Recognised as a world heritage site, the charming city of Famagusta (or Gazimağusa in Turkish), is second only to Kyrenia. Like Kyrenia it boasts an atmospheric old town surrounded by crumbling Venetian walls. From its humble origins as a small fishing village in the thirteenth century, Famagusta rapidly evolved to become a major commercial centre between East and West. In 1489 it became Cyprus's capital under Venetian rule and in 1570 was subject to a year long siege from the Ottoman Empire. Famagusta boasts some of the most culturally diverse architecture in all of Cyprus. The Cathedral of St Nicholas (Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque); The Othello Tower, a 15th century Venetian structure believed to be the scene of Shakespeare's tragedy, Othello; and the church of St Peter and St Paul dating from the Lusignan period (Sinan Pasha Mosque) are just a few of the many historical sites you can visit.
