Undiscovered Northern Cyprus TOUR CODE: 29460 GRADE: D/L SEPTEMBER 2016 09 Sep - 18 Sep 10 day duration UNDISCOVERED NORTHERN CYPRUS Explore the wonder and beauty of an unspoilt area of North Cyprus © Ramblers Worldwide Holidays 2015 13/10/15 V1 GS HOLIDAY INFORMATION TOUR DESCRIPTION This information is in addition to our General Information Booklet, which is enclosed. Our holiday base is on the north coast of Cyprus in an area long considered the most beautiful part of the island. A wonderful place to visit with much to enjoy, such as its fascinating history, the gothic architecture, stunning natural beauty, untouched beaches and traditional village life. We spend time in the Kyrenian Mountain range, a landscape of majestic limestone peaks on which perch a number of impressive medieval castles. The rolling green hills look simply stunning when the flowers are in full bloom. We will explore the slopes and enjoy the maritime coastal views from high vantage points. Away from the immediate environs of Kyrenia with its picturesque harbour and Venetian castle, we can also visit the serene Bellapais Abbey with its fine Gothic architecture and Buffavento Castle. Trips further afield to the medieval walled city of Famagusta and to the magnificent ancient ruins of Salamis, or the capital Nicosia, may be possible. Our hotel is situated in the centre of Kyrenia and a short walk to the beautiful harbour. Our remaining days will be spent in the unspoilt area of Karpassa, the long isolated peninsula, which points out from the north east of Cyprus and gives the island its distinctive “pan handle” like shape. From this end of Cyprus you can get to Kantara Castle, the easternmost of the three castles (some of which we should have already visited earlier in the week) sitting on top of the North Cyprus Mountains. However, the mountains soon give way to an undulating, remote but fertile landscape, displaying a rich and sometimes unique flora. The area is still home to some remote Greek communities, is rich in remote archaeological sites and bounded by sandy beaches and warm seas. It is home to wild donkeys, who roam around at liberty in the Karpaz National Park. We will enjoy some stunning coastal walks, and explore the Kucukerenkoy nature reserve with its wonderful display for wild flowers and orchids. One walk takes us to Incirli Cave so our itinerary offers great variety. There are some great benefits to visiting this part of Cyprus: being out of the Eurozone gives us better value for our pound, we can enjoy delicious Turkish cuisine and spend time in the limestone mountains rich in botanical beauty – some of which is indigenous to this part of Cyprus. A local guide will accompany us on our walks along with our Ramblers Worldwide leader. © Ramblers Worldwide Holidays 2015 13/10/15 V1 GS ITINERARY Day: Overnight Daily itinerary: Meals: accommodation: Fly London Heathrow via Istanbul to Ercan 1: Airport. Details of your baggage allowance will be confirmed in your travel documents, sent approximately 10 days prior to departure. Please note that most flights may only advertise the flight as arriving in one of the Turkish ports en route to arriving in North Cyprus and may not mention our final arrival point – Ercan airport. It would be a good idea to take note of the flight number and use this as a reference when locating the correct check-in point and for flight information. The transfer from Ercan Airport to the hotel takes about 40 minutes and is by road. The transfer from Hotel Bogaz to Ercan Airport takes about 1 hour and is by road. If you intend joining in Kyrenia and leaving in Bogaz, it is assumed, unless you have advised us otherwise, that you will meet and leave the party at the hotels. Standard. " The remarkable series of photographs illustrating the traveller's record should alone inspire readers with the desire to visit Cyprus. The book is, altogether, thoroughly worth reading." Indeed the book is most interesting, and the numerous photo- graphs are admirable." Daily Telegraph. Throughout the centuries, Kyrenia Castle has undergone many restorations especially during the Lusignan period. Built during an era of knights and archery the castle was designed with this in mind. During reconstruction in 1489 the castle was remodelled to co-inside with the artillery era. Two towers were also added but in 1570 the castle was once again under seige and taken over by the Ottomans. Like any castle built for protection, Kyrenia castle is entered via a bridge built over a moat which was until the 1400’s filled with water. Inside Kyrenia castle you will find a Byzantian church and the tomb of the Ottoman Admiral, Sadik Pasha. • Re-Use of Historic Buildings in North Cyprus
Re-use of historic buildings in North Cyprus G. Ozay1 & N. Ozay2 1Department of Civil Engineering, Eastern Mediterranean University, Magusa, N. Cyprus 2Department of Architecture, Eastern Mediterranean University, Magusa, N. Cyprus Abstract Buildings are the living organisms that are affected by the rapid changes of the world. If they lose their functions or are not maintained, they can die. However, it is possible to re-use these historic buildings according to the changing conditions of contemporary life with the help of technology. In this way, it can be possible to preserve and revitalize the historic witnesses to provide references for further designs. Cyprus is an island at the crossroads of three continents; Europe, Asia and Africa. Thus, the island has achieved combining different cultures in its body and reflecting them in its architecture. Its rich architectural heritage has been composed layer by layer as the history moved from century to century. There are lots of monuments from different periods that were rehabilitated and used for various functions. On this basis, the aim of the study is to discuss re-use of the historic buildings in Northern Cyprus. The argument of the study is presented in two sections. Firstly, different architectural periods are discussed with their specific examples, which have been converted into new uses. This creates a base and presents the general structure of its architectural heritage. It starts with the beginning of the Roman Period (58 BC-330AD) and comes until the end of British Period (1878-1960). Then, related to the first stage, the general re-use strategies and processes are presented.

MEDIEVAL FAMAGUSTA: SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND SOCIO- CULTURAL DYNAMICS (13th to 15th Centuries) by SEYIT ÖZKUTLU A thesis submitted to The University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies Institute of Archaeology and Antiquity College of Arts and Law The University of Birmingham October 2014 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the socio-economic and socio-cultural dynamics of medieval Famagusta from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries. Contrary to the traditional historiography suggesting that Famagusta enjoyed commercial privilege after the fall of Acre in 1291 and lost its importance with the Genoese occupation of the city in 1374, this work offers more detailed analysis of economic and social dynamics of the late medieval Famagusta by examining wide-range of archival evidence and argues that Famagusta maintained its commercial importance until the late fifteenth century. In late medieval ages, Famagusta enjoyed economic prosperity due to its crucial role in Levant trade as a supplier and distributor of agricultural and luxury merchandise.
