2018-2019 Orientation Services Annual Report Departmental Mission The mission of Orientation Services is to facilitate the successful matriculation and transition of undergraduate first-year and transfer students to the University of Iowa. Orientation Services fulfills an essential function in support of the retention of new students to the University of Iowa. This function can only be fulfilled through the development of current students into peer leaders and mentors and in collaboration with student life and academic partners. Orientation Services Goals Orientation Services supports student sense of belonging through connections to institutional, academic, and social networks. Orientation Services serves as a key mechanism for transmitting Hawkeye values, expectations, norms, and traditions. Orientation Services helps new students develop self-efficacy to succeed from day one. New Initiatives in 2019 Success at Iowa Kognito Suicide Prevention modules in fall 2019 course Converting old Captivate modules to video format New integration with Cash Course and ICON Introduced a new tool for students to track course progress in ICON Hired a video production student assistant in partnership with the Division of Online Education Orientation Group registration in the Main Library for CLAS groups Late Night Facts & Folklore tour Used Swipe Technology in Get Involved Session "A Day in the Life" Parent Session led by OLs Piloted new reservation system in F10-F13 Orientation surveys embedded in Excelling at Iowa platform Combined student leader roles in Orientation and On Iowa! SUCCESS AT IOWA GOALS: Success at Iowa sets the tone for students’ transition to Iowa and provides a foundation for student success in future semesters. Success at Iowa introduces and reinforces the knowledge and expectations of new students through developmentally sequenced content. Success at Iowa provides students familiarity with commonly used tools at Iowa. Success at Iowa outlines a breadth and depth of academic, institutional, and social resources. Orientation facilitates the academic transition of new students to Iowa. Orientation connects new students to peers, including current students who serve as positive role models for how to succeed at Iowa. Orientation introduces students and parents/families to resources available at Iowa. Orientation helps parents and families understand their roles in their student’s transition to Iowa. Orientation provides high-impact leadership opportunities for undergraduate students to share their talents and institutional knowledge while role modeling what it means to be a Hawkeye. PROGRAM OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS: Students will… Register for classes. Obtain their Iowa One Card. Connect with at least one other new student. Confirm the University of Iowa as their school of choice. Be introduced to the Iowa Challenge. Learn about resources available on campus. LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS: Students will be able to… Describe how to build a balanced schedule. (two day programs) Utilize their degree audit to plan current and future semesters. Describe how to contact their academic advisor. Identify one person other than their academic advisor to contact with questions. Utilize the various resources within MyUI. Summarize what needs to be accomplished before starting classes. Examine myths and realities associated with the college experience. (two day programs) LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR FAMILIES/PARENTS: Parents and families will be able to… Articulate at least one way they plan to support their student’s transition. List at least one resource they may utilize to support their student’s success. Explain how their student’s rights and responsibilities differ from high school and/or previous institutions. The program is free and occurs on day 2 of each first-year orientation program. 249 siblings participated in the program in 2019, and the average participant age was 13 years.
