Rules & Regulations Agreement During the past 20 years, hundreds of high school students from all over the country have participated in a Christendom Summer Program. Many of them have said that the program was a life-changing experience as it offered them an opportunity to grow in their understanding of the Catholic Faith, to experience the joy of Christian fellowship, and to make friends for life. Due to our increasingly secular society, we are experiencing an insensitivity to many Christian values and aspects of Catholic teaching. At Christendom College, we endeavor to find and affirm the good in the midst of the challenges of modern culture. In order for our Summer Program participants to more fully immerse themselves in the Christendom experience, we require that they abide by the following rules and regulations, which serve as aids to living a truly Catholic life: 1. Practice Christian Charity: Treat all those around you with respect, honesty, charity and courtesy. This eliminates such behaviors as disrespect, bad language (cussing, swearing, cursing, profanity), gossiping, exclusivity, etc. The practice of Christian charity also includes chastity and appropriate physical interaction. Students are expected to refrain from any inappropriate and unchaste physical conduct during their time in the Program. Such behavior may be a ground for discipline and dismissal from the Program. Further, any sexual harassment or contact may also result in the involvement of law enforcement and reports to appropriate authorities where required, in addition to dismissal. -

Throughout Anglo-Saxon and Norman times, many people – not just rich kings and bishops - went to the Holy Land on a Pilgrimage, despite the long and dangerous journey – which often took seven or eight years! 'The Conquest of the Holy Land by Saladin'
‘The Conquest of the Holy Land by Saladin’ This account of Saladin’s conquest of the Holy Land has come down to us in association with the Chronicon Anglicanum of Ralph of Coggeshall, a Cistercian from Essex who was one of the most important historians of early thirteenth-century England. However, while the author who compiled the tract may have been English, Ralph himself was not the person responsible. The particular value of this tract is that while in its present form it probably dates from c. 1220, it incorporates an earlier eye-witness account from a soldier who took part in the defence of Jerusalem and was wounded during the siege. The later compiler expanded this, adding details concerning the holy sites taken by the Muslims, quite possibly taken from a contemporary pilgrim guide, a brief account of the subsequent Third Crusade, which seems to have been taken from the much longer ‘Itinerary of King Richard’ by Richard de Templo, 1 and various passages of lamentation and moralising over the supposed iniquities of the Christians that had led God to allow the Muslims to succeed. The text has been translated from the De Expugnatione Terra Sanctae per Saladinum, in Ralph of Coggeshall, Chronicon Anglicanum, ed. J. Stevenson (Rolls Series, London 1875), 209-62. Use has been made of a previous translation of some passages from this tract by James Brundage, The Crusades: A Documentary History, (Milwaukee, 1962), 153-159, although the version here, which is a complete translation, and thus much fuller than the extracts used by Brundage, has been made afresh from the Latin text. -

Introduction: The first Crusade, a massive and unprecedented undertaking in the western world, differed from the majority of subsequent crusades into the Holy Land in an important way: it contained no royalty and was undertaken with very little direct support from the ruling families of Western Europe. This aspect of the crusade led to the development of sophisticated hierarchies and vassalages among the knights who led the crusade. These relationships culminated in the formation of the Crusader States, Latin outposts in the Levant surrounded by Muslim states, and populated primarily by non-Catholic or non-Christian peoples. Despite the difficulties engendered by this situation, the Crusader States managed to maintain control over the Holy Land for much of the twelfth century, and, to a lesser degree, for several decades after the Fall of Jerusalem in 1187 to Saladin. -
A Chronological Particular Timeline of Near East and Europe History
Introduction This compilation was begun merely to be a synthesized, occasional source for other writings, primarily for familiarization with European world development. Gradually, however, it was forced to come to grips with the elephantine amount of historical detail in certain classical sources. Recording the numbers of reported war deaths in previous history (many thousands, here and there!) initially was done with little contemplation but eventually, with the near‐exponential number of Humankind battles (not just major ones; inter‐tribal, dynastic, and inter‐regional), mind was caused to pause and ask itself, “Why?” Awed by the numbers killed in battles over recorded time, one falls subject to believing the very occupation in war was a naturally occurring ancient inclination, no longer possessed by ‘enlightened’ Humankind. In our synthesized histories, however, details are confined to generals, geography, battle strategies and formations, victories and defeats, with precious little revealed of the highly complicated and combined subjective forces that generate and fuel war. Two territories of human existence are involved: material and psychological. Material includes land, resources, and freedom to maintain a life to which one feels entitled. It fuels war by emotions arising from either deprivation or conditioned expectations. Psychological embraces Egalitarian and Egoistical arenas. Egalitarian is fueled by emotions arising from either a need to improve conditions or defend what it has. To that category also belongs the individual for whom revenge becomes an end in itself. Egoistical is fueled by emotions arising from material possessiveness and self‐aggrandizations. To that category also belongs the individual for whom worldly power is an end in itself. -

Taxation and Voting Rights in Medieval England and France
TAXATION AND VOTING RIGHTS IN MEDIEVAL ENGLAND AND FRANCE Yoram Barzel and Edgar Kiser ABSTRACT We explore the relationship between voting rights and taxation in medieval England and France. We hypothesize that voting was a wealth-enhancing institution formed by the ruler in order to facili- tate pro®table joint projects with subjects. We predict when voting rightsand tax paymentswill be linked to each other, as well asto the projectsinducing them, and when they will become separated. We classify taxes into three types: customary, consensual and arbitrary. Customary taxes that did not require voting were dominant in both countriesin the early medieval period. Thesepay- ments, ®xed for speci®c purposes, were not well suited for funding new, large-scale projects. Consensual taxation, in which voting rightsand tax paymentswere tightly linked, wasusedto ®nance new, large-scale collective projects in both England and France. Strong rule-of-law institutions are necessary to produce such taxes. In England, where security of rule remained high, the rela- tionship between tax payments and voting rights was maintained. In France, an increase in the insecurity of rule, and the accompany- ing weakening of voting institutions, produced a shift to arbitrary taxation and a disjunction between tax payments and voting rights. These observations, as well as many of the details we con- sider, are substantially in conformity with the predictions of our model.
