TEAM NOTES:

GUENTZEL VS. THE BLUE JACKETS Jake Guentzel has made a habit of finding the back of the net against Columbus in his three seasons with the Penguins. In 11 regular season games, Guentzel has seven goals, five assists and 12 points. His seven goals and 12 points are the most he has against any one team, and since his NHL debut, only New York Rangers’ forward Chris Kreider has tallied more goals (12) against the Blue Jackets than Guentzel.

Last season, Guentzel recorded his first career regular-season hat trick in the Penguins 4-2 win over the Jackets at home on November 24.

GALCHENYUK, KAHUN, TANEV DEBUT Offseason acquisitions Alex Galchenuk, Dominik Kahun and Brandon Tanev all made their debuts in a Penguins sweater on Thursday in the team’s home opener. Galchenyuk and Tanev were centered by Evgeni Malkin, while Kahun saw time on the third line with Nick Bjugstad and Jared McCann. Below is a quick recap on how they fared:

Galchenyuk: Recorded one shot and three hits in 15:22 minutes. Also played 2:53 minutes on the power play Kahun: Skated 10:49 minutes, recording one hit and one blocked shot Tanev: Led all Penguins with five hits (tied) and three blocked shots (tied). Also had three shots in 13:31 minutes

NOTEABLES FROM LAST GAME (OCT. 3 VS. BUF) *Evgeni Malkin scored the lone goal for the Penguins on the power play. The goal gave Malkin 15 points (5G-10A) in 13 career season openers. His 15 points in season opening games are tied for fourth in the NHL among active players. *Sidney Crosby picked up an assist on Malkin’s goal, giving him 14 points (6G-8A) in 13 career season openers. The assist was the 1,217th point of his career, moving him into a tie with former Penguin Larry Murphy for the 42nd most points in NHL history. *Kris Letang finished with an assist and led all skaters with 27:45 minutes of time-on-ice. Letang has led the Penguins in TOI/G in each of the last five seasons. *Pittsburgh finished 1-for-5 on the power play, and have now scored a power-play goal in four-consecutive season opening games.

PENS TO WEAR 3RD JERSEYS TONIGHT The Penguins will be wearing their yellow third jerseys tonight for the first time this season. Last year, Pittsburgh went 10-2 in them over the course of the season. Below is the team’s full third jersey schedule this year:

Oct. 5 - Columbus Oct. 19 - Vegas Nov. 2 - Edmonton Nov. 9 - Chicago Nov. 16 - Toronto Dec. 14 - Los Angeles Dec. 28 - Nashville Jan. 5 - Florida Jan. 19 - Boston Feb. 16 - Detroit Feb. 22 - Buffalo Mar. 7 - Washington Mar. 8 - Carolina Mar. 15 - NY Islanders Mar. 22 – Washington

WBS BEGINS 2019-20 CAMPAIGN The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins open up their 2019-20 season on the road tonight when they take on the Hershey Bears. They’ll be led by head coach Mike Vellucci, who is starting his first season as the WBS bench boss after being named AHL Coach of the Year in 2018-19 after coaching the Charlotte Checkers to a Calder Cup Championship. David Warsofsky will serve as WBS captain while defenseman Kevin Czuczman and newly acquired forward Andrew Agozzino will be the alternate captains.

MURRAY CLOSING IN ON 100 WINS Penguins goaltender Matt Murray, who entered the 2019-20 campaign with 97 career wins, is looking to join Marc-Andre Fleury (375), Tom Barrasso (226) and Ken Wregget (104) as the only netminders in Penguins history to win 100 games with the team.

More impressively, Murray has reached his 97 wins in just 162 career appearances, and has a chance to make history as one of the fastest goalies in NHL history to notch 100 wins. Below is a list of goaltenders to reach 100 wins in the fewest number of games post- expansion era:

PRESEASON RECAP Pittsburgh finished the preseason with a 2-1-3 record. Justin Schultz led the team in points with six (6A), while Bryan Rust and rookie Nathan Legare paced the team with two goals apiece. In total, the Penguins got goals from 15 different players.

Matt Murray, who appeared in three of the six games, finished a strong preseason with a 2-0-1 record, 1.62 goals-against average and .942 save percentage.

2018-19 RECAP The Penguins (44-26-12) relied on their stars to crack the 100-point mark for the 13th time in club history. By doing so, the Pens locked up their 13th-straight playoff berth, extending a club record in that category. Pittsburgh’s 13-consecutive playoff appearances represents the longest active postseason streak among all NHL teams.

The Penguins have now hit the 100-point mark 10 times in 12 full seasons during their playoff streak (excludes the lockout campaign). Since the streak began in 2006-07, the Pens have more wins (605) and points (1,315) than any NHL team. San Jose sits in second place in both categories with 594 and 1,301, respectively.

Other team highlights included: *The Penguins scored a total of 271 goals in the regular season, the sixth-highest total in the NHL. The team’s 271 goals mark the third-highest goal total during the Sidney Crosby era. *Special teams played a key factor in Pittsburgh’s offensive output, as it had the league’s fifth-best power play, which operated at a 24.6% success rate. Despite receiving the 21st most power-play opportunities (228) in the NHL, the Penguins still managed to score the fifth-most power-play goals (56). *Crosby (100 points in 79 games), Phil Kessel (82 points in 82 games) and Evgeni Malkin (72 points in 68 games) all finished averaging a point-per-game or better. *Malkin became the 88th player in NHL history, and fifth Russian-born player, to record 1,000 career points on March 12 against the Washington Capitals. *Crosby skated in his 916th-career game on February 9, surpassing Mario Lemieux for most games played in franchise history. Less than one month later, Crosby became the 48th player in NHL history to record 1,200 points on March 5 with an assist on a Jake Guentzel goal. *Kris Letang broke three major team records for a defenseman including points (441, Oct. 6 vs. Montreal), goals (109, Feb. 11 at Philadelphia) and games played (704, Nov. 27 at Winnipeg).

BLUE JACKETS NOTES ENTERING THEIR 19th SEASON Columbus enters its 19th NHL season, looking to continue its upward trajectory and earn the seventh winning season in the past eight campaigns. The Jackets completed their 18th season with a 47-31-4 record (98 pts.), finishing fifth in the Metropolitan Division, eighth in the Eastern Conference and 13th overall in the NHL. The 2018-19 campaign marked the second-best regular season in club history after 2016-17’s 50-24-8 (108 pts.) season.

OPENING TIDBITS The Blue Jackets open 2019-20 and play three of their first four games of the campaign at Nationwide Arena. Following Friday’s 4-1 loss to Toronto, Columbus is now 8-9-1-1 overall in season openers, and has opened at home in 13 of their first 19 campaigns. The Jackets are 10-7-1 in the first game of a campaign played on the road, including wins in eight of the past 11 road openers.

YOUTH IS SERVED (AGAIN) Thanks in large part due to five rookies, the Jackets’ opening game roster sits as the youngest roster (25.7) for the third time in the past four seasons. CBJ had the youngest roster in both 2016-17 (25.1) and 2018-19 (25.1). The Jackets had the sixth youngest roster in 2017-18 (25.8).

ROOKIE READY The Blue Jackets’ opening night roster features five rookies: Emil Bemstrom, Vladislav Gavrikov, Jakob Lilja, Elvis Merzlikins and Alexandre Texier. Bemstrom led the SHL in goals with 23, tied for the third-most by a teenager in a season in league history. Gavrikov came over from the KHL and played a pair of playoff contests last season. Texier played two regular season games and eight playoff contests with CBJ. Lilja, a teammate of Bemstrom with Djurgarden in the SHL, finished 10th-T in the league in points with 12-25-37. Merzlikins joins the team after winning the Swiss National League’s Goaltender of the Year award in 2015-16 and 2017-18. Bemstrom, Lilja and Texier each played in the opener vs. Toronto.

OCTOBER BREAKDOWN After opening the season vs. Toronto, the Blue Jackets will play 11 more games in the month of October, including six more at Nationwide Arena. The club will play in three sets of back-to-back games (10/4 vs. TOR and 10/5 at PIT, 10/11 vs. ANA and 10/12 at CAR as well as 10/18 at CHI and 10/19 vs. NYI). Columbus will face four division opponents this month (PIT, CAR – 2x, NYI, PHI) and six Eastern Conference teams (TOR – 2x, PIT, BUF, CAR – 2x, NYI, PHI).

GOING BACK-TO-BACK After falling to Toronto, 4-1, the Blue Jackets travel to Pittsburgh to complete a season-opening back-to-back set. The Blue Jackets have 16 sets of back-to-back games this season. Last year, the Blue Jackets played 16 back-to-back sets and posted an overall record of 17-12-3 with a 7-6-3 in the second game. The club swept five sets and failed to pick up a point in three of them. The Jackets open up a season with a back-to-back set for the third-straight campaign and 10th time overall.

A THIRD-STRAIGHT PLAYOFF APPEARANCE Columbus earned a playoff spot for the third-straight campaign, a first in franchise history in 2018-19. CBJ advanced past the first round of the playoffs for the first time in franchise history after sweeping the Presidents’ Trophy winners, Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-0. It marked the fourth time in NHL history, and the first time in the first round, that a team swept the best team in a playoff series. CBJ ultimately fell to Boston 4-2 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

IN RARE COMPANY Cam Atkinson is looking to replicate his career-best 41-goal season and a key to fulfilling that will be getting off to a good start. After tallying in Friday’s opener, Atkinson has now scored a goal in each of Columbus’ last six season-opening games, tying an NHL record in the process. Two other players have scored in their team’s first game in six consecutive seasons: Mud Bruneteau (DET, 6; 1940- 41–1945-46) and Yvon Cournoyer (MTL, 6; 1973-74–1978-79).

NYQUIST’S NIGHT? Gustav Nyquist played his first game as a Blue Jacket last night vs. Toronto, skating 12:38. The Swedish forward is coming off a career season where he accumulated career highs in assists and points with 22-38-60 in 81 games split between Detroit and San Jose. Nyquist has notched 4-8-12 in 15 career games vs. the Penguins, including 3-3-6 in the last five meetings.

ON THE FARM The AHL’s Cleveland Monsters kicked off their season on Friday night with a 3-2 win at Laval as Calvin Thurkauf, Adam Clendening and Trey Fix-Wolansky scored in the victory. Elsewhere, Tyler Angle (2019, 7th Round) has opened his season in Windsor (OHL) with 3-1-4 in four games while Kirill Marchenko (2018, 2nd round) has 6-1-7 in eight games with SKA-Neva St. Petersburg in the VHL.
