Hinckley na: “Inaasahan ko na para sa inyo [ang pag-aaral ng mga banal na kasulatan] ay magiging isang bagay na higit na kawili-wili at hindi isang tungkulin lamang; na, sa halip, ito ay magiging isang pakikipagsuyuan sa salita ng Diyos. Ipinapangako ko sa inyo na habang nagbabasa kayo, ang inyong mga kaisipan ay magkakaroon ng kaliwanagan at ang inyong espiritu ay mabibigyang inspirasyon” (“The Light Within You,” Ensign, Mayo 1995, 99). Bilang guro sa Doktrina ng Ebanghelyo ay may pagkakataon kayong tulungan ang mga miyembro ng inyong klase na matutuhang mahalin ang Lumang Tipan at hanapin ang kaliwanagan ng kaisipan na ipinangako ni Pangulong Hinckley. Habang nagtuturo kayo ay masusundan ninyo ang halimbawa ng Tagapagligtas, na nagmahal sa mga banal na kasulatan at ginamit ang mga ito upang turuan ang kanyang mga disipulo. Pagkatapos na mabuhay na mag-uli si Jesus, ginamit niya ang mga banal na kasulatan upang ituro sa dalawang disipulo ang makapangyarihang katotohanan. Hiniling ni Cleopas at ng kanyang kasama na lumagi sa piling nila ang Tagapagligtas, at sa pag-upo nila upang kumain siya ay nakilala nila bilang ang nabuhay na mag-uling Panginoon. Sa gayon ay naglaho siya sa kanilang paningin, at sinabi nila sa isa’t isa, “Hindi baga nag-aalab ang ating puso sa loob natin, habang tayo’y kinakausap niya sa daan, samantalang binubuksan niya sa atin ang mga kasulatan?” (Lucas 24:32). Ang mga banal na kasulatan na nagdulot ng nag-aalab na damdamin sa puso ng mga disipulo ay mula sa mga aklat ni Moises at ng mga propeta—ang mga banal na kasulatan na kilala natin bilang ang Lumang Tipan. Habang itinuturo ninyo ang mga sagradong katotohanang ito ay magpapatotoo ang Espiritu Santo tungkol sa katotohanan ng mga bagay na ito sa inyong klase na tulad ng ginawa niya kay Cleopas at sa kanyang kasama. Sa pamamagitan ng paggabay ng Espiritu sa kanilang pag-aaral, ang mga miyembro ng klase ay dapat na makapagpatotoo na tulad ni Job na, “Talastas ko na manunubos sa akin ay buhay, at siya’y tatayo sa lupa sa kahuli-hulihan” (Job 19:25). vii Pagtuturo sa Pamamagitan ng Espiritu Kapag naghahanda para sa klase sa Doktrina ng Ebanghelyo, mahalaga na hangarin ninyo ang inspirasyon at gabay mula sa Espiritu ng Panginoon. “At ang Espiritu ay ibibigay sa inyo sa pamamagitan ng panalangin nang may pananampalataya;” ang sabi ng Panginoon, “at kung hindi ninyo natanggap ang Espiritu kayo ay hindi magtuturo” (Doktrina at mga Tipan 42:14). Alalahanin na ang Espiritu Santo ang guro sa inyong klase. Ang paraan ng inyong pagsasaliksik sa Espiritu ay sa pamamagitan ng panalangin, pag-aayuno, araw-araw na pag-aaral ng mga banal na kasulatan, at pagsunod sa mga kautusan. Samantalang naghahanda para sa klase, manalangin na tulungan kayo ng Espiritu na maunawaan ang mga banal na kasulatan at ang mga pangangailangan ng mga miyembro ng klase. Matutulungan din kayo ng Espiritu upang makapagplano ng mga makabuluhang paraan upang matalakay ang mga banal na kasulatan at itugma ang mga ito sa kasalukuyan (1 Nephi 19:23). Sa tulong ng Espiritu, kayo ay magiging mabisang kasangkapan sa mga kamay ng Panginoon upang maituro ang kanyang salita sa kanyang mga anak. My informants have chiefly been school-boys, who spoke a little English ; they wrote the text of riddle and answer in their native tongue and then we went over them carefully together to make an English translation and to get at the meaning. ]\Iany Fil- ipinos IvQow how to read and write their native language, although few have had actual instruction in doing so. There is no question that errors and incon- sisteneies exist in the spelling of these riddles, due to this lack of instruction and to the fact that the texts have been written by many different persons.

    About Pinili Early on, Lamiraw Creative Writing Workshop (LCWW) accepted fellows from all over the country into its workshops. Thus there are works in Ilocano, Tagalog/Filipino, Abaknon, Cebuano, English, Hiligaynon and Kinaray-a in this collection. We provided translations only for Abaknon and Ilocano which the writers themselves made along with their entries. We did not attempt to translate all the works since that would mean a huge and more expensive book. The collection is dominantly Bisaya—Waray, Cebuano, Hiligaynon and Kinaray-a. Abaknon is spoken only in Capul Island, an hour’s travel by pumpboat from the mainland in the northwestern coast of Samar. Abaknon or Inabaknon has not quite entered the world of print, and the 12,679 Capuleños are engaged in a huge struggle to keep their language alive in a vastly mediated world. Orthography for the Visayan languages has not quite stabilized. We have adapted the most popular conventions in the dominant languages with modifications that, we believe, contributes to readability. We have en- deavored, as far as we are able, to be consistent in our use of these conven- tions. The figures after the author’s name in each title refers to the specific workshop attended and the year of the workshop. Thus 5-2008 after Efmer Agustin’s name means he attended the Fifth Lamiraw held in 2008. Pinili is a Visayan term which means “chosen,” root, pili, “to choose.” Pili or Pinili is used across the Visayan family of languages, hence its aptness as the title for this book. The works were chosen by a Committee from submis- sions to the LCWW over the fifteen years of its existence.
