    Football in France Global Sport Cultures Eds Gary Armstrong, Brunel University, Richard Giulianotti, University of Aberdeen, and David Andrews, The University of Maryland From the Olympics and the World Cup to extreme sports and kabaddi, the social significance of sport at both global and local levels has become increasingly clear in recent years. The contested nature of identity is widely addressed in the social sciences, but sport as a particularly revealing site of such contestation, in both industrialising and post-industrial nations, has been less fruitfully explored. Further, sport and sporting corporations are increasingly powerful players in the world economy. Sport is now central to the social and technological development of mass media, notably in telecommunications and digital television. It is also a crucial medium through which specific populations and political elites communicate and interact with each other on a global stage. Berg publishers are pleased to announce a new book series that will examine and evaluate the role of sport in the contemporary world. Truly global in scope, the series seeks to adopt a grounded, constructively critical stance towards prior work within sport studies and to answer such questions as: • How are sports experienced and practised at the everyday level within local settings? • How do specific cultures construct and negotiate forms of social stratification (such as gender, class, ethnicity) within sporting contexts? • What is the impact of mediation and corporate globalisation upon local sports cultures? Politique, culture, société, n° 23, mai-août 2014 [en ligne, www.histoire-politique.fr] Sport and Political Leaders in the Arab World Mahfoud Amara Regimes and political leaders in the Arab World have invested in sport, at different degrees, mainly for the purpose of populace mobilisation around the one party-state’s ideology and around the figure of the Zaim, the so-called father of the nation or the nation’s architect. Hundreds of photos, covers of newspapers and magazines, can be retrieved from the archives displaying current and former Arab Presidents and Kings presenting trophies to national football teams and domestic clubs, offering awards to Olympic medallists, and honorary titles to national sporting figures. Sport was incorporated, and still, in the political affairs of countries in the Arab World either to strengthen the legitimacy of ruling parties and royal families, or nowadays to delegitimise the ousted regimes following “the Arab spring”. Political leaders are also using sport as an opportunity for place branding and positioning of their country in the world’s map. This is evidenced today in the Arabian Peninsula. This article of course is not meant to be exhaustive to all Arab countries and historical epochs. The main idea is to provide an account of the general trend in relation to types of intervention of political leaders and rulers in sport in the Arab World, particularly with regards to nation-state building, diplomacy, and business of sport. Harknett, Ph.D ABSTRACT This dissertation contributes to the growing literature about globalization’s impact on local institutions with a focus on the interaction between global and local forces. Specifically, the dissertation examines the two theories of glocalization and grobalization that offer contrasting explanations about the impact of globalization on local institutions. While the theory of glocalization stresses the interpenetration of the global and the local resulting in increasing hybridization, grobalization predicts that globalization overwhelms local institutions resulting in increasing homogeneity. The research reveals that while both theories tested capture to some degree institutional dynamics, they ultimately overlook the enduring power of the local. Put differently, the study finds that globalization’s effects are not pre-determined and impact local institutions differently based on the local-societal setting and the local institutional capacity to withstand unifying pressures. As a corrective, my study introduces a third conceptual frame for understanding the global-local relationship that I term ‘localism anew’, which holds that local entities can be the driving force in transforming globalization by leveraging the local in order to succeed globally – something which grobalization cannot conceive and which glocalization overlooks.

Ireland T: 02890366416 E: [email protected] 2 Politics, Resistance and Patronage: The African Boycott of the 1966 World Cup and its Ramifications Abstract The 1966 World Cup Finals are remembered primarily for on-field events, not least the host’s capture of the Jules Rimet trophy, the performances of the minnows of North Korea in reaching the quarter-finals and the Eusebio inspired exploits of the tournament’s other debutants, Portugal. What is less prominent in this history but more significant in impacting the longer-term trajectory of the World Cup and the global game, are events off the field of play, specifically the decision of African nations to boycott the qualifying rounds of the tournament. This paper assesses the circumstances behind this boycott, both within FIFA and in the highly charged political climate that characterized the immediate post-colonial era. Particular attention is paid to the role of Ghana as the boycott’s chief architect. Thereafter, I explore some of the intended and unintended consequences of the boycott, including its contribution to an ongoing transformation in the global governance of football.     The Seduction of Football Youth and Sport for Development and Peace in Post-Conflict Liberia A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Holly Lindsay Collison School of Social Sciences Brunel University October 2013 Abstract This thesis considers Liberian youth and the concept of Sport for Development and Peace (SDP). Since the early 2000s the notion of SDP has been strongly advocated, accepted and inserted into UN led policies and intervention strategies for uniting societies divided by violent conflict. Whilst little has been done to monitor and evaluate such programmes the notion has grown at an unprecedented pace and has been adopted by the development and humanitarian industry with real vigour. In many ways football has become the face of development in post-conflict societies. However, this fashionable intervention remains a development assumption rather than a tested method of programming. Liberia is a post-conflict society with a large youth population, an active large UN peacekeeping force and a long footballing heritage with a plethora of local NGO’s using SDP initiatives. My intention in this thesis is to question the assumptions of SDP advocates as they are applied in Liberia, in order to provide a better understanding of the social effects of football for Liberia’s youth population. I pursue this goal through an ethnography of one Liberian youth football team, Zatti FC, the community from which the players are drawn and the Catholic youth centre where they play. This thesis is significant as, despite its popularity, SDP has rarely been subjected to academic scrutiny, especially using the detailed qualitative methods I apply here.

    Introduction The Language of Happiness In 1953, at the age of seventeen, Smaïl Zidane left his village in the French colony of Algeria, heading north. He traveled to Paris, where he found a job at a construction site in Saint-Denis, a suburb famous for an abbey church that houses the tombs of generations of French kings. Unable to find lodging, he spent the winter nights on the ground near where he worked. He remembers the day he received his first paycheck: “I experienced the first real happiness I had since arriving in France. That day, I didn’t feel the cold anymore.” He sent most of his earnings back home to his parents. Soon he met other men from his village, and together they rented a small room in Saint-Denis. They were among hundreds of thousands of colonial workers who helped rebuild France in the wake of World War II.1 A year after Smaïl left home, a bloody anticolonial uprising began in Algeria. A political organization called the Front de Libération Nationale (F.L.N.) launched a series of attacks in Algiers. In 1955 the French declared martial law, rounding up thousands of men and using torture to crush the insurrection. Many Algerian laborers in metropolitan France supported the F.L.N., which soon instituted a “revolutionary tax,” collected by its opera- tives in the shantytowns where the workers lived. In 1958 a group of well- known professional football players from Algeria sneaked out of France and gathered in Tunisia to create an F.L.N. football team.
