, supported by brackets, and covered with metal shingles. A squared bay window on the south (track) side is original. Interior finishing of the entire ground floor is original while the second floor living quarters, once remodeled into enginemen's bunk rooms, was recently remodeled into comfortable living quarters for the Curator of the Willa Gather Pioneer Memorial. -

THE WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA HISTORICAL MAGAZINE Volume 51 January 1968 Number 1 WILLA CATHER'S PITTSBURGH YEARS 1896-1906 Kathleen Derrigan Byrne is a pleasure to be with you this evening and to have this oppor- tunity of talking with you about the Pittsburgh years of Willa ItCather. She was in Pittsburgh from 1896-1906 and called Pittsburgh the birthplace of her writing.— At times Imay seem to give you more Pittsburgh than Cather a fault acceptable perhaps to Historical Society listeners. In the preface to The Song of the Lark Cather said, "The life of a successful artist in the full tide of achievement is not so interesting as the life of a talented young girl 'fighting— her way/ as we say. Success is never so interesting as struggle not even to the successful, not even to the most mercenary forms of ambition." The Pittsburgh years were years of struggle and were vitally interesting and important. Too often these Pittsburgh years are passed over with a mere mention. In 1955 Dorothy Canfield Fisher told Mildred Bennett, President— of the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial —in Red Cloud, Nebraska who was then writing a Cather biography that she should "emphasize the importance of the Cityof Pittsburgh in those years for Pittsburgh was more vital, more creative, more hungry for culture even than New York .. ." Steel, oiland coal fortunes were endowing Carnegie Institute with An address delivered before the Society on October 17, 1967, by Mrs. Byrne, who is a leading authority on the life and works of Willa Cather. Mrs. Byrne belongs to numerous educational, learned and professional societies. -
