Eric is a husband, a father of two young toddlers, and enjoys the outdoors, coffee on patios, and restoring vintage mountain bikes. He holds dual Canadian and British citizenships. During his high school days, Disney filmed The Boy Who Could Fly just down the road and Eric spotted the unit still photographer. It’s all he’s ever wanted to do since. Eric has been shooting film since the age of eight and has been a digital photographer since 1996 with the introduction of film scanners and Photoshop version 3. Eric has been a member of IATSE 891 for nineteen years and a member of IATSE 669 for thirteen years and knows our business down to the pixel. .

    _____________________________________________________________________________ ______ The Still Photographer (Stills/Portrait Photographer) by Kim Gottlieb-Walker, Doug Hyun, Ralph Nelson, David James, Melinda Sue Gordon and Byron Cohen Duties The Still/Portrait Photographer's primary job is to interpret the project in single frames which accurately represent the story, production value, stars, and feeling of the show. These images are used to publicize, entice, and seduce the potential audience into watching the show. Whenever the public is exposed to images other than video or film regarding a show, they must be shot by the unit still photographer. The still person will work both during actual filming/taping, during rehearsals, on or off the set. He or she will shoot available light but is also capable of doing fully lit shoots with either his own lighting or in conjunction with production. More specifically, the still photographer takes production stills that the publicity department can use to promote the film or television show in press kits and various print media and the increasingly important DVD stills galleries. This includes characteristic shots of each scene, shots which show the actors acting together, shots which give a feeling of the look and atmosphere of the show, good character shots of the actors, shots of the director directing, special effects being rigged, special make-up being created, anything which could be supplied to the regular or genre press or used later on the DVD to promote interest in and expand knowledge about a production. But beyond that, because the Still Photographer is the only person on the set authorized to take photographs, he or she may, if time allows, serve some of the photographic needs of the crew.

Rivera Abreu and his family were the lucky ones, after Hurricane Maria ripped through Puerto Rico, sparing them serious harm or distress. “A lot of friends and co- workers lost homes and possessions; some lost family members,” he shares. “It’s really hard to talk about.” Yet filmmaking post-Maria returned soon after the storm. “I was working on The Oath Season One and we were right back to work almost a month after,” Rivera Abreu remembers. “2018 was of one of our busiest years.” Keeping the island’s film business healthy requires trust in its government and local crews’ tenacity. “We are prepared to shoot in anything,” he adds. “If we could make it work post Maria, we can sure make it happen anytime. All who have shot here know this: we are warm-hearted, super hardworking and giving people. You come for the tax incentive, but you stay for the crew.” Rivera Abreu started in sound, earning an AS degree in Recording Arts from Full Sail University in Orlando and a BA degree in Radio Production and Marketing from the University of the Sacred Heart in Santurce, PR, in 2013. He quickly migrated to images, though, initially working as a digital loader. When DIT Su-Jeng Sang recommended him for The Vessel, in 2013, director Julio Quintano and Director of Photography Santiago Benet, SPC, took him on.

    » Silent Runners 5/5/17, 10(50 PM SILENT RUNNERS Jess Hall, BSC, helps to create a live-action alternate future with the anime-inspired thriller Ghost in the Shell. The 1995 animated film Ghost in the Shell is among the most acclaimed entries in the anime genre. Derived from a manga (Japanese comic book) series, it depicts the adventures of Major Motoko Kusanagi, a human-cyborg hybrid who leads an elite law- enforcement task force devoted to stopping cyber (and real) terrorism in 21st century Japan. Ghost in the Shell inspired interest in the U.S.A. as a live-action remake. (It’s often cited as one of the principal influences on The Matrix.) But the project remained unrealized for years until Steven Spielberg brought Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders onboard. The British filmmaker recruited Scarlett Johansson to star as the Major and Jess Hall, BSC, as director of photography.
