JAMAICA v ENGLAND JANUARY 2015 TEST SERIES A devastating result for England who went down 2-1 in the recent Test Series in Kingston, Jamaica. Words cannot describe the disappointment of the 10 goal defeat in the third match of the series. England lost the first match 47-56 and we could have put that down to jetlag etc., but came fighting back to win the second match 55-47. Reports in Jamaica and England suggested that these matches were very physical and hard fought. But with England winning the second match, hopes were set very high for them taking the series, especially in this year of the World Netball Cup in Sydney in August. I think we all thought that it would be a very closely contested match, with only one or two goals separating them at the final whistle, but we never dreamt that England would lose, and lose by such a wide margin of 47-57. Having started the 4th quarter at 37 all, Jamaica scored 20 goals and England only 10. We were pleased to see that Cookey was back on court for the final test match after having received an injury in the 2nd test, but there was no mention as to why Geva Mentor, (recently voted the best netballer in the world in 2014) was substituted at half time – we can only assume she had suffered an injury? This victory was sweet revenge for the Jamaicans, who were thrashed 3- 0 by England in the 2014 test series in England. Shooting Stats : Jamaica 78% Jhaniele Fowler 28 / 34 82% Romelda Aiken 15 / 19 79% Shanice Beckford 14 / 20 70% England 84% Jo Harten 35 / 38 92% Pamela Cookey 10 / 15 66% Sasha Corbin 2 / 3 66% IS THIS THE ANSWER TO JAMAICA’S SUCCESS ? Jill McIntosh, Australia’s National Coach for nine years, who led her players to World Championship and Commonwealth Games Gold Medals, now sits on the Jamaican bench! .

  • BBG Bulletin Issue
ISSUE 110 13th September 2019 The time had arrived for Year 7 to begin their Resilience Camp adventure. Although the weather was not the best when we arrived at school on Wednesday morning our spirits were high, and despite a few nerves about staying away from home students were excited to get going. Carrying all their belongings students boarded the walking bus and began their journey from BBG to Fanwoods. On completing the first challenge and arriving at camp the skies were dry and students were very excited and ready for their second challenge of putting up their tents and creating a home for the next three days. They followed instructions perfectly and embraced the challenge of putting up their tent and in no time our location had gone from an empty field to a little camping community. Although things did not go smoothly for some groups, all students persevered, demonstrating great Cognitive Resilience. Students were incredibly supportive of each other, not only working effectively as a tent group but also offering a helping hand to those that were struggling once their tents were up. Great friendships were already starting to blossom. Students were divided in to 17 groups, in which they completed a combination of the following activities; axe throwing, rifle shooting, bouldering, team building, grass sledging, archery tag, indoor cave, low ropes, night line, crate stacking, archery and photo orienteering. Each one designed to challenge students in various ways, allowing them to make new friends and find out new things about themselves. Throughout the activities students demonstrated real team spirit, from supporting those who were struggling to celebrating with each other when success was achieved.

Your FREE Local Ph 07 4666 3128 - E-Mail [email protected] - Web www.alloraadvertiser.com THURSDAY, 4th AUGUST 2016 Allora Sports Museum Proud of Laura Geitz Should the people fo Allora associate themselves with a serial heartbreaker? Of course we should! We love her and are very, very proud of her. Last year Laura Geitz and her champion Firebirds team broke the hearts of the N.S.W. fans when the Swifts were defeated by 1 point by the firebirds in the ANZ Netball Championship Grand Final. Last Sunday, not only did she re-break their hearts, but ripped them out of their chests without mercy. The coronary inducing double extra time final showed why these girls are deserving of back to back premierships. The Swifts arrived at Boondall with an unbeatable match plan with Swifts G.K. Sharni Layton (she must be the netball equivalent of NRL heckler Michael Ennis) primed to upset the long Jamaican shooter Romelda Aiken. However, they didn’t OK this match plan with Geitz! In typical Laura style, she was humble in accepting the trophy, taking no individual credit and instead praising her very talented team. We are very proud that Laura is the face of the Allora Regional Sports Museum and wish her all the best in 2017, whether she continues playing or enjoys retirement.

ALL ENGLAND NETBALL ASSOCIATION A History of Netball in England Through the Ages - To Present Day England Netball, Sports Park, 3 Oakwood Drive, Loughborough, Leicestershire. LE11 3QF www.ournetballhistory.org.uk EARLY BEGININGS 1891 Game invented in USA by a YMCA Secretary, where it was then, and is now, called Basketball. First match recorded in America1900 (Boston) 1895 Visit of Dr Justin Toles, an American, to Madam Österberg’s Physical Training College (then at Hampstead). Students were taught Basket Ball - indoors – there were no printed rules - no lines, circles or boundaries. The goals were two waste paper baskets hung on walls at each end of the hall. Within Madame Bergman Österberg’s Report, dated 1895 the following was recorded : Basket Ball is an American game introduced into our College by Dr Toles ; its aim is to get the ball into the opponents’ basket or goal, the basket being placed at a height of about seven or eight feet. The play is entirely with the hands, and no player is allowed to hold the ball for more than 5 seconds. It is a good winter game and can be played by any number. We played a few games in the gymnasium under Dr Toles’ supervision. 1897 Game played out of doors on grass. An American lady paid a visit to the College (who moved to Dartford), and taught the game as then played by women in America. The students at Dartford introduced rings instead of baskets, the large ball and the division of the ground into three courts. After completing the physical training course, graduates of the college were virtually guaranteed employment in girls’ schools throughout the country, with an ample yearly salary of £100! 1900 The newly formed Ling Association (now the Physical Education Association) set up a sub-committee 1901 to revise and publish the first set of rules, 250 copies were published and many changes were adopted.
