SCHOOL SPORT AUSTRALIA 12 & U and 15 & U NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY The championships had their origins in the Australian State Schools' Basketball Association developed originally for primary schools and played predominately on grass. Interstate carnivals commenced in 1923 and continued in 1924 when a number of exchanges between individual states occurred. In 1924 visiting teachers from Victoria, Queensland and South Australia to New South Wales made exhaustive inquiries into the question of girls’ games with the view to inaugurating interstate contests. In 1925 South Australia hosted New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland in both a junior and senior competition, one of the games attracted over 2000 spectators. South Australia was victorious in the junior section and South Australia and Victoria both finished in first place in the senior. This competition continued in 1926 in New South Wales and 1927 in Victoria. With the introduction of a perpetual trophy the first officially recognised Australian State Schoolgirls Basketball (Netball) Championship was played at the Practising School, Brisbane in 1928. The final, on the afternoon of the August 22nd, was before a large crowd. Victoria convincingly beat NSW 23 goals to 4 goals. Mr John Donald Howie donated the perpetual trophy following the win of Victoria. Mr Howie was a Victorian Councillor from 1922 – 1932 and Mayor of Camberwell in 1927 and 1928. Australian schoolgirls tournaments were organised to combine both a netball competition and an educational tour, When girls weren’t playing they attended lessons at the local school or made educational day trips. In Brisbane the girls visited Toowoomba, the Olympic Tyre and Rubber Works in Geebung and took a trip to the South Coast of Queensland.

  • Victorian and ACT Electoral Boundary Redistribution
Barton Deakin Brief: Victorian and ACT Electoral Boundary Redistribution 9 April 2018 Last week, the Australian Electoral Commission (‘AEC’) announced substantial redistributions for the Electorate Divisions in Victoria and the ACT. The redistribution creates a third Federal seat in the ACT and an additional seat in Victoria. These new seats are accompanied by substantial boundary changes in Victoria and the ACT. ABC electoral analyst Antony Green has predicted that the redistribution would notionally give the Australian Labor Party an additional three seats in the next election – the Divisions of Dunkley, Fraser, and Bean – while the seat of Corangamite would become one of the most marginal seats in the country. The proposed changes will now be subject to a consultation period where objections to the changes may be submitted to the AEC. The objection period closes at 6pm May 4 in both the ACT and Victoria. A proposed redistribution for South Australia will be announced on April 13. This Barton Deakin Brief will summarize the key electoral boundary changes in the ACT and Victoria. New Seats The Redistribution Committee has proposed that four of Victoria’s electoral divisions be renamed. Additionally, two new seats are to be created in Victoria and the ACT New Seats Proposed for Victoria and ACT DIVISION OF BEAN (ACT) New seat encompassing much of the former Division of Canberra. The seat will be named after World War I war correspondent Charles Edwin Woodrow Green (1879-1968) DIVISION OF FRASER (VIC) New seat named after former Liberal Party Prime Minister John Malcolm Fraser AC CH GCL (1930-2015), to be located in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

  • Mr Stephen Palethorpe Committee Secretary Senate Environment and Communications Reference Committee Sent Via Email: [email protected]
26 September 2011 Attention: Mr Stephen Palethorpe Committee Secretary Senate Environment and Communications Reference Committee Sent via email: [email protected] Dear Sir, RE: Inquiry into recent ABC programming decisions As one of two regional representative teams in the Victorian Football League, we are aware of the Inquiry into recent ABC programming decision and our submission is made both as support to the AFL and the AFL Victoria submissions. Our Club’s submission however specifically reflects the views from a Victorian Regional City perspective. We would particularly like to address point (e) in the terms of reference which states: “the future potential implications of these cuts on ABC television’s capacity to broadcast State League football and rugby”. The North Ballarat Football Club have real concerns that the ABC may elect to cease covering State League level competition matches around Australia and, in particular, no longer broadcast Victorian Football League (VFL) matches. It is not only the importance of this coverage to our sport and our club that would be hurt; it is also the exposure and promotion of regional Victoria that would be disadvantaged by any such decision. We believe the ABC provides a vital link and service to the numerous football followers in our region and brings a localised representation on a state wide and national basis. The North Ballarat Football Club provides the talented player pathway program for the talented youth from a region expanding from Ballarat, South to Warrnambool, West to Hamilton and North West to Horsham and the Wimmera and is an essential sporting program that allows for regional players to progress to the VFL and AFL levels.
