He is the first head of an American dance company ever to be so honored. New York, NY, May 23, 2012 – Last night at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, Lar Lubovitch was awarded the 20th annual prize for best choreography by the Prix Benois de la Danse. Lubovitch is the first head of an American dance company ever presented with the award. He was honored for his creation of Crisis Variations, which premiered at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City on November 9, 2011. The work, for seven dancers, is set to a commissioned score by composer Yevgeniy Sharlat, and the score was performed live at its premiere by the ensemble Le Train Bleu, under the direction of conductor Ransom Wilson. To celebrate the occasion, the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company performed the duet from Meadow for the audience of 2,500 at the Bolshoi. The dancers in the duet were Katarzyna Skarpetowska and Brian McGinnis. The laureates for best choreography over the previous 19 years include: John Neumeier, Jiri Kylian, Roland Petit, Angelin Preljocaj, Nacho Duato, Alexei Ratmansky, Boris Eifman, Wayne McGregor, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and Jorma Elo. Other star performers and important international figures from the world of dance received prizes at this year’s award ceremony. In addition to the award for choreography given to Lubovitch, the winners in other categories were: For the best performance by a ballerina: Alina Cojocaru for the role of Julie in “Liliom” at the Hamburg Ballet. -

We continue to grow artistically and financially into one of the leading Ballet companies in the country. Press Information → 2020/21 Season THE VIENNA ① STATE BALLET 2020/21 »Along with my team and my dancers, I intend to work towards developing the Vienna State Ballet into a major hotspot of the art of dance in Austria and Europe forming an ensemble that reflects and inspires the traditions, changes and innovations of the lively metropolis, city of art and music, Vienna.« Martin Schläpfer Martin Schläpfer takes over the direction of the Vienna State Ballet with the 2020 / 21 season. The renowned Swiss choreographer and ballet director has recently led the multi-award-winning Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg to international acclaim. His works fascinate with their intensity, their virtuosity, their deeply moving images and a concise language of movement, which is understood as making music with the body, but always reflects the atmosphere and questions of today’s world. Several performances offer the opportunity to encounter Martin Schläpfer’s art – including two world premieres: Two new pieces for Vienna are being created to Gustav Mahler’s 4th Symphony and Dmitri Shostakovich’s 15th Symphony, which also mark the beginning of the intensive creative dialogue that Martin Schläpfer will be establishing with the artists of his ensemble in the coming years. As director, Martin Schläpfer is a bridge-builder who will naturally continue to cultivate the great ballet traditions, but will also enrich the programme with important contemporary artists and a great variety of choreographic signatures. The masters of American neo-classical ballet George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins will continue to be among the fixed stars of the Vienna repertoire, as will the Dutchman Hans van Manen. -

Tuesday 1 June 2021 The Royal Opera House announces full details of the 2021/22 Season • 11 new productions, including 5 world premieres, and 20 revivals. • An exciting roster of UK and international talent with many debuts The Royal Opera House today confirms details for its 2021/22 Season, the first full Season since 2019. Opening on Monday 13 September, the Season includes five world premieres from The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera, classic revivals and an exciting roster of international and UK talent performing across the two stages of the Royal Opera House. In its 90th anniversary year, The Royal Ballet presents a Season that respects the past and heralds the future. Three world premieres, including Wayne McGregor’s The Dante Project, Christopher Wheeldon’s Like Water for Chocolate and a new work by American choreographer Kyle Abraham, are performed alongside much-loved 19th-century classics and heritage ballets by Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan. The Linbury Theatre hosts a raft of partnerships and co-productions including with Ballet Black, Alessandra Ferri, Yorke Dance Project and a world premiere from Company Wayne McGregor. Creative opportunities for emerging talent will also feature with Draft Works and the Next Generation Festival. The Season culminates in July 2022 with The Royal Ballet 1 making a welcome return to international touring with a three-week tour of Japan where the Company will perform Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon and Peter Wright’s Giselle. The Royal Opera Season will open with a new production of Verdi’s Rigoletto, directed by Oliver Mears – his first production since becoming The Royal Opera’s Director of Opera in 2017. -

f Über vier Millionen Besucher*innen haben während der gesamten Direktionszeit Robert Meyers von 1. September 2007 bis zum Ende der aktuellen Saison rund 4040 Vorstellungen in der Volksoper besucht.1 Die durchschnittliche Auslastung lag bei 82 %. Mit knapp 90 % wurde in der Saison 2019/20 die höchste Auslastung erreicht, bis der Erfolgskurs im März 2020 durch die Covid-19-Pandemie gestoppt wurde. Bis Ende Juni 2022 werden in der Direktion Robert Meyer 135 Premieren stattgefunden haben (31 Operetten, 50 Opern, 21 Musicals, 25 Ballette und 8 Volksoper Spezial- Produktionen). Neben Ur- und Erstaufführungen insbesondere von Kinder- und Jugendopern in der Volksoper wurde das Kasino am Schwarzenbergplatz seit der Saison 2016/17 einmal jährlich als Heimstätte zeitgenössischer Opernproduktionen etabliert. Besonders erfreulich ist der Erfolg unseres Kulturvermittlungsprogramms Junge Volksoper und der hohe Anteil an Kindern und Jugendlichen unter den Volksopernbesucher*innen, den wir von 9,56 % in der Saison 2006/07 auf durchschnittlich 12 % steigern konnten. In der Saison 2019/20 waren sogar 15,6 % unserer Besucher*innen Kinder und Jugendliche. Die durchschnittlichen Karten-Einnahmen pro Saison lagen bei 8,8 Mio. Euro, die Einnahmen aus Sponsoring und Fundraising lagen durchschnittlich über 500.000 Euro. Mit elf Premieren, drei Wiederaufnahmen und 18 Repertoirestücken laden wir zur 15. und letzten Spielzeit der Direktion Robert Meyer an der Volksoper Wien – und das erneut mit einer enormen künstlerischen Bandbreite. Der Anpfiff zur neuen Saison ertönt mit der Fußballoperette Roxy und ihr Wunderteam. Mit fünf Opernpremieren reisen wir von Wien über Moskau in die Schweiz, nach Venedig und Hollywood: Der Rosenkavalier entführt in das Wien der Zeit Maria Theresias, während Benjamin Brittens Der Tod in Venedig uns in den Bann der gleichnamigen Lagunenstadt zieht. -

News Release 11 March 2020 V&A Performance Festival 25 April – 3 May 2020 #VAPerformanceFestival The V&A Performance Festival returns in 2020 exploring dance in all its forms – from traditional and classical styles to the contemporary and modern, celebrating both emerging talent and world-renowned practitioners. Highlights of the annual festival include a holographic dance performance viewed through Magic Leap’s cutting-edge spatial computing headsets; a voyage through the heritage of South Asian dance with a procession of dazzling Kathak dancers; a film exploring the iconic collaboration between Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova and renowned Indian dancer Uday Shankar; a 1920s themed social dance class led by Swing Patrol with live music from Mississippi Swing Three; a May Pole dance and May Day flower crown making workshop; an in conversation with Akram Khan and host of performances, calligraphy and movement workshops, talks and tours celebrating the V&A Collections through a dance lens. Opening during the festival, the new display On Point: Royal Academy of Dance at 100 will explore the 100-year history of the Royal Academy of Dance. Using costume, designs, film and a host of unique materials it will celebrate the joy of movement through the last century of dance and highlights the Royal Academy of Dance’s contemporary programmes. The display features material from both the V&A and the Royal Academy of Dance’s rich archives with highlights including a costume designed by Wilhelm for Adeline Genée in La Danse (1911), a harlequin sculpture by Alfred Gilbert (1942), illustrations by Fougasse of Ballet Exercise for Athletes (1950s) and shoes worn by Darcey Bussell at her farewell performance as a member of The Royal Ballet (2007). -

Over the centuries, dancers and dance makers have shaped and changed ballet, taking its technique to fresh and exciting places. In every generation a handful of visionaries can inspire us to see ballet through a new lens, and in turn inspire others to create. Volt is a celebration of this process. I first saw Wayne McGregor’s work in the early 2000s. The piece, brainstate, featured Deborah Bull, then a principal of The Royal Ballet, and it was riveting. Wayne went on to create works for the world’s most prestigious ballet companies. -

#6 Shostakovich Trilogy (Parts 1 and 3) in 2014/15 Season The Tempest Postponed August 15, 2014… Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced that the company will be performing Alexei Ratmansky’s Shostakovich Trilogy (Parts 1 and 3) May 30 – June 7, 2015 in Toronto at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The work will replace Mr. Ratmansky’s The Tempest, which is postponed to a future season, and will be presented as part of a mixed programme with Being and Nothingness by Choreographic Associate and Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté. Recognized as one of the most versatile and artistically wide-ranging of contemporary choreographers, Mr. Ratmansky has always maintained a deep and abiding connection to the cultural climate and traditions of his native Russia. In his Shostakovich Trilogy, he turns to the towering musical figure of the ballet’s title and explores through three key works the conflicting dualities of art and politics, imaginative freedom and responsibility, that shaped much of the composer’s life. The San Francisco Chronicle hailed Shostakovich Trilogy “a masterpiece” and The New York Times described it as “fascinating, poetic, enigmatic and bittersweet”. The National Ballet of Canada’s 2014/15 season begins with a tour of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to the Lincoln Center in New York City, September 9 – 14, 2014. The Fall Season in Toronto opens with Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon, November 8 – 16, 2014, followed by Nijinsky, by John Neumeier, November 22 – 30, 2014.
