In a 1960 referendum, the three religious groups were asked to choose to belong to either the Greek Cypriot or the Turkish Cypriot community. They opted to belong to the Greek Cypriot community. The members of all three groups, therefore, enjoy the same privileges, rights and benefits as the members of the Greek Cypriot community, including voting rights, eligibility for public office and election to official government and state positions, at all levels.

Historical Places İnformation Kyrenia Castle Kyrenia Castle has been standing since the 7th Century and many believe it was built to protect the town against raids from the Arab lands. Throughout the centuries, Kyrenia Castle has undergone many restorations especially during the Lusignan period. Built during an era of knights and archery the castle was designed with this in mind. During reconstruction in 1489 the castle was remodelled to co-inside with the artillery era. Two towers were also added but in 1570 the castle was once again under seige and taken over by the Ottomans. Like any castle built for protection, Kyrenia castle is entered via a bridge built over a moat which was until the 1400’s filled with water. Inside Kyrenia castle you will find a Byzantian church and the tomb of the Ottoman Admiral, Sadik Pasha. Cyprus 2Department of Architecture, Eastern Mediterranean University, Magusa, N. Cyprus Abstract Buildings are the living organisms that are affected by the rapid changes of the world. If they lose their functions or are not maintained, they can die. However, it is possible to re-use these historic buildings according to the changing conditions of contemporary life with the help of technology. In this way, it can be possible to preserve and revitalize the historic witnesses to provide references for further designs. Cyprus is an island at the crossroads of three continents; Europe, Asia and Africa. Thus, the island has achieved combining different cultures in its body and reflecting them in its architecture. Its rich architectural heritage has been composed layer by layer as the history moved from century to century. There are lots of monuments from different periods that were rehabilitated and used for various functions. On this basis, the aim of the study is to discuss re-use of the historic buildings in Northern Cyprus. The argument of the study is presented in two sections. Firstly, different architectural periods are discussed with their specific examples, which have been converted into new uses. This creates a base and presents the general structure of its architectural heritage. It starts with the beginning of the Roman Period (58 BC-330AD) and comes until the end of British Period (1878-1960). Then, related to the first stage, the general re-use strategies and processes are presented.

ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the socio-economic and socio-cultural dynamics of medieval Famagusta from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries. Contrary to the traditional historiography suggesting that Famagusta enjoyed commercial privilege after the fall of Acre in 1291 and lost its importance with the Genoese occupation of the city in 1374, this work offers more detailed analysis of economic and social dynamics of the late medieval Famagusta by examining wide-range of archival evidence and argues that Famagusta maintained its commercial importance until the late fifteenth century. In late medieval ages, Famagusta enjoyed economic prosperity due to its crucial role in Levant trade as a supplier and distributor of agricultural and luxury merchandise.

In a 1960 referendum, the three religious groups were asked to choose to belong to either the Greek Cypriot or the Turkish Cypriot community. They opted to belong to the Greek Cypriot community. The members of all three groups, therefore, enjoy the same privileges, rights and benefits as the members of the Greek Cypriot community, including voting rights, eligibility for public office and election to official government and state positions at all levels.

The group flight usually arrives into Lanarca in the early evening and the group will be met and transferred to the start hotel. The transfer takes approximately 1.5 hrs and includes crossing the border to North Cyprus. Land Only clients should aim to arrive at the hotel this afternoon. In the evening our guide will hold a short meeting to discuss the plan for the following day, to give advice on the local area and to answer any questions. Accommodation: Hotel Pia Bella or similarComfortable Hotel Day 2 Transfer to Catalkoy; walk to Bellapais and visit the monastery; afternoon Kyrenia Castle visit. After the Welcome Briefing, we will have a short 20 minute transfer to Bellapais village and the beautiful 12th century Bellapais Abbey, set in the mountains to the south. There will be some free time to explore the beautiful village and the abbey before starting our short walk to Cattalkoy village where we get the transfer back to Kyrenia. The walk today is mainly along an old dirt track; it is fairly undulating, with views out towards the coast along the way. Kyrenia is a pretty harbour town and a great base from which to explore North Cyprus. Archaeological excavations show the area was first settled as far back as the 10th century BC, and today historic buildings and winding lanes offer a glimpse of the past, sitting side by side with more modern additions.
