" # $ Despite country music's colloquial categorization as a white genre, its music is rooted in traditions from enslaved Africans (https://news.vanderbilt.edu/2015/12/31/class-uses- mapping-technology-to-trace-african-american-presence-in-country-music/) who established its foundation through the introduction of musical instruments, such as the banjo, to the Americas. African descendants (https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct- xpm-1998-09-16-9809190003-story.html) infused their musical traditions with elements of the European songs brought by settlers of the Southern United States — fiddles and harmonicas, foundations of antebellum culture — to create hillbilly music, modern country music's predecessor. For generations, Black musicians participated in recording sessions with white country musicians because of their shared musical heritage in the rural South, yet their contributions were whitewashed (https://www.npr.org/sections/therecord/2013/08/23/213852227/race-and-country-music- then-and-now) in the 1980s and '90s as country music aligned itself with white-centered politics. Evidenced by the outrage surrounding the Country Music Awards' decision to have Beyonce perform her twangy, Texas-tribute Daddy Lessons (https://www.vox.com/2016/4/28/11526188/beyonce-country-music-black-roots) off Lemonade, country music as an institution has clearly refused to acknowledge the genre's Black Southern roots and is a modern day example of country's music "white myth (https://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/noah-berlatsky-on-hidden-in-the-mix-country- music/Content?oid=9990104)" in praxis. Deford Bailey (https://www.wideopencountry.com/the-incredible-rise-and-sudden-decline- of-deford-bailey/), one of country's Black pioneers and the grandson of slaves himself, brought the genre into mainstream popularity through a series of performances on Nashville based radio shows from 1926-1941. Ray Charles (https://www.opry.com/articles/how-ray- charles-shaped-country-music)' Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music ascended to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 charts in 1962, and ushered in a new era for the genre to be heard by millions of listeners across the United States outside of its regional fanbase in the South. But as the genre attracted acclaim and solidified Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry as its epicenter, Black country veterans were dismissed (https://www.dallasobserver.com/music/will-darius-rucker-break-country-music-s-color- barrier-once-and-for-all-8445362) from genre's spaces and history. Southern Black musicians like Clarence Carter and Otis Redding embedded their rural (https://psmag.com/social-justice/justin-timberlake-and-the-white-open-spaces) musical roots into their soulful artistry, due to the segregational practices of the time period which strengthened the genre's refusal to recognize its Black heritage, a privilege solely afforded to white musicians. Country's gatekeepers (https://www.npr.org/2019/04/05/710262673/country-music-excludes-women-especially- over-age-40-study-finds? utm_campaign=storyshare&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social), such as artist development experts, label heads, managers, and those in powerful positions, shifted the genre toward whiteness to produce a revisionist history aligned with Old Southern values, which inherently refer to the region's period of overtly white supremacist policies, like Jim Crow. Lil Nas X - Old Town Road (feat. Billy Ray Cyrus) [Music Video] Decades later in 2008, Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish ascended (https://www.dallasobserver.com/music/will-darius-rucker-break-country-music-s-color- barrier-once-and-for-all-8445362) on the country charts as the first Black man to achieve commercial success in the genre since its historical erasure of Black pioneers. As Hootie's frontman, Rucker's soulful sound infiltrated (https://www.vulture.com/2017/10/exploring- darius-ruckers-impact-on-modern-country-music.html) the predominantly white space of alternative rock in the 1990s, which positively assisted his transition into country music due to the audience's familiarity with his artistry. His legacy (https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/darius-rucker-and-the-perplexing- whiteness-of-country-music)in the genre, a Grammy awarded musician with an invitation to the Grand Ole Opry, has opened doors for the next generation of Black musicians eager to reconnect the genre to its Black roots. More recently, Jimmie Allen and Kane Brown's (https://www.okayplayer.com/music/jimmie-allen-kane-brown-black-country-billboard.html) respective musical projects charted on Billboard, becoming the first Black artists (https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2018/11/21/jimmie-allen-and-kane-brown- have-historic-week-country-music-charts/2080533002/) to claim the top spot on country radio. Despite their success, however, the Country Music Awards snubbed (https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/country/8482427/kane-brown-billboard-cover- story) Brown of a nomination in 2018, and Allen experienced a feeling of sadness (https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2019/02/21/why-jimmie-allen-is- excited-sad-be-first-black-country-singer-launch-career-with-no-hit/? utm_term=.dc0ba81f2d59) as his tokenization was applauded as a sign of progress for the genre. "It was cool. But at the same time, I was sad about it," Allen told the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2019/02/21/why-jimmie-allen-is- excited-sad-be-first-black-country-singer-launch-career-with-no-hit/? utm_term=.6f90124d0909) after his song topped the country charts. "Because it sucks that I'm the first. You know what I mean? I was excited and sad at the same time. I was glad I did it and got it done. But I want it to be where it's not a thing anymore." The genres' interwoven Black traditions ushered in a generation of rappers from the Southern United States, such as Pimp C from Underground Kings, a Texas based rap collective that spoke "country rap tunes (https://www.complex.com/music/2019/04/evolution-of-country-rap-songs/)" into existence in 1999. The 'Yeehaw Agenda (https://jezebel.com/what-everyone-is-getting-wrong-about- the-yee-haw-agenda-1833558033),' a term created by Bri Malandro, displayed the ascension of country's influence on the genre, such as Will Smith's Wild Wild West and Mo Thugs Family feature with Bone Thugs N Harmony's Ghetto Cowboy. Artists (https://tasteofcountry.com/best-and-worst-country-pop-collaborations/) from respective genres, such as Florida Georgia Line and Nelly, Jason Aldean and Ludacris, and Brad Paisley and LL Cool J, have collaborated on inauthentic musical projects in an integrated attempt to fuse two of America's Black genres. As hip-hop continues its rapid trajectory to become the most popular genre (https://www.businessinsider.com/hip-hop-passes-rock-most-popular-music-genre-nielsen- 2018-1) in the United States, new rappers are seeking to build upon the genre's musical foundations and develop a unique sound that appeals to complexities of the Black experience. Southern based rappers like UGK and Big K.R.I.T incorporated country musical traditions into what's become country rap (https://www.theringer.com/music/2019/4/10/18302094/lil-nas-x-old-town-road-billy-ray- cyrus-southern-rap-country-trap-hick-hop), a sub-genre that fuses elements of both country and rap, as its name suggests, creating a cultural production that highlights the intersection of Southern Blackness. "Old Town Road," the latest iteration of this historical fusion by 20- year-old newcomer Lil Nas X, reached music industry success after its debut on Billboard's Hot 100, Hot Country, and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop at the same time, yet became subject to controversy after its' erasure from the country chart, due to the single's supposed lack (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/lil-nas-x-old-town-road-810844/) of modern country elements. Popular Music (2014) Volume 33/2. © Cambridge University Press 2014, pp. 185–207 doi:10.1017/S0261143014000270 ‘Find out what it means to me’: Aretha Franklin’s gendered re-authoring of Otis Redding’s ‘Respect’ VICTORIA MALAWEY Music Department, Macalester College, 1600 Grand Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55105, USA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In her re-authoring of Otis Redding’s ‘Respect’, Aretha Franklin’s seminal 1967 recording features striking changes to melodic content, vocal delivery, lyrics and form. Musical analysis and transcription reveal Franklin’s re-authoring techniques, which relate to rhetorical strategies of motivated rewriting, talking texts and call-and-response introduced by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The extent of her re-authoring grants her status as owner of the song and results in a new sonic experience that can be clearly related to the cultural work the song has performed over the past 45 years. Multiple social movements claimed Franklin’s ‘Respect’ as their anthem, and her version more generally functioned as a song of empower- ment for those who have been marginalised, resulting in the song’s complex relationship with feminism. Franklin’s ‘Respect’ speaks dialogically with Redding’s version as an answer song that gives agency to a female perspective speaking within the language of soul music, which appealed to many audiences. Introduction Although Otis Redding wrote and recorded ‘Respect’ in 1965, Aretha Franklin stakes a claim of ownership by re-authoring the song in her famous 1967 recording. Her version features striking changes to the melodic content, vocal delivery, lyrics and form.

  • The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 An historical biography: 1969-2004 by Omékongo Dibinga Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2015 Advisory Committee: Professor Barbara Finkelstein, Chair Professor Steve Klees Professor Robert Croninger Professor Derrick Alridge Professor Hoda Mahmoudi © Copyright by Omékongo Dibinga 2015 Acknowledgments I would first like to thank God for making life possible and bringing me to this point in my life.

Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio Honors Thesis Caleb G. Vanden Eynden Department: Music Advisor: Samuel N. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.
