The focus of the paper is to explore the development of an empowered franchise framework as part of England Netball's elite performance strategy and the consequences of the Superleague for player performance, team success, and commercial potential of the franchises. The findings from 22 in-depth interviews conducted between 2008-2011 with franchise personnel and sport media/marketing consultants inform the discussion. The paper further comments on the implications of the empowered franchise system for developing NGB elite performance strategies. Introduction Emerging in the late 19th century as a sport “initially designed and traditionally administered as an activity for promoting appropriate forms of femininity” (Tagg, 2008, p 410), Netball is played by more than 20 million people in over 80 nations across the globe (INFA, 2011). It is an invasion ball game predominantly played by girls and women between teams of 7 players.

  • A Brief History of Netball and Our Tactix Legacy
A Brief History of Netball and our Tactix Legacy What is Netball? “A new game for girls, about which a good deal will probably be heard in the course of the ensuing summer, is basket-ball. It has already swept the United States, completely eclipsing lawn tennis, and effectually nipping in the bud the threatened revival of croquet….The chief beauty of the game is its simplicity, and the fact that no expensive apparatus is required. Wherever two old baskets, a couple of clothes props, and a ball, are there can it be played.” (Otago Witness, 6 May 1897) The Game The game of netball is derived from the early development of basketball in the USA. The origin of basketball is traditionally credited to James Naismith, a 30-year-old Canadian immigrant to the USA, who in 1891, invented an indoor game for young men at the School for Christian Workers (later the YMCA) in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first games of what's now netball were played on a paddock between nine-a-side teams. The rules allowed three bounces, and throws from one end of the field to the other. Baskets were used for goals and after each goal, the ball was tipped out to restart play. Netball was first played in the UK in 1895 at Madame Ostenburg's College. In the first half of the 20th century, Netball's popularity continued to grow, with the game being played in many British Commonwealth countries. There were no standard rules at that time with both nine-a-side and five- a-side versions of the game.

  • BBG Bulletin Issue
ISSUE 110 13th September 2019 The time had arrived for Year 7 to begin their Resilience Camp adventure. Although the weather was not the best when we arrived at school on Wednesday morning our spirits were high, and despite a few nerves about staying away from home students were excited to get going. Carrying all their belongings students boarded the walking bus and began their journey from BBG to Fanwoods. On completing the first challenge and arriving at camp the skies were dry and students were very excited and ready for their second challenge of putting up their tents and creating a home for the next three days. They followed instructions perfectly and embraced the challenge of putting up their tent and in no time our location had gone from an empty field to a little camping community. Although things did not go smoothly for some groups, all students persevered, demonstrating great Cognitive Resilience. Students were incredibly supportive of each other, not only working effectively as a tent group but also offering a helping hand to those that were struggling once their tents were up. Great friendships were already starting to blossom. Students were divided in to 17 groups, in which they completed a combination of the following activities; axe throwing, rifle shooting, bouldering, team building, grass sledging, archery tag, indoor cave, low ropes, night line, crate stacking, archery and photo orienteering. Each one designed to challenge students in various ways, allowing them to make new friends and find out new things about themselves. Throughout the activities students demonstrated real team spirit, from supporting those who were struggling to celebrating with each other when success was achieved.
