Susquehanna University Semester in Cyprus, Fall 2011

What made you decide to study abroad? Studying abroad at my university was mandatory. I chose to go for a full semester because I wanted to immerse myself in another culture for as long as possible. It also helps that federal aid transferred easily for a full semester , so it made studying abroad very affordable.

Why did you pick UNIC and Cyprus? I first listed Cyprus as a potential location to study abroad because of the huge list of course options that were available at UNIC. I finally chose Cyprus after I began researching the country. Escaping the bone-chilling Pennsylvania weather in exchange for a Mediterranean paradise seemed too good to be true , and the crystal clear water and pristine beaches sealed the deal for me. Texting friends back home from the beach while they were shoveling snow was the cherry on top!

Why was the experience awesome? My favorite part about studying abroad, and specifically about studying abroad in Cyprus, was the ease of meeting new people from all over the world. Because the university teaches almost completely in English , I took my classes not just with other Americans , but also with full - time Cypriot and international students , as well as European study abroad students. Because of that, I was able to meet tons of students from all over the world. It was awesome : one day I was playing soccer with local students, and the next , I was celebrating Carnival with some of the European students I met. Coming from a small town , this is something that I could never of imagined prior to studying abroad.

Why would you recommend study abroad and this program to others? As an advisor , it is almost comical how many students come to the same conclusion at the end of the program. "Why don't more Americans study abroad in Cyprus?" The answer , I believe , is that although Cyprus is known for its awesomeness throughout Europe, I think it is far enough away from the U.S. that it falls off American radar s most of the time , w hich is unfortunate because Cyprus and UNIC have so many amazing qualities: tons of courses, internships, English - speaking, friendly people. beaches, beaches and more top ranked beaches, and so much sun! The awesomeness goes on and on, and I could fill a small book (or information packet) with this info , but someone else is already doing that!

How has studying abroad impacted your life so far? Studying abroad has impacted my life in a supe r-obvious way thus far : I work in the international education field! More specifically, I work for The University of Nicosia! Beyond that, the experience helped me mature and become much more of an independent person, and I certainly needed that.

What are you up to now? See the question above. I have been working for the University for almost 4 years now getting students excited and prepared to study abroad in the sunniest country in Europe! FEATURED Edward Giard Clemson University ALUMNI STORIES Summer in Cyprus with Mediterranean Trip, 2017

What made you decide to study abroad? Studying abroad was an extremely last-minute decision of mine. I found out about this program 3 days before the deadline and traveled here with my Communications Professor from Clemson University. Was definitely a once in a lifetime experience!

Why did you pick UNIC and Cyprus? Cyprus sounded beautiful, we knew it was safe, and I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to see all of the Greek islands, Rome, and all across Cyprus in just one summer [through the Mediterranean Trip during the Summer in Cyprus program].

Why was the experience awesome? First of all, everyone in Cyprus was extremely welcoming. I know that sometimes locals in some countries don’t like study abroad students, but it almost seemed as though everybody was even more welcoming towards us because we were from abroad. People wanted us to experience their culture and leave with a positive mindset.

Why would you recommend study abroad and this program to others? It was an unbelievable experience. We were never bored! Whether it was trying new food, cliff jumping, or even hanging out with our professors, it was an experience I won’t ever forget.

How has studying abroad impacted your life so far? Studying abroad has truly made me realize how big the world is. Just traveling to different countries within Europe is extremely eye opening from both a social and cultural perspective.

What are you up to now? I’m currently a Sophomore at Clemson University majoring in Business management with an emphasis in entrepreneurship and minor in communications. As of now, I am making videos and helping with marketing strategies for the University itself, along with starting a start-up company with a couple of buddies. Our company (Kanga) invented a cooler (Kase Mate) for an entire case of beverages and we are currently raising money to make a down payment on our manufacturing overseas. Along with that, a couple friends and I, who I met on a weekend excursion, all developed a campaign team for student body President and VP, and just recently won. So within Clemson’s Student Government, I look forward to pursuing marketing strategies to completely change the way Clemson is viewed from an outsider’s perspective.

What are your future plans? As a current sophomore, I am looking to finish my degree at Clemson University, and to start several other start-up companies along the way. I also look to continue pursuing a career in videography and marketing, as I’ve been assigned the task of Semester in Cyprus Students on the Europe Trip creating a documentary about Clemson University. Why would you recommend study abroad and this Johnna Metcalf program to others? Illinois State University I believe that everyone should study abroad at some Semester in Cyprus, Spring 2017 point in their college career because you really do learn so much about yourself. As I mentioned before, I found this amazing confidence in myself that I never really had before. The professors at UNIC are SO amazing. They allow you to follow your own path of learning, and encourage you to think in your own way and perform at your own ability. They will give you TONS of responsibly (thank you Mr. George and Miss Yianna!) and let you run with it. I cannot talk highly enough about the program, professors, and administrators. Attending such a diverse university allowed me to open my eyes (and mind) to different ways of life. By surrounding yourself with different people and immersing yourself in a new culture, you start to pick up on different ways of thinking, of life. It’s truly an incredible experience.

How has studying abroad impacted your life so far? It’s been a year since I’ve studied abroad in Nicosia, Cyprus. I miss it every single day. A day has not gone by where I have not brought up my study abroad experience to someone. Whether it was talking about the amazing food we had, or the weather, or the scenery, I bring up Cyprus in every conversation I have. To this day, I still don’t understand how more people don’t know about this amazing country. Studying abroad has opened my mind to new ways of thinking, allowing more people into my circle, and making me more confident and independent. I don’t know where I would be, or who I would be for that matter, today if I did not take the crazy leap to study abroad. What made you decide to study abroad? What are you up to now? I chose to study abroad because I wanted to experience something new. I’ve always been a homebody, I love my hometown and my friends and family, but I wanted to prove to myself that I was strong enough to live on my own in a new place. Honestly, My life is pretty boring back in the States—there hasn’t been much time for traveling or exploring, or eating fun, new food, or I was searching for myself. By studying abroad, I found this new part of myself that I never knew existed. I found a whole new dancing. But it’s been great! I’m a senior in college, graduating in May 2019 (I am a year behind) with two bachelor of science world of independence, confidence, and I owe it all to Cyprus! degrees: one in Recreation Management and one in Organizational Leadership. This was my first time across the Atlantic, and now I can’t wait to go back. Studying abroad has helped me gain an appreciation for other cultures and ignited my inner travel bug. As of right now, I’m finishing up my third year of undergrad and preparing to apply to vet school. I’ll be graduating in the fall and taking a semester off before the next chapter of my life begins. I highly recommend anyone looking to step outside their comfort zone to study abroad. It changed me, and it will change you too! Why would you recommend study abroad and this Jake Onarheim program to others? Illinois State University I would recommend studying abroad to quite literally Semester in Cyprus, Fall 2017 anyone because it is a chance to gain experience that nothing else could ever offer. If there is ever an opportunity for you to study abroad, I would recommend taking it in a heartbeat. I would recommend UNIC in Cyprus because it allows for such a unique experience compared to other countries due to the climate on the island as well as all the great people working there that really make you feel comfortable getting situated. However, if I had to give one piece of advice to any student considering studying abroad I would say just be ready to go with the flow, there will be some things that seem weird or confusing but having an open mind going into it will make everything a little better.

How has studying abroad impacted your life so far? Studying abroad has impacted my life in several ways. It was my first time out of the country and may have well have been my first time out of Illinois, with how little I traveled prior to my study abroad experience. The key phrase here is ‘prior to’, because going abroad has sparked my desire to see and do as much as I can. I recently went on a road trip to Colorado for skiing and hiking, and I have an East Coast trip planned in the summer as well as a trip to later down the line, all plans that would more than likely not have been made if it were not for studying abroad. Traveling almost halfway around the world showed me how accessible things truly could be if you just get up and go. I also feel a little older after studying abroad due to the added responsibilities I had to take on, like having to prepare or find food for every meal, and just taking care What made you decide to study abroad? of myself in general while being outside my home country. I’ve always wanted to study abroad when I was younger, and so when it came time to finally make that dream a reality, What are you up to now? I did just that. Right now, I am currently a sophomore at Illinois State University, going for my bachelor’s degree in risk management Why did you pick UNIC and Cyprus? and insurance. While I knew that I wanted to study abroad, I never had a specific destination in mind. I wanted to find a unique place that What are your future plans? would also allow me to finish up my general education credits at my home university. And so, the University of Nicosia in Cyprus As for the future, I have many things I would like to have accomplished at certain points in my life but nothing too was the perfect choice because it fit both my requirements while also offering much more than I could have ever expected. concrete and set to a schedule other than an internship next summer and earning my bachelor’s degree in RMI. I Why was the experience awesome? suppose the general agenda other than those things would be to get out and see as much as I possibly can while I am Now this question is kind of hard to answer because there are so many reasons why my experience abroad was awesome and still able to, because I’ve learned that life’s all about the new experiences and memories you make along the way. exciting throughout. I guess a good place to start would be mentioning Cyprus’s location; perfectly placed between the continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa, its location allowed for me to travel even further than Cyprus. And man did that allow me to experience a lot: such as traveling through the Holy Lands of , making a childhood dream come true with my trip to Greece, and hiking the Transylvanian wilderness in central . And that’s not to mention the endless memories I made in the country I called my home for three months. But what it comes down to and what really made my experience abroad so memorable were the people I met; the countless locals I got to interact with in the countries I visited, and the group of sixty American students that were a part of the same program I was in, truly made the trip for me - we became family very quickly.
