His family was forced to immigrate to Turkey for fear of losing their Turkish identity. He graduated from Ege University Faculty of Agriculture in 1969 and earned his professorship in 1989. He has authored 12 course books and over 200 scientific articles. He has always tried to pass novelties and scientific knowledge on to farmers, who are his target audience. These activities earned him many scientific awards and plaques of appreciation. His achievements include •“Gödence Village Agricultural Development Cooperative Achievement Award, 2003”; •“TMMOB Chamber of Agricultural Engineers Scientific Award, 2004”; and •“Turkish Sheep Breeders Scientific Award, 2009”. His name was given to a Street in Acıpayam (denizli) in 2003. In addition to his course books, Prof. Kaymakçı is also the author of five books on agricultural and scientific policies. They include •Notes on Turkey’s Agriculture, 2009; •Agricultural Articles Against Global Capitalization, 2010; •Agriculture Is Independence, 2011; •Famine and Imperialism, 2012 (Editor); and •Science Political Articles Against Globalization, 2012. Kaymakçı is the President of the Rhodes and Kos and the Dodecanese Islands Turks Culture and Solidarity Association since 1996. Under his presidency, the association reflected the problems of the Turks living in Rhodes and Kos to organizations including Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Parliamentary Association of the European Council (PA CE), the United Nations and the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FEUN).

Received 1/06/92, in revised form 22/03/93, accepted 29/03/93. ABSTRACT The autumnal circulation of the Cretan Sea is discussed on the basis of CTD data from the POEM-3 croise (autumn 1986). Analysis of the thermohaline and dyna­ mic regimes of the basin revealed the existence of a large scale cyclonic gyre. In addition to the data, a numerical model was used to compute the steady-wind dri­ ven circulation pattern, taking into consideration the autumnal fields of water den­ sity. The resulting dynamic structure of the Cretan Sea waters differs from that of the other seasons. In the surface layer of the western Cretan Sea down to 100 rn predominated a relatively brackish water layer of Black Sea origin. In the SE Cretan Sea, this water mass penetrated as far southeast as the Kasos Strait. During this season, the circulation in the adjacent basins consisted of the permanent cyclo- . nic and anticyclonic gyres and was found to be similar to those of the 1986, 1987 winter and summer periods. The Rhodos and Antikithira straits appeared as the flow entrances of the Cretan Sea, while the main outflow of the Cretan Sea takes place through the Kasos and Elafonisos straits.

    Historia naturalis bulgarica, 21: 13-48, 2015 Terrestrial gastropods (Mollusca, Gastropoda) of Strandzha Mountain and the Black Sea coast (Bulgaria and Turkey) Atanas Irikov, Ivelin Mollov Abstract: The current synopsis presents an overview of the terrestrial malacofauna of Strandzha Mountain in Bulgaria and Turkey, based on previously published and new data. As a result of the research we recorded 101 species and subspecies of ter- restrial molluscs belonging to 27 families. The data on the terrestrial malacofauna from the Turkish part of Strandzha is entirely new and presented here for the first time. The synopsis includes a list of synonymous species and subspecies concerning the area of research, all known localities, new localities reported for 50 taxa, systematic and environmental data. For the first time a zoogeographical and conservation analysis of the terrestrial snails is made. Key words: terrestrial gastropods, snails, slugs, Strandzha Mountain, Bulgaria, Turkey. This paper discusses some possible reasons for these lacunae, having to do with dialect methodology, and Greek history and geography. It then moves on to employ the work of Kontossopoulos and Newton in an attempt to arrive at a more detailed classification of Greek dialects than has hitherto been attempted, using a small number of phonological criteria, and to provide a map, based on this classification, of the overall geographical configuration of Greek dialects. Introduction Tzitzilis (2000, 2001) divides the history of the study of Greek dialects into three chronological phases. First, there was work on individual dialects with a historical linguistic orientation focussing mainly on phonological features. (We can note that some of this early work, such as that by Psicharis and Hadzidakis, was from time to time coloured by linguistic-ideological preferences related to the diglossic situation.) The second period saw the development of structural dialectology focussing not only on phonology but also on the lexicon. Thirdly, he cites the move into generative dialectology signalled by Newton’s pioneering book (1972). As also pointed out by Sifianou (Forthcoming), however, Tzitzilis indicates that there has been very little research on social variation (Sella 1994 is essentially a discussion of registers and argots only), or on syntax, and no linguistic atlases at all except for the one produced for Crete by Kontossopoulos (1988).
