15 A MESSAGE FROM EVAN MCKIE

If it had not been for Nadia's eye for talent and Solomon's helping hand, I definitely would not have been given such great opportunities after my time at the Academy. As a youngster, I was so inspired by their galas and then I discovered the beauty of training with Nadia. I used to come to the Academy and take secret classes to improve my technique and learn more about what my possibilities could be as a ! I never thought then that I would one day meet these two wonderful people again by dancing in the ''Stars of the 21st Century Galas'' all over the world! I am grateful for the strong training and intelligent guidance I received at the Academy and how many doors it opened for me. Solomon and Nadia are a part of the and still remain current with what is going on all over the world!

All my love to you both. May the Academy continue to thrive. Spasibo-

A MESSAGE FROM ALYS SHEE

Congratulations on 30 successful years of Academy of Ballet and Jazz and with Stars of the 21st Century galas, both of which developed Canadian talent and put Canada on the World map for classical ballet. What an amazing accomplishment!

I came to the Academy of Ballet and Jazz as an inflexible, long limbed 9 year old who wanted to dance classical ballet and travel the World to perform on interna- tional stages. Nadia and Solomon saw an ability in me of which I was unaware. They gave me the confidence and training to pursue my dreams. I spent most of my evenings with my Academy family and under Nadia's watchful eyes. At the age of 14 and after much hard work I won a silver medal at the Moscow Interna- tional Ballet Competition. A couple years later I won the Grand Prix at the Star of the 21st Century competition. Thanks to Nadia and Solomon I had the wonderful and unique privilege of dancing in the Stars of the 21st Century galas in Panama City, Panama and Paris, . I am forever grateful to them and to the Academy for their time, effort and constant belief in me. Their training has allowed me to develop my stage confidence, perform on international stages and travel the world.

I wish you many more equally successful years! I wish I could have been home for the wonderful celebration. Merde for the show, and see you all in August.

Hugs xoxo

Only kind words can describe the emotional and companionate contributions Nadia Veselova-Tencer has made to all of her students, friends and acquain- tances. Nadia has successfully created a way of connecting with her students that enhances their natural abilities. To have a teacher and mentor that wants you to be the best that you can be is the rarest gift that one can ever find. After a decade and a half of Nadia's mentorship I have learned to live my life com- passionately and with a kind heart. I trust that Nadia is going to continue on her path of excellence and continue to surprise us with her amazing productions throughout the world.

Vladimir Ivanov, is a man with honesty and integrity that wanted only the best for his students and always lead by example. His talent for describing reality taught all of his students how to be precise and, consequently, proud of their work. His teachings on drama, make-up and classical technique showed us how our theatrical ballet lives could be and should be.

Vladimir's mentorship has contributed to the lives of all his students and I trust that all of his current and future pupils are going to enjoy his guidance as much as I have.

A MESSAGE FROM MELISSA PANETTA

I started dancing with Nadia at Academy of Ballet and Jazz when it first opened. I grew up in this amazing environment for almost 25 years and it was a place I considered a second home.

Over the years, Nadia and Solomon provided their students with so many incredible opportunities. Whether it was dancing with some of the best dancers around the world in such productions as The Nutcracker and Giselle, or helping them train for world prestigious competitions, everything was executed to perfection with the results to prove it.

I first came to Academy of Ballet and Jazz recreationally, but then because of Nadia's gift of teaching, I fell in love with the art of ballet. I am so proud to be apart of this school and have nothing but the utmost admiration for everything they've accomplished through all their hard work and dedication.

I can never thank Nadia enough for her patience, guidance and most of all love in helping make my dance dreams come true.

Melissa Panetta Former Dancer with The Georgia Ballet. Soloist with Canadian Ballet Theatre. Attended Professional Ballet Programs in , Florida, and Louisville.

17 A MESSAGE FROM SARAH CLARK

Nadia and Solomon Tencer are true believers in your potential and strive to help you be the best that you can be. I started with The Academy of Ballet and Jazz at the age of four, and for over twenty years it has been my second home. After dancing around the world with various companies and performing in some of the most beautiful theatres, I always find myself coming back to the studio and learning new ways to improve on my tech- nique and quality of dance. I cannot express enough how grateful I am or the training and guidance I have received from all the teachers at the studio. Nadia is an incredible teacher and mentor and I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to be under her influence over all these years. Nadia taught me to have the courage and persistence to keep reaching for my dreams. I would not have reached my goals as a dancer and as a person without the benefit of Nadia's knowledge, dedication and love. I was a professional ballerina for over 27 years and I owe all my gratitude to Nadia and Solomon!

A MESSAGE FROM EVGENI DOKOUKINE

Being a professional dancer would have never been possible without the strong foundation that I have received from the Academy of Ballet and Jazz. This is a school which has not only taught me the classical syllabus, but has taught me how to be a professional dancer and artist within a classical ballet company. I will always be thankful for the opportunity that I have received to learn from Nadia Veselova-Tencer, as she is not only a teacher of international level with incredible knowledge, but a mentor who was al- ways able to find ways for me excel even when I did not think could. 18 A MESSAGE FROM MELODY ICHIMURA

As a former student of Academy of Ballet and Jazz, my years under Nadia's tutelage have provided me with an exceptionally refined understanding of the art of ballet.

Now as a teacher at the academy, I am continued to be inspired by her generosity and unsparing love for her students. Speaking on behalf of all her pupils, I can say she has inspired in us, a great respect and love for the art form.

My time at the academy as both a teacher and choreographer have been filled with countless unforgettable experiences.

In 2014, I was invited to showcase my work at the world renowned, Stars of the 21st Century ballet gala in Paris, France. I could never have dreamed of such an invitation and I am forever grateful to Nadia and Solomon for the extraordinary opportunity.

I have also worked with the students of the academy in preparation for the Youth American Grand Prix ballet competition. I can proudly say that we have been met with great success, having placements in both 1st and 2nd place in the contemporary category.

None of this would have been possible had it not been for Nadia's encour- agement and guidance. She inspires me every day to love what I do and I hope I am able to share this love with my own students.

19 A MESSAGE FROM URSULA SZKOLAK

I have the fondest memories of my many years of studies under Nadia Veselova-Tencer. I can remember even at a young age the effect that Nadia had not only on me, but all her students. The attention, discipline and caring she gave me and so many others is something that I will never forget. Her guidance, for me, also definitely planted the seed for the love of art, dance and especially the classics of – and that is something that I am greatly thankful for. Nadia not only was an extraordi- nary teacher of technique and artistry, she also passed on to me the pride and honor of tradition that one should feel for practicing this craft.

So, on behalf of me and so many of your students - thank you Nadia for everything you have given us to make us the dancers and people that we are today. You are much loved!

A MESSAGE FROM SAHRA MAIRA

Way back in 1991 my Dad looked though the yellow pages in search of a good ballet studio for his daughter. He found one; Academy of Ballet and Jazz. What he didn’t realize is that he found Nadia Veselova-Tencer. A great woman and a great ballet teacher of Vaganova training.

I have known Nadia for 27 years! It is thanks to her knowledge and careful attention that at a young age I grew to love ballet and dance. She instilled in me discipline, rigor, and fluidity in training. Technique was always worked on, but besides pirouettes and jumps she asked us to express something when we dance. I remember this one day in class she said: “Use your hands in a way to feel, like a blind person does, to feel.” She always would remind us that feeling must be conveyed through your arms and hands. Coordination of the upper body was so important to her and she teaches it so well.

Nadia planted the seeds of love, the seed of dance, within me, that which she nurtured through many years. I am grateful and thankful to her that I am living my childhood dream of dancing professionally!

Much love to you Nadia!

Sahra Maira Soloist with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens

20 A MESSAGE FROM JÄRVI RAUDSEPP

I owe my entire ballet career to the extraordinary training I received at Academy of Ballet and Jazz. From age 8 - 17, I studied intensively with Nadia, Vladimir, and former beloved teacher Natasha. Next stop - as a 17 year old graduate fresh from the school - getting hired with a top national ballet company in Europe!

I am eternally grateful to have been guided so expertly towards my goals. The training prepared me to keep up with the demands of ballet company life. From being pushed and encouraged every class, to learning the classical repertoire performed around the world, everything prepared me for the future.

Now, I've experienced 15 years so far full of dancing professionally and becoming a ballet teacher. This past season I returned to Academy of Ballet and Jazz as a teacher! I absolutely love passing on all of Nadia's lessons to new generations. Getting to share this gift with others is incredible. Congratulations to the most special ballet school in the world on 30 seasons!

Le Corsaire is a ballet typically presented in three acts, with a libretto originally created by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges loosely based on the poem The Corsair by Lord Byron. Originally choreographed by Joseph Mazilier to the music of Adolphe Adam, it was first presented by the ballet of the Théâtre Impérial de l´Opéra in Paris on 23 January 1856. All modern produc- tions of Le Corsaire are derived from the revivals staged by the for the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg throughout the mid to late 19th century. The ballet has many celebrated passages, which are often extracted from the full-length work and performed independently: the scene being performed is Le Jardin Animé,

LIBRETTO

ACT 1 It’s a beautiful spring morning. A magical flower has sprung up overnight. It is unlike any other flower. It is multicolored and many curious butterflies, bees and birds are hovering around it. Suddenly the flower opens it’s petals to reveal the tiniest little girl inside. She is no bigger than a thumb, so they call her Thumbelina. Everyone together to celebrate.

Out of nowhere a strong wind blows in and scatters the butterflies and bees. Thumbelina is swept up and carried to a faraway place.

ACT II Thumbelina wakes up in the morning and finds herself in a strange marsh surrounded by white lilies. A happy mother frog hops by with her little babies. Mother frog teaches Thumbelina how to sing and dance so that she will be a star of the marsh. They all dance and sing together until finally the frogs hop away.

The lush leaves of summer slowly change to the falling leaves of autumn. Thumbelina loves to be surrounded by the falling leaves. Fewer and fewer leaves fall as winter approaches. A friendly mouse scurrying through the field realizes that poor Thumbelina is almost frozen and he takes her back to his home. Thumbelina is left all alone and she is frightened. She discovers a lovely Nightingale lying fast asleep. Thumbelina examines the beautiful bird to make sure it is not injured and then gently encourages it to awaken. The Nightingale is revived and Thumbelina has hope that the bird will fly her away from this strange place. Magic fairies appear to help Thumbelina and the Nightingale soar off to a Magic Kingdom.

ACT III The Magic Kingdom is a wonderful place with colorful flowers and enchanted blue butterflies dancing happily together. The fairies lead Thumbelina and the Nightingale to the Kingdom where they meet the flower fairies, pink Monarch butterflies and silver moths. Tiny Thumbelina fascinates them and they introduce her to the handsome young Prince Cornelius, who magically appears from a huge flower. He likes Thumbelina very much so the Queen presents her with a special gift- a pair of her own shimmering wings. All the inhabitants of the Magic Kingdom joyously dance in celebration and they lived happily ever after.

THE END

27 28 Don Quixote Music by Ludwig Minkus

The ballet Don Quixote is based on the celebrated novel by Miguel de Cervantes. The story follows the adventures and misadventures of the rusty old knight, Don Quixote, and his faithful servant, Sancho Panza, as well as the romance between two young lovers Kitri and Basilio. The first known use of the story’s theme for ballet was in the 1750s by the choreographer Jean Georges Noverre in . The ballet was created by Marius Petipa, the French choreographer who is known as the father of classical ballet. Petipa’s production of Don Quixote was first performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia, on December 14, 1869. Petipa’s original choreography is now virtually lost since his production was generally replaced by a new one choreographed by Alexandre Gorsky in the early 20th century. Though a few and dances have been reworked by Russian choreographers, it is basically Gorsky’s version that is presented today.

29 30 Walpurgis Night Composer: Charles Gounod

Walpurgisnacht Ballet was choreographed for a 1975 production of by the Théâtre National de l’Opéra, danced by the Paris Opéra Ballet. It depicts the bacchanal which Mephistopheles has invited Faust to attend. It is Walpurgis Night (the eve of May 1st) in the Harz Mountains. Since the premiere of Gounod’s Faust, there have been many versions of the ballet choreographed for productions of the opera, as well as stand-alone ballets. The Walpurgisnacht scene occurs at the beginning of the opera’s last act, when Mephistopheles brings Faust to watch the traditional celebration on the eve of May Day when the spirits are released to wander at will. Although the ballet does not depict Walpurgisnacht per se, it does build on a sense of joyful revelry.
