  • THE MUSICAL FEATURES of 2015'S TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS
THE MUSICAL FEATURES OF 2015’s TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS By Mason Taylor Allen Senior Honors Thesis Department of Music University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 22, 2016 Approved: Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

  • Issue 469 Motor Mouths: Country in Detroit “Detroit: Cars and Rock ‘N’ Roll
October 12, 2015, Issue 469 Motor Mouths: Country In Detroit “Detroit: Cars and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Not a bad combo.” Nice, Kid Rock. But what are either without radio? Motor City call letters including WCSX, WRIF, WOMC, WKQI, WJR, WWWW and WYCD have become famous over the years with help from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Steve Kostan and Arthur Penhallow, National Radio Hall of Famers Dick Purtan, J.P. McCarthy, Steve Dahl and Howard Stern, and Country Radio Hall of Famer Dr. Don Carpenter, to name a few. Not a bad pedigree. PPM market No. 12 is changing, though, especially with respect to Country. For starters, CBS Radio’s WYCD got its first direct challenger in four years when Cumulus Adult Hits WDRQ adopted the company’s Nash brand in late 2013 (Breaking News 12/13/13). And just a few weeks ago Carpenter ended his 10- year WYCD morning run, which led to other on-air changes at the station (CAT 8/5). Country Aircheck details some of those and checks WDRQ’s progress here. Write On: Rosanne Cash, Mark James, Even Stevens On The Market: Detroit – Rust Belt city or city on a and Craig Wiseman were inducted into the Nashville comeback? “Detroit is on a great comeback, but there was a time Songwriters Hall Fame last night (10/11) at the 45th Anniversary Hall of Fame Gala held at the Music City where people moved out of the market,” says Center. BLAKE, MAREN, FGL, LUKE COMBS LEAD 2017 AIRPLAY an life get much better for Blake Shelton? He anchors one of TV’s top shows, headlines concert dates, has a No. 1 album, and is now the 2017 Country radio airplay leader. CShelton’s 2017 airplay totals propel him to both the top Overall Performer and Top Male spots, driven by a pair of songs – “A Guy With A Girl” and “Every Time I Hear That Song” – that spent three weeks at No. 1. A third single – “I’ll Name The Dogs” – was in the Top 5 as 2017 came to a close. Adding to Shelton’s totals were four cuts from his new album Texoma Shore that charted the week of its release, though he would have topped airplay even without the points generated by those cuts. THEYEAR Florida Georgia Line’s trio of 2017 hits extend Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley’s dominance in INMUSIC the Duo/Group Performer category to fi ve years. They’re also the only non-solo male artist to make this year’s Top 10 Overall airplay performers. The Blake Shelton meteoric rise of Maren Morris continued in 2017. Airplay from “80s Mercedes” and “I Could Use A Love Song” vaulted her to the most-heard female artist of the year. Adding to her Country radio presence this year was a featured performance on the No. 1 single “Craving You” with Thomas Rhett. (Airplay points for that song are not included in Morris’ totals.) This year’s Top New Artist title goes to Luke Combs.

February 10, 2020, Issue 691 Power Gold: Concentration Game This edition of Country Aircheck’s Power Gold is led by eight artists who combine for 46 of the Top 100 most-heard Gold hits. Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line lead the parade with seven songs apiece, followed by Jason Aldean and Zac Brown Band with six each. Rounding out the top PG hit-makers are Kenny Chesney, Thomas Rhett, Blake Shelton and Carrie Underwood, all with five hits in the Top 100. One artist – Dierks Bentley – places four songs in this elite group, meaning that nine acts are responsible for 50% of the current Power Gold. More thoughts on that later. Twenty-three songs from 20 artists are new Luke Bryan to the Top 100 since we ran the list last year (CAW 1/14/19). Interestingly, four songs in that group are more than five years old and are actually making a return appearance to the PG 100. They are Tim McGraw’s “Live Like You Were Dying” (2004), Bentley’s “Free And Easy (Down The Staff Hearted: WNCY/Appleton, WI’s Shotgun Shannon, Luke Road I Go)” (2007), Bryan’s “I See You” (2015) and FGL’s “Sippin’ Reid, Charli McKenzie, Hannah, Dan Stone and PJ (l-r) show On Fire” (2015). off the station’s 23rd annual Y100 Country Cares for St. Jude This Top 100 Power Gold – along with the airplay information in Kids Radiothon total. the previous paragraph – is culled from Mediabase 24/7 and music airplay information from the Country Aircheck/Mediabase reporting panel for the week of January 26-Feb.
