The Firebirds, who’ve been such huge rivals of the Swifts since the National Netball League started in 1997, really look like they’re going places again. When we met earlier this year they were looking for a first win of the season - and if not for STAY UP TO DATE a strong fourth quarter from us they could’ve taken nswswifts.com.au the points. Since then they’ve registered good wins and are eyeing a playoff charge of their own. It may be a home game for us but the Firebirds will have big support in Brisbane and we’ll have to be on top of our game. THIS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CHARITY; WHOSE TEAM WILL YOU BE ON? 4 REVIEW Round 9 Recap The NSW Swifts bounced back from their loss to the Melbourne Vixens with a 69-54 Round 9 win over the Collingwood Magpies at Brisbane's Nissan Arena. Despite being without Helen Housby, who sat the game out with a calf complaint, the Premiers had too much for the valiant Magpies who faded in the last quarter. The Swifts generated three turnover possessions in the opening stages with Sarah Klau to the fore in defence. They converted two of them to take an 11-7 lead before Collingwood called their first timeout. A Jodi-Ann Ward intercept could've had the Magpies right on the Swifts' heels but they failed to convert and Sam Wallace and Sophie Garbin were quick to punish them. The Magpies lost possession on the opening centre pass of the second quarter and Wallace extended the Swifts' advantage. Akle made some changes to her side, bringing on Kelly Singleton at goal attack and giving Garbin a rest. The Swifts' lead grew to 10 goals before the quarter's Rebel Power Play but three Super Shots from Gabi Sinclair and Nyah Allen had the Pies back within six. Akle called a timeout and it had the desired effect as Paige Hadley calmed things in the midcourt and Garbin finished the quarter with a Super Shot to send the Swifts to the sheds nine goals ahead. The Magpies were more clinical in their play in the second half with Emma Ryde a good target for her feeders. While Collingwood were growing into the game the Swifts suddenly looked flustered and rushed in attack. Garbin missed a number of attempts and Geva Mentor was wreaking havoc as the Pies won the quarter 15-12 and went to the final break only six goals down. But Klau, Lauren Moore and Maddy Turner upped their defensive intensity, destroying any hope Collingwood had of reeling the Swifts in. After Garbin took a knock she was replaced by Singleton who, with Wallace, finished with a flurry of Super Shots to put some gloss on the scoreline. 5 LADDER Ladder leading into Round 10 T P W D L GF GA % TOTAL Melbourne Vixens 9 8 0 1 568 480 118.33 32 NSW Swifts 9 7 0 2 574 535 107.29 28 Sunshine Coast Lightning 9 6 0 3 510 509 100.2 24 West Coast Fever 9 5 0 4 615 581 105.85 20 FINALS GIANTS Netball 9 3 1 5 551 564 97.7 14 Adelaide Thunderbirds 9 3 0 6 477 503 94.83 12 Queensland Firebirds 9 2 1 6 517 574 90.07 10 Collingwood Magpies 9 1 0 8 494 560 88.21 4 6 2020 ROSTER Your NSW Swifts VICE CAPTAIN Sophie Craig Sophie Garbin Paige Hadley Nat HaythornthwaitE Helen Housby C/WD GS/GA C/WA/WD WA/GA GA/GS 16/5/93 177cm 6/4/97 184cm 26/8/92 173cm 9/12/92 174cm 19/1/95 183cm @sophiebear135 @sophiegarbin @paigeyhadley @natsymone @helenhousby1 CAPTAIN LEADERSHIP GROUP Sarah Klau Lauren Moore Maddy Proud Maddy Turner Sam Wallace GK/GD GD/GK/WD C/WA GD/WD GS 30/9/94 190cm 30/1/98 184cm 4/12/93 174cm 17/12/95 183cm 16/1/94 193cm @sarahklau @loz_mooore @maddyproud @maddyturnerr @tallsamsam4 Extended Squad Briony Akle Anita Keelan Tayla Fraser Leilani Kelly Nic Styles Head Coach Assistant Coach Rohweder singleton 7 OPPOSITION Queensland Firebirds ROMELDA AIKEN MAHALIA CASSIDY LARA DUNKLEY RUDI ELLIS MACY GARDNER GS C/WA WA/C/WD GK/GD C/WA 19/11/88 196cm 9/10/95 173cm 31/5/95 180cm 13/8/97 191cm 7/6/00 173cm CAPTAIN TARA HINCHLIFFE KIM JENNER jemma MI MI GABI SIMPSON INE-MARI VENTER GD/GK GD/GK C/WD/WA WD GS/GA 25/5/98 185cm 27/2/98 184cm 4/3/96 176cm 17/10/92 176cm 21/4/95 192cm EXTENDED SQUAD Roselee Jencke Tippah Dwan Mia Stower Head Coach 8 FEATURE Coach content, but looking for more few months back, if you’d have it has its challenges with home schooling and offered Briony Akle second place keeping them entertained but my husband has on the Suncorp Super Netball been amazing and the boys have been brilliant ladder with nine rounds played with making the most of what’s on offer up here she’d have taken it. on the Sunshine Coast.” AAs the defending Premiers, the NSW Swifts Former Swift and current Magpie Ash Brazill have had a target on their backs this year but called Akle one of her netball heroes a few sitting just behind the pace-setting Melbourne weeks ago. SCHOOL SPORT AUSTRALIA 12 & U and 15 & U NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY The championships had their origins in the Australian State Schools' Basketball Association developed originally for primary schools and played predominately on grass. Interstate carnivals commenced in 1923 and continued in 1924 when a number of exchanges between individual states occurred. In 1924 visiting teachers from Victoria, Queensland and South Australia to New South Wales made exhaustive inquiries into the question of girls’ games with the view to inaugurating interstate contests. In 1925 South Australia hosted New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland in both a junior and senior competition, one of the games attracted over 2000 spectators. South Australia was victorious in the junior section and South Australia and Victoria both finished in first place in the senior. This competition continued in 1926 in New South Wales and 1927 in Victoria. With the introduction of a perpetual trophy the first officially recognised Australian State Schoolgirls Basketball (Netball) Championship was played at the Practising School, Brisbane in 1928. The final, on the afternoon of the August 22nd, was before a large crowd. Victoria convincingly beat NSW 23 goals to 4 goals. Mr John Donald Howie donated the perpetual trophy following the win of Victoria. Mr Howie was a Victorian Councillor from 1922 – 1932 and Mayor of Camberwell in 1927 and 1928. Australian schoolgirls tournaments were organised to combine both a netball competition and an educational tour, When girls weren’t playing they attended lessons at the local school or made educational day trips. In Brisbane the girls visited Toowoomba, the Olympic Tyre and Rubber Works in Geebung and took a trip to the South Coast of Queensland.
