Literature of the sixties, seventies and eighties - V. Albanian literature in Kosovo - VI. Perspectives for the future - VII. Chronology of modern Albanian literature 1. The historical background Being at the crossroads between various spheres of culture has never been a gain to the Albanians as one might have expected. An Albanian national culture and literature1 was late to develop and had enormous difficulty asserting itself between the Catholic Latin civilization of the Adriatic coast, the venerable Orthodox traditions of the Greeks, Serbs and Bulgarians and the sophisticated Islamic culture of the Ottoman Empire. First non-literary traces of written Albanian are known from the 15th century, e. g. Bishop Paulus ’ baptismal formula of November 8, 1462. Beginning with the Missal (Meshari) of Gjon Buzuku2 in 1555, the early Albanian literature of the 16th and 17th century with its primarily religious focus might have provided a foundation for literary creativity in the age of the Counter- Reformation under the somewhat ambiguous patronage of the Catholic Church, had not the banners of Islam soon been unfurled on the eastern horizons. The Ottoman colonization of Albania, which had begun as early as 1385, was to split the Albanians definitively into three spheres of culture, all virtually independent of one another: 1) the cosmopolitan traditions of the Islamic Orient using initially

Research & Assessment Branch Balkans Series The Greek Minority in Albania – Current Tensions Miranda Vickers 10/02 The Greek Minority in Albania – Current Tensions Miranda Vickers Key Findings • The problems of the Greek minority in Albania continue to affect the wider relationship between Albania and Greece. • Efforts to improve the situation and human rights of the minority have met with delays and difficulties as both past and present Albanian and Greek governments have been willing to use nationalism as political capital for electoral benefits. • External manipulation of the minorities’ issues by nationalist-based groups has hindered efforts to correctly evaluate the minority situation and contributed to inter- ethnic tensions. • The election of a new government in Greece may offer an opportunity to attempt to solve some of these problems and improve regional relationships. i Contents Introduction 1 Historical Background 2 The Greek Minority in Post–Communist Albania 3 The Church 4 Himara 5 Recent Developments 5 Education 8 Conclusion 8 Bibliography 11 ii The Greek Minority in Albania – Current Tensions Miranda Vickers Introduction Upon arriving in the Albanian capital Tirana, a visitor would be mistaken for thinking that at least half the city’s population was Christian Orthodox. The enormous new Orthodox church currently under construction in the centre of the city dwarfs all surrounding buildings and gives the impression that Orthodoxy is by far the largest representative religion, there being another fair sized Orthodox church nearby. In contrast, the Roman Catholic cathedral also in the city centre looks small by comparison, and unlike some other Albanian cities, Tirana does not have a large mosque, only several small mosques dotted throughout the city.

“Literature led me to freedom, not the other way round” ISMAIL KADARE DESPITE being a small country, with its language - one of the oldest and rarest - with its ancient Illyrian culture, and among the constant chaos and turmoil of history, Albania has created an original literature with outstanding figures, such as Ismail Kadare. The epochal changes that followed 1990 brought to Albanian literature a new generation of writers whose work is being introduced across the borders, among which: Bashkim Shehu, Luljeta Lleshanaku, Agron Tufa, Parid Teferici, Rudi Erebara, Idlir Azizaj, Arian Leka, Romeo Çollaku, Virion Graci, etc. The Ministry of Culture, as the main institution that compiles and implements book policies in Albania, as well as supports and promotes Albanian literature abroad, is bringing to this Fair the creative work of this generation of writers, aiming to create a space for international dialogue that respects creative and cultural diversity. This year we celebrate also the 10-th anniversary of TRADUKI, the European translation network where Albania has been part since 2014, which is a common cultural space with 10 languages, 11 participating countries and 17 supporting institutions. The Federal Foreign Minister of Germany Mr. Sigmar Gabriel, the Minister of Culture of Albania Mrs. Mirela Kumbaro Furxhi, and the writer Mr. Christoph Ransmayr will greet one of the most successful initiatives of the cultural cooperation among European countries. The Albanian stand, where the traditional meets the modern, is conceived as a place of promotion and discussion of important topics in contemporary Albanian literature, including memory, confronting the dictatorial past, the society’s adaptation to radical historical changes, emigration, coexistence, integration, etc.
