Amen The Revd. Roy Shaw writes......................... You are the answer, in some way, to someone’s prayer. I knew this to be true in a theoretical sense, but it came home to me in a real and heartfelt way while I was out in Kenya last month. The story starts last November; in a casual conversation with Bishop Joseph under the banana trees by his house in Siyombe , we talked about the difference a bicycle can make to a day’s work in an African setting. The bishop got more excited as he thought about it. I registered this, and no more was said. Unknown to me, the bishop and his senior staff began praying about bicycles, and wrote them into their development plan. They would need eight for phase 1, to help the priests in their most scattered parishes get around to visit their parishioners.( None of the priests are paid, so it’s not as if they can save out of their stipend for a bike). The prayers continued. As I planned my visit for this spring, I asked our church members if they would give gifts of money, for bikes, and for Swahili bibles, so few having anything more than the tattered remains of an old English translation. Folk were very generous- gifts were coming in right up to the day I left. I had hoped we might raise enough for six bikes, but then it began to look as if we might be able to afford ten. On arrival, I gave the gift to Bishop Joseph - he had no idea it was coming, and was able to negotiate for twelve bikes from the money raised here, and twelve Swahili bibles too. It was an answer to prayer for them, over and above what they had prayed and planned for. It left me gobsmacked and humbled, that we had been used by God in this marvellous way. Everywhere we went there were loud cheers when Bishop Joseph announced the news. The folk in Bungoma County send their thanks, and I add mine, for a wonderful gift. And, importantly, I think this is the way God works- so I leave it with you; you are the answer, in some way, to someone’s prayer. I hope you discover more of this, and soon. God Bless Your vicar, Roy 01423 359003/ [email protected]. P.S. Phase 2 of their development plan has 8 more bikes in it (and there aren’t any bikes in phase 3); any gifts you might care to make towards the £500 needed for these 8 bikes, can be paid by cheque to ‘NATA’ and sent to me, or deposited with your churchwardens. Many thanks. NEWS FROM THE CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY TOCKWITH Classical Reflection from the BBC programme ‘The Voice’ deserved to have had more people attending their concert on 30th May. Concerts are arranged throughout the year covering a wide spectrum of musical tastes and it is hoped that besides having a most enjoyable evening that a little money is raised to help with church funds. These young ladies had travelled up from Peterborough and it was a pity that there were only 42 members of the audience resulting that far from making any profit the evening was run at a loss. Naomi and Hannah treated us to some enchanting and hypnotic singing. Specialising in classic crossover we were privileged to be able to hear their first official single a few days before its official release, ‘A new day is dawning’. We hope that their singing career goes from strength to strength. Running such concerts at a loss is obviously unsustainable and we urge you to support the next concert in church which is on Saturday 11th July when we welcome the Elysian singers. They are a well-respected Wetherby based choir who sing a wide range of both classical and popular music catering for all musical tastes. Our Church is a Grade II listed building, standing prominently in the village, and drawing people to regular worship and to celebrate or mark the important milestones in our lives. Its existence and the facilities it offers us are taken very much for granted, but are only sustainable through the support of those who help provide funds to maintain it. The Church faces increasing annual costs as added activities also mean that it is necessary to be compliant with the law in respect of health and safety, security etc. All of this places a huge financial burden on those involved with the Church who are aware that the biggest percentage of funds come purely from worshippers and benefactors who are generous in their giving, or from fundraising efforts organised by the VCC. The responsibility of these fundraising activities is increasingly falling on a dwindling number of volunteers, some of whom are getting on in years and therefore not as able to undertake such regular commitment as they once did. The cost of simply making the building available for community use imposes a significant financial burden with additional costs for heating, lighting, insurance etc. Any repair work usually represents substantial additional costs and we are continually battling to maintain the building. We particularly need to examine why during periods of heavy rain there is water egress. We do need to keep on top of repairs. To do nothing and watch the building deteriorate running the risk of making the building become increasingly unfit for purpose would be a great shame, not just for the current generation but for future generations who may wish to worship and celebrate here. We hope we have moved the church forward in terms of worship, community development and spiritual awareness, by working with the congregation so that we all feel our opinions are heard and valued. We need to encourage people to accept change and to embrace it. We want to inspire those people who are not regular worshippers in Church and encourage them to help in securing the future of the Church in Tockwith. It is not just enough for people to agree that we need the Church in Tockwith but we need people to show their support which will make a big difference to the VCC. There are several ways in which you can help Set up some form of regular giving. It can be annually or monthly. It is a matter for you. Become involved in the life of the church. Help out at Services. Help with Fundraising Activities/Events. Be on the Church Opening and Closing Rota. Bake for fundraising events. Joint the grass cutting Rota. The help you are able to give does not stop at the above and there may be other ways you can help. Please do not think about helping but take positive action and get in touch with one of the Church Wardens Angela 01423 358067 or Deryck 01423 358364. Please tell us if there is anything more you would like to see at the Church of the Epiphany. Places for this month’s Summer Holiday Club between Monday 20th July and Wednesday 22nd July are very nearly fully subscribed so if you wish to register your child then you need to do it as soon as possible. The theme this year is Noah’s Ark. Thank you to all those that have volunteered from being group leaders, to the behind the scenes people who are making sure all the ‘animals’ form inside the Ark get fed. The first Sunday of next month 2nd August will be a Songs of Praise service at Tockwith Show with the Yorkshire Brass Quintet providing the music. Afterwards they will be playing light music to entertain the visitors. Everyone is welcome to come along to the Songs of Praise but if you intend to stay to enjoy the Show then you are asked to pay the standard admission fee. This service commences at 10.30am. "Stephen Blakey Milner, 14th December 1920 - 11th April 2015” Anne and family would like to thank all our friends and neighbours for their kind thoughts and expressions of sympathy at this sad time. Stephen loved Tockwith very much and your good wishes are a great comfort to us." On what felt like one of the coldest June afternoons in history thanks go to our intrepid afternoon tea servers who provided refreshments for both competitors and spectators alike at the Tockwith Tournament on 21st June.
