The Marston Moor Parish Prayer God our father help us to  Live for you  Love each other  Light the way ahead So that all our villages, and the world at large, may know you In Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

The Revd. Roy Shaw writes......

You are the answer, in some way, to someone’s prayer. I knew this to be true in a theoretical sense, but it came home to me in a real and heartfelt way while I was out in Kenya last month.

The story starts last November; in a casual conversation with Bishop Joseph under the banana trees by his house in Siyombe , we talked about the difference a bicycle can make to a day’s work in an African setting. The bishop got more excited as he thought about it. I registered this, and no more was said. Unknown to me, the bishop and his senior staff began praying about bicycles, and wrote them into their development plan. They would need eight for phase 1, to help the priests in their most scattered parishes get around to visit their parishioners.( None of the priests are paid, so it’s not as if they can save out of their stipend for a bike). The prayers continued.

As I planned my visit for this spring, I asked our church members if they would give gifts of money, for bikes, and for Swahili bibles, so few having anything more than the tattered remains of an old English translation. Folk were very generous- gifts were coming in right up to the day I left. I had hoped we might raise enough for six bikes, but then it began to look as if we might be able to afford ten.

On arrival, I gave the gift to Bishop Joseph - he had no idea it was coming, and was able to negotiate for twelve bikes from the money raised here, and twelve Swahili bibles too. It was an answer to prayer for them, over and above what they had prayed and planned for. It left me gobsmacked and humbled, that we had been used by God in this marvellous way. Everywhere we went there were loud cheers when Bishop Joseph announced the news. The folk in Bungoma County send their thanks, and I add mine, for a wonderful gift. And, importantly, I think this is the way God works- so I leave it with you; you are the answer, in some way, to someone’s prayer. I hope you discover more of this, and soon.

God Bless

Your vicar, Roy 01423 359003/ [email protected]. P.S. Phase 2 of their development plan has 8 more bikes in it (and there aren’t any bikes in phase 3); any gifts you might care to make towards the £500 needed for these 8 bikes, can be paid by cheque to ‘NATA’ and sent to me, or deposited with your churchwardens. Many thanks.

NEWS FROM THE CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY TOCKWITH

Classical Reflection from the BBC programme ‘The Voice’ deserved to have had more people attending their concert on 30th May. Concerts are arranged throughout the year covering a wide spectrum of musical tastes and it is hoped that besides having a most enjoyable evening that a little money is raised to help with church funds. These young ladies had travelled up from Peterborough and it was a pity that there were only 42 members of the audience resulting that far from making any profit the evening was run at a loss. Naomi and Hannah treated us to some enchanting and hypnotic singing. Specialising in classic crossover we were privileged to be able to hear their first official single a few days before its official release, ‘A new day is dawning’. We hope that their singing career goes from strength to strength.

Running such concerts at a loss is obviously unsustainable and we urge you to support the next concert in church which is on Saturday 11th July when we welcome the Elysian singers. They are a well-respected based choir who sing a wide range of both classical and popular music catering for all musical tastes.

Our Church is a Grade II listed building, standing prominently in the village, and drawing people to regular worship and to celebrate or mark the important milestones in our lives. Its existence and the facilities it offers us are taken very much for granted, but are only sustainable through the support of those who help provide funds to maintain it. The Church faces increasing annual costs as added activities also mean that it is necessary to be compliant with the law in respect of health and safety, security etc. All of this places a huge financial burden on those involved with the Church who are aware that the biggest percentage of funds come purely from worshippers and benefactors who are generous in their giving, or from fundraising efforts organised by the VCC. The responsibility of these fundraising activities is increasingly falling on a dwindling number of volunteers, some of whom are getting on in years and therefore not as able to undertake such regular commitment as they once did.

The cost of simply making the building available for community use imposes a significant financial burden with additional costs for heating, lighting, insurance etc. Any repair work usually represents substantial additional costs and we are continually battling to maintain the building. We particularly need to examine why during periods of heavy rain there is water egress. We do need to keep on top of repairs. To do nothing and watch the building deteriorate running the risk of making the building become increasingly unfit for purpose would be a great shame, not just for the current generation but for future generations who may wish to worship and celebrate here.

We hope we have moved the church forward in terms of worship, community development and spiritual awareness, by working with the congregation so that we all feel our opinions are heard and valued. We need to encourage people to accept change and to embrace it.

We want to inspire those people who are not regular worshippers in Church and encourage them to help in securing the future of the Church in Tockwith. It is not just enough for people to agree that we need the Church in Tockwith but we need people to show their support which will make a big difference to the VCC.

There are several ways in which you can help

 Set up some form of regular giving. It can be annually or monthly. It is a matter for you.  Become involved in the life of the church.  Help out at Services.  Help with Fundraising Activities/Events.  Be on the Church Opening and Closing Rota.  Bake for fundraising events.  Joint the grass cutting Rota.

The help you are able to give does not stop at the above and there may be other ways you can help. Please do not think about helping but take positive action and get in touch with one of the Church Wardens Angela 01423 358067 or Deryck 01423 358364.

Please tell us if there is anything more you would like to see at the Church of the Epiphany. Places for this month’s Summer Holiday Club between Monday 20th July and Wednesday 22nd July are very nearly fully subscribed so if you wish to register your child then you need to do it as soon as possible. The theme this year is Noah’s Ark. Thank you to all those that have volunteered from being group leaders, to the behind the scenes people who are making sure all the ‘animals’ form inside the Ark get fed.

The first Sunday of next month 2nd August will be a Songs of Praise service at Tockwith Show with the Brass Quintet providing the music. Afterwards they will be playing light music to entertain the visitors. Everyone is welcome to come along to the Songs of Praise but if you intend to stay to enjoy the Show then you are asked to pay the standard admission fee. This service commences at 10.30am.

"Stephen Blakey Milner, 14th December 1920 - 11th April 2015”

Anne and family would like to thank all our friends and neighbours for their kind thoughts and expressions of sympathy at this sad time. Stephen loved Tockwith very much and your good wishes are a great comfort to us."

On what felt like one of the coldest June afternoons in history thanks go to our intrepid afternoon tea servers who provided refreshments for both competitors and spectators alike at the Tockwith Tournament on 21st June. What a laugh on the first day of Summer !!!

Betty’s could not compete with the happy smiley faces of Karen, Janet and Susan. The cream teas were ‘naughty but nice.’

Tockwith C.E. Primary School

What a month it has been! We have had several school trips, sports day and an Ofsted inspection since we last posted an entry in the Parish news.

Sports Day was a massive success and we had a scorcher of a day to set it off. You can see from the photographs below that we really did have a wonderful day. Particular thanks need to go to our kitchen staff for the delicious BBQ they produced for over 250 people.

This month Year 1and 2 are visiting the Toy Museum in Ilkley and Year 6 are topping off a busy year with a trip to Flamingo Land. We have had some wonderful trips this year from residentials in Years 3 and 6 to meditation centres,Viking settlements, nature trails, synagogues and the theatre. These wonderful experiences are only possible due to the high number of parental contributions made towards these visits.

We also held a Religions of the World open evening in June, as you can see the classrooms were totally transformed. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening and were amazed with what the children had produced. We had Ofsted in this week conducting a thorough inspection of the school. Their report will be published on July 9th. We are not allowed to comment on the outcome before then.

We are all now moving toward the summer break and there is a great emphasis on preparations for our Year 6 production and also getting ready for our Leavers Assembly. We will give you an update on these events in next month’s edition.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE  Give me a sense of humour, Lord. Give me the grace to see a joke, To get some humour out of life, and pass it on to other folk

Catholic School Test For a Catholic school exam, young children were asked questions about the Old and New Testaments. These were some of the (real) results…. 1. Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree. Noah's wife was called Joan of Ark. Noah built an ark and the animals came on in pears. 2. Lot‟s wife was a pillar of salt during the day, but a ball of fire during the night. 3. Samson slayed the Philistines with the axe of the Apostles.

Never in our Church …. Our churchwarden has the courage, but not always the skills, to tackle any DIY job that needs doing around the church. For example, in the church shed are still pieces of the church lawn mower she once tried to fix. So our vicar wasn‟t surprised the day he found her in the vestry, vigorously prodding the vacuum cleaner with a screwdriver. "This thing won‟t cooperate," she complained. The vicar thought for a moment: "Why don‟t you drag it out to the shed and show it what you did to the lawn mower?"

Marriage During a heartfelt chat with her friend about relationships, my wife sighed and said, “You know, if something happened to Lloyd, I don‟t think I could ever marry again.” Her friend nodded sympathetically. “I know what you mean,” she said. “Once is enough.”

Find and replace A priest I know of uses a standard liturgy for funerals. To personalize each service, he enters a „find and replace‟ command into his word processor. The computer then finds the name of the deceased from the previous funeral and replaces it with the name of the deceased for the upcoming one. Not long ago, the priest told the computer to find the name “Mary” and replace it with “Edna.” The next morning, the funeral was going smoothly until the congregation intoned the Apostles‟ Creed. “Jesus Christ,” they read from the preprinted program, “born of the Virgin Edna.” THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Ideas are really easy, but getting them to happen is the hard part. Do you have information or a concern about something or someone that you think the police should know about then contact us on [email protected] alternatively call 101. For those callers who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, the service can be accessed via text phone on 18001 101.

The Parish Council has a permanent agenda item for Police Matters at every Parish Council meeting so if you have any matters to raise with the police you can also contact a Parish Councillor.

North Yorkshire Trading Standards have received reports in the last month of elderly residents being called from a company calling themselves the Claims Advisory Group advising the resident they had been overcharged by their bank by several thousand pounds. In order to obtain the refund they must obtain £200 of UKash vouchers which the company will collect prior to releasing the funds into the resident’s bank account. Needless to say this is a scam. Please report anything suspicious on 03454 04 05 06.

There has been an increase in the instances of adult cyclists cycling on the footpath. Not only is this an offence but it is totally unreasonable behaviour.

Whilst the police do give a little leeway to drivers wishing to assist the free flow of traffic by part parking on the footpath where the road is particularly narrow, some are taking it literally and completely obstructing the footpath. This action causes danger to pedestrians especially children, the elderly, blind and mothers with prams. In these circumstances drivers may be prosecuted.

The official advice would be if the road is not wide enough to park your vehicle safely, then find somewhere else; a car park, layby, or quiet side road or even more obvious in some cases YOUR OWN DRIVE.

There have been instances particularly in Marston Road when drivers have failed to give way to oncoming cars and committed themselves to overtake into the face of oncoming traffic for drivers to mount the kerb. It is an offence to drive on the pavement. They are not constructed to take the weight of vehicles, so in addition to being prosecuted for the afore mentioned offence, the Local Authority may also claim for the damaged caused to the footpath.

TOCKWITH WITH WILSTROP PARISH COUNCIL

Parish Council meetings are, as a rule, held on the third Wednesday of the month. Meetings are not normally held in August or December. Members of the public are welcome to attend these meetings and they start at 7.30pm and are held in Tockwith Church. The minutes of previous Parish Council meetings can be found on its own web site at www.tockwith.gov.uk. The Clerk Dawn Dyason can be contacted on 01423 358009 or email [email protected].

The Parish Council is happy to provide links to local organisations, clubs or charitable bodies so that they can share information to the wider community. Please contact [email protected] if you would like a link. It would be a good time to update your contact telephone numbers and give details of your meeting times etc.

We use the web site to distribute important information about matters that effect the Tockwith with Wilstrop Parish area.

Included on the website is information about the services offered by both County Council and Harrogate Borough Council. This includes advice regarding anti-social behaviour.

EVANS PROPERTY GROUP - UPDATE

Evans Property Group came back to the Parish Council and asked for a closed presentation on the understanding that they would also be holding a further pubic consultation meeting. At the presentation to Councillors, the main points made by Evans representatives were:-

* They will be building a pumping station to deal with sewage issues * They might consider passing place improvements along Southfield Lane but NYCC had not considered that this should be done. * They have offered to provide 21 parking spaces near the school

At the meeting Evans said they will be sending letters out to ALL residents explaining the changes they had made as a result of their public consultation but will not be likely to consider a further public meeting.

The Parish Council will meet again on the 15th July where this planning application will be raised. The Parish Council have to send their consultee response to HBC by the 16th July. In addition you can also make your comments on this planning application directly to HBC’s Planning dept via their website or by writing to them quoting reference no. 15/02228/OUTMAJ.

A REMINDER

Please note brown cardboard will no longer be collected by the door step collection team. It can be disposed of via your black bins. If brown cardboard is found in your paper waste it could mean all of your paper is not taken.

Additionally whilst the Thorp Arch recycling centre is strictly for the use of residents who pay their community charge to Leeds City Council they are prepared to continue the dispensation for Tockwith and residents who can take their rubbish there.

The Parish Council are acutely aware that the Community First Responder Scheme cannot operate 24hrs and are looking at funding an additional Defiberator in the village so that one can be accessed when a Responder is not available. We want to arrange this facility as soon as possible and am in negotiations with Springbank Surgery for it to be sited outside the surgery in Tockwith. The cost of providing a Defiberator will be in the region of £1,300 plus annual costs of around £50 to £60 per annum. If you wish to make a contribution to the cost of a Defiberator then please contact the Clerk.

CHASED BY COWS – A word of warning to walkers!

If you are out in the countryside this summer and end up in an unknown field, here is what to do: STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. Keep to paths and be prepared for cattle to react (aggressively?) if you have a dog with you. Move quickly, quietly and calmly. DON’T hang on to your dog if you are threatened – dogs can run much faster and reach safely quicker if you let them go. DON’T panic or run. If cattle follow you, just walk on quietly. NFU Mutual, the insurer who has given out the guidelines, says that about 500 people have been attacked and injured by cows in the past eight years. “Be aware of your surroundings,” urges NFU Mutual. “This is a working environment.”

A NOTICE RE: BAPTISMS

Baptisms take place within our normal services – usually a service which will be a Holy Communion plus Baptism. This is because Baptism signifies a welcome into the church, and the beginning of a Christian journey. It only makes sense therefore, if this sacrament takes place within the worshipping community, who along with the family, welcome the child into God‟s great family.

Baptism can only take place when a priest is present at a service, and if you are thinking of having your child baptized, you need to give a long „lead time‟ to the clergy. It may not be possible for a priest to be available on the Sunday you have in mind, and you may need to be flexible over the date, although every effort will be made to meet your wishes. In the first instance, please contact one of the Wardens to arrange a date.

Please note:

15TH JULY - ST SWITHUN (OR SWITHIN) SAINT FOR A RAINY DAY

St Swithun is apparently the saint you can blame for rainy summers. It is said that if it rains on his special day, 15 July, it will then rain for forty days after that. It all began when he was made Bishop of Winchester in 852 by King Ethelwulf of Wessex. It was an important posting: Winchester was the capital of Wessex, and during the 10 years Swithun was there, Wessex became the most important kingdom of England.

During his life, instead of washing out people’s summer holidays, and damping down their spirits, Swithun seems to have done a lot of good. He was famous for his charitable gifts and for his energy in getting churches built. When he was dying in 862, he asked that he be buried in the cemetery of the Old Minster, just outside the west door.

If he had been left there in peace, who knows how many rainy summers the English may have been spared over the last 1000 years. But, no, it was decided to move Swithun. By now, the 960s, Winchester had become the first monastic cathedral chapter in England, and the newly installed monks wanted Swithun in the cathedral with them. So finally, on 15 July 971, his bones were dug up and Swithun was transferred into the cathedral.

That same day many people claimed to have had miraculous cures. Certainly everyone got wet, for the heavens opened. The unusually heavy rain that day, and on the days following, was attributed to the power of St Swithun. Swithun was moved again in 1093, into the new Winchester cathedral. His shrine was a popular place of pilgrimage throughout the middle ages. The shrine was destroyed during the Reformation, and restored in 1962. There are 58 ancient dedications to Swithun in England.

Harrogate Borough Council small grant scheme open for applications

Harrogate Borough Council has £51,000 of funding available for the district‟s voluntary organisations, charities and community groups to help them develop new arts, culture, heritage and community projects.

The small grants scheme, which is now open to applications, provides grants of up to £3,000 per project for activities commencing mid-September onwards. Interested organisations have until 12 noon on Thursday 16 July 2015 to apply.

The purpose of the grant fund is to strengthen small voluntary organisations, charities and community groups by offering financial assistance for projects which will benefit local communities within the whole district, increase participation and engagement, and supporting new and innovative ideas.

The small grants scheme is replacing the council‟s Community Chest and Arts and Heritage grants funds, which have proven to be a huge success over the last 7 years, providing £306,000 of funding for over 185 projects.

Last year, twenty six organisations benefited from Harrogate Borough Council‟s Community Chest and Arts and Heritage grants including the Friends of Nidderdale AONB; Bilton & Woodfield Community Library; Harrogate Competitive Festival For Music, Speech and Drama; and the Masham Town Hall Community Charity.

Councillor Stanley Lumley, Cabinet Member for Culture and Sports said: “The small grants scheme is a fantastic means of helping local groups turn their ideas into reality. We are always keen to support community inspired activity which add value to the community and encourages participation, and it always pleasing to see how a small investment from the council can help make a big difference for local people.

“So many different types of groups have benefited from this funding stream over the years, such as sporting clubs, theatre societies, cultural festivals, libraries, local charities and horticultural groups. If you represent such a group and feel that you have a project which will enrich the local community then we would encourage you to apply.”

Anyone interested in applying can find full details and an application form at www.harrogate.gov.uk/communitygrants. Alternatively, they can call Fiona Friday at Harrogate Borough Council on 01423 500600 (ext 56068) or email at [email protected]

THE VILLAGE MEMORIAL UPDATE Commissioned by the Parish Council

A visual of how the monument will look when completed

The service of commemoration will be in Tockwith Church on Sunday 11th October at 2.00pm. There will be more information on this as plans go forward.

The dead tree has been dealt with and we now are in the process of seeking approval from the Harrogate Planning Department of the materials to be used.

The license from the North Yorkshire Highways to place the memorial on land has been more problematic. Despite someone being prepared to do the ground work in preparation for the erection of the memorial it needs to be done by a NYCC approved contractor. Although this work will take place well away from the highway NYCC will not be swayed on this. The cost of the work has now increased substantially and some thought has to be given as to how this extra money will be raised.

Items continue to be collected for the exhibition on 10th October but there can never be enough information. Norman Waller would like to hear from anyone who has memories of the crash or any photographs or newspaper cuttings which could be incorporated into the exhibition. Contact 01423 358588 or email him [email protected].

Children from Tockwith School are also going to display poems about the crash.

It's been a busy time for the Scouts. In May we attended Big Camp at Harrogate Show Ground where we had three days of fun activities along with 6,000 other beavers, cubs and scouts from all over the country. There were hundreds of activities of all kinds from abseiling, bungee trampolining and a caving truck to donkey rides, hot tubs and crafts - there were even bands on in the evenings giving the camp a real festival feel. Everyone, leaders included, had a great time.

The following weekend, one intrepid team of scouts entered the Tohunga competition. This involves teams undertaking an 8 mile walk and camping overnight, before doing another 8 mile walk. It's a real test of scouting skills and perseverance and they get marked on their equipment, progress and attitude throughout the weekend, as well as their cooking - all without any leaders to help them!

Recent weeks have seen us work on our navigation and firelighting skills and learning how to play the Paralympic sport, Goalball. We're now all looking forward to our Summer Camp at Hensley Wood in South Yorkshire in July where we have lots of fun activities planned. A special mention should also go to two scouts, Owen and Finn who have volunteered to help at Agoonoree, a camp for special needs scouts held near Doncaster. Besides having fun, they will take on a lot of responsibility and we're looking forward to hearing about their experiences.

Energy-Efficiency Improvements to Our Village Hall

The Village Hall management committee secured grant funding from Yorventure recently to help with more energy efficient management of the Village Hall. The aim of these measures is to reduce future energy bills …. this will help to keep future hire rates down and will also be good for the good of the planet. The benefits to you, our users, include;  new A-rated super-efficient fridge and freezer,  an automatic tap in the kitchen which conserves water and is more hygienic with its optional hands-free operation.  the installation of a smart thermostat ensuring our users are warm when the hall is in use but energy is no longer wasted when the hall is empty.  A rainwater harvesting system to reduce our metred water use, and the gardener and plants are much happier too with the unchlorinated water.

We are very grateful for the support our Village Hall has received from Yorventure with this and previous projects that have contributed so much to the development and sustainability of our hall.

Home composting – buy a compost bin from £12

How to purchase a compost bin

The and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership are part of the national framework to supply York and North Yorkshire residents with low cost compost bins. The partnership is currently offering residents two sizes of compost bin at the following subsidised prices:

 The 220 litre compost bin costs £12.00 plus delivery.  The 330 litre compost bin costs £14.00 plus delivery.

There is also a buy one get one half price offer on the already discounted prices which means residents of York and North Yorkshire can team up with a family member, friend or neighbour to get a compost bin for as little as £9 each. Delivery price is £5.99 per order. For more information and to purchase a compost bin please visit www.getcomposting.com

Compost bins from a garden centre can cost around £40 so you will save money by buying through this scheme.

Both the 220 litre and 330 litre compost bins are called Compost Converters. They are made in the UK from 100% recycled plastic, have a windproof secure push-fit lid and removable side hatch, are carbon footprint certified by the Carbon Trust and are guaranteed for 15 years.

There are other methods of composting, see the Alternative composting systems page for more information. Products such as caddies, wormeries, hot bins and kitchen composters can also be purchased at www.getcomposting.com or other retailers.

Show President Stuart Coggrave, his wife Pam and their family held their epic three day open garden event between 23rd and 25th May in aid of his chosen charity Macmillan Cancer, amid what turned out to be glorious weather considering that for most of May the weather felt as though we were in the month of March.

Stuart sent the following message ”I would like to stress how marvellous the support was from the village and from many supporters of Tockwith Show. Macmillian Cancer being the President’s chosen charity. I felt the strongest recommendation came from the fact that several people came for a second visit. The total raised was £1,950 which we are very pleased with.”

On Tuesday 26th May 2015 Mr Ivan Andrews gave a talk entitled “Waterloo Campaign 1815 –did the French snatch defeat from victory”. A topical talk with the 200th anniversary of this campaign this June. Mr Andrews told his story as if given by Col. John Freemantle speaking in 1855 two years after the death of Wellington. Freemantle had been able to talk to some of the leading French military after the peace and understood more of the reasons for the Napoleonic forces‟ strategies in the field. Mr Andrews described the different forces and personalities in the campaign and showed maps of the disposition of the various forces on different days between 14th and 18th of June. Big contributory factors leading to the defeat of the French under Napoleon were poor communications between his forces and Generals and the appalling wet weather at that time. Mr Andrews was thanked for his talk after answering questions.

The meeting on 28th July is the Summer Outing and the last possible date for confirming a place is 10th July. The Club normally meets on the morning of the last Tuesday of the month in Long Marston Village Hall, which has a good car park. New members and guests are welcome, contact the Secretary, Mr Bob Ellis on 01423 358 393.

On this occasion they will present a spine chilling mystery which will bring the house down (literally) and during the interval there will be a special treat when the Farndale Laureate will be chosen from the three finalists of the poetry reading group.

Christian Aid week This year Tockwith and Bilton villages combined collected £1,086.96 Thank you! Christian Aid turned seventy this year. It was launched in the aftermath of the Second World War, the brainchild of the British Council of Churches. The initial vision was of a world where every person is respected because they are human, a world where everyone's needs are met, a world without poverty. The work continues, thank you for making it possible.

Christian Aid works around the world and is funded largely by money collected once a year in May. Christian Aid is a Christian organisation that insists the world can and must be changed to one where everyone can live a full life, free from poverty. They provide urgent, practical and effective assistance where the need is great, tackling the effects of poverty as well as its root causes. If you would still like to give and didn't receive an envelope in May, donations can be made online at caweek.org or text MILK to 70040 to give £5 to help buy cows to provide milk and an income to help families in great need. Our communities helped other communities build a brighter tomorrow. Thank you.

 When is £1 worth £1.25?

When you visit Church and you put some money in the collection – why not put it in a Gift Aid Envelope. It won‟t cost you anything extra but it will benefit the Church 25p extra for every £1 you donate.

Thought for Tomorrow Personal reflections by Henry Woods

I have seen several of the BBC programmes about the start of the Great War and noted in parallel the ambivalence of the Beeb, when it comes to programmes such as Songs of Praise. A Centenary programme is notified well in advance with trailers, while the timing of Songs of Praise is changed from week to week and channel to channel, possibly according to the whim of programmers. This suggests that programmes with a religious context can be shifted confirming the intellectual view that they are of little consequence. Of course it may be that our faith is being harshly tested to keep numbers of viewers well down and us guessing what time Songs of Praise will be next Sunday.

These thoughts open up a wider argument and a deeper problem. The wider argument centres on the question of what can we believe in terms of faith? Those who point to the impossibility of believing in miracles seem to assume that our progress has reached a conclusion and ignore its dynamism. If you had told a 1st Century Jew or Gentile about atomic science in all its ramifications,, the internal combustion engine, aero-flight, transplant of hearts and lungs and other advances in science and technology, he or she would have laughed you to scorn labelling you a lunatic.

If you fell asleep like Rip van Winkle and awoke a century hence, we can only guess at the progress which will astonish our descendants. They may find common ground with those who mocked Our Lord upon the Cross –“He saved others, himself he cannot save.” now in alliance with those unbelievers who exhibit the arrogance of academics. Christians do not under rate the power of Faith and never fail to acknowledge the new developments all around us, especially in communications and computers

We are still at the beginning of very great changes from the advances in science and technology, many of which render the miracles more believable. Both in the Church and the secular world we need to reflect on the impact such changes may have on our daily lives. It could be an exciting journey, and I hope rising generations will use their God-given talents to make it supremely worthwhile in both the material and spiritual sense – at the junction of faith and reality

Jottings from the Methodist Manse …… From the Methodist Minister Gail Hunt

Are you off on holiday this summer? How do you pack your case? Are you a “ layer and tissue-paper” packer as my dear mum was or one of the “roll up and stuff” brigade. And have you noticed the change in travelling cases. At one time there was little variation in the standard “suit case.” However today travelling bags come in all sorts of shapes and sizes to accommodate the various things we need to take on holiday and each of us tries to put an identifying mark on them so it‟s easier to find on the travel belt at the airport! Then there is the fear when you go away that after carefully packing your case, you will be asked to empty it at the airport security. Or you collect it at your destination only to find a card inside to say it has been searched at some point on the way and everything has been put back upside down! Whatever our packing experience however we still set off on our holiday travels.

Life too can be likened to a journey and many of us have trouble with our luggage on that journey too. Over the years we pick up baggage, over load ourselves with commitments or habits or everything just seems to get in a muddle. I often find that summer is a good time to stop and reflect on what I am doing, to perhaps re arrange a few things in my life‟s baggage, or even take some out, and to also take some time to rest and enjoy the longer days and sun.

So whether you are travelling or staying at home this summer, I pray that you will continue on life‟s journey knowing what to take, or leave behind, when to rest and also knowing that you never travel alone.

Just a thought...

Gail
