That meeting will be held at Ridge Course Golf Club in Auburn. Time is 6:30 p.m. This is in Placer County. The Butte County Declaration Committee has asked for an agenda item to discuss the “Declaration to withdraw” at the April 22 Butte Co. Board of Supervisors meeting. That committee has held several Town Hall meetings beginning back in September of 2013 and has met with some resistance from several supervisors. So the commit- tee decided it was time to ask Baird to speak directly to the supervisors. Back in March, Truman Bernal asked the Lake Co. Board of Supervisors to also discuss the idea of the Declara- tion. Baird was not able to make that meeting, but staunch Lake Co. supporters for the State of Jefferson spoke their mind to the supervisors, who said they are open to more discussion. As a result, a Town Hall in Lake County is being planned. We are not the only county in disarray but we had better stop digging the hole deeper. As of July 1, 2011 Trinity County had a Retiree Health Program with unfunded liabilities of $59.9+ Million. This does not in- clude Trinity County’s unfunded retirement liability. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (March 12, 2014) the total cost of employing a state or local government worker is 45% more than an equiva- lent worker in the private sector. Not only do government employees average 33% higher pay than those in the private sector, their pension and retirement benefit costs are now 254% higher also. We need to find ways to deal with these problems. One option is to find jobs that can be contracted out to local people and business- es; such as janitorial services and cooks.

We are using our Court House and Juvenile Facility as collateral for a 4.5 million bond and paying 8.5% interest when Trinity County has $35 million invested at 1.65% interest. Would it make more sense to pay our debts and not have to rent our own historic building?

Except for one mill, we have lost our logging industry and the working families who moved on when the jobs were gone. The danger to our communities from massive wildfires is only growing worse. The public roads through the forest are being gated and destroyed hampering both search and rescue and fire suppression. Kick- ing the can down the road won’t pay our debt and it won’t make our communities safer.

Trinity County has the tools we need; if we elect the people who are willing to use them. We do not have to reinvent the wheel. We can use methods and ideas that are already working for counties in California and in other states. One option is to take back true public participation on our public lands using Coordination. When properly administrated, Coordination gives us a meaningful seat at the table with the Federal Land man- agers and the State of California. Trinity County is not a ward of the State. I have spoken with Supervisors and Commissioners and I am very familiar with this process. Trinity County has the means to help ourselves. We need to have people who understand the process and will use it. We can reduce the fire hazards and im- prove our economy at the same time.

The State of Jefferson movement and other movements across our State shows a deep dissatisfaction and frus- tration with the way our local and state governments are functioning. They are not listening to us and they do not care. We have a lot of local people who are talented and have the expertise to find solutions to alleviate or eliminate many of our problems. The establishment is satisfied with the status quote. It is time to have supervisors in place who do not have their own agendas and who are willing to work with the people to make some much needed changes to Trinity County.

Education- My education, training and discipline is largely a result of the diligence of my parents who believed that par- ents should be authority figures for as opposed to friends to their children as is often the case these days. I didn’t much appreciate that concept as a child, but I will forever be in their debt for the love, support, guidance and discipline they have given me over the years both as a child and as a grown man. Their parenting was instrumental in providing me the tools necessary to be successful in life and a responsible member of society. My entire life from the age of 17, nearly 40 years, has been dedicated to public service. Our Found- ing Fathers were very wise and intelligent men. Many were self-educated. I too have obtained a great deal of knowledge through self-education above and beyond my formal educa- tion. My real world experience serving with and training marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen the world over both foreign and domestic is a journey that has been pivotal in making me the man I am. Upon completion of a 23 year military career I began a second career as a peace officer and have served 14 years in that capacity. This experience has further expanded my knowledge base and I continue to self- educate. As a peace officer I earned my Advanced POST Certificate in 2011.
