MARINO CRACKS OPENING NIGHT ROSTER After a strong showing in the preseason, defenseman John Marino has earned a spot on the Penguins 23-man opening night roster after Bryan Rust was placed on long-term injured reserve. The Penguins acquired Marino from the Oilers this summer in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick, and after signing him to a two-year entry level contract on August 8, the 22-year old rookie dressed in a team-leading five preseason games (tied) where he registered two assists. His plus-5 ranked second on the team, trailing only fellow blueliner Marcus Pettersson (+7).

Marino, who has spent the previous three seasons playing collegiate hockey for Harvard University, is looking to make his NHL debut.

CROSBY’S TWO-WAY PLAY Captain Sidney Crosby continued to assert himself as one of the top players in the NHL after turning in the sixth 100-point campaign (35G-65A) of his career in 2018-19. He was one of just six players in the NHL to register 100 or more points, and was also one of just eight players to record at least 30+ goals and 60+ assists.

Crosby also had one of the best two-way performances of his career, putting himself in the conversation for the Selke Trophy, awarded to the top defensive forward in the NHL. He ranked fifth in the NHL in faceoff wins with 1,012 (55.4 win percentage), and led all Penguins’ forwards with a plus-18, finishing fourth overall in Selke Trophy voting with 34 first-place votes. Over the course of his career, Crosby has refined the defensive aspects of his game at no expense to his offensive output, and especially over the last five seasons, the Selke Trophy voting has reflected his improvement in his two-way play:

Year Points Rank in Selke Trophy Voting 2018-19 100 (35G-65A) 4th 2017-18 89 (29G-60A) 9th 2016-17 89 (44G-45A) 10th 2015-16 85 (36G-49A) 7th 2014-15 84 (28G-56A) 19th

GUENTZEL LOOKS TO BUILD OFF OF BREAKOUT YEAR Jake Guentzel took a huge step forward in his third NHL season when he scored a team-high 40 goals in 2018-19 while playing in all 82 games for a second-straight season. In doing so, Guentzel became just the second Penguins player not named Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin to lead the team in goals during the Crosby/Malkin Era, joining (22 goals in 2012-13).

More impressively, Guentzel did the bulk of his damage at even strength where he scored 33 of his 40 goals. His 33 even-strength tallies ranked third in the NHL (tied) in 2018-19, trailing only Toronto’s (37) and ’s (35), and was the most scored by a Penguin in a single season since Evgeni Malkin had 38 even-strength goals during his 50-goal campaign in 2011-12.

2018-19 RECAP The Penguins (44-26-12) relied on their stars to crack the 100-point mark for the 13th time in club history. By doing so, the Pens locked up their 13th-straight playoff berth, extending a club record in that category. Pittsburgh’s 13-consecutive playoff appearances represents the longest active postseason streak among all NHL teams.

The Penguins have now hit the 100-point mark 10 times in the 12 full seasons during their playoff streak (excludes the lockout campaign). Since the streak began in 2006-07, the Pens have more wins (605) and points (1,315) than any NHL team. San Jose sits in second place in both categories with 594 and 1,301, respectively.

Other team highlights included: *The Penguins scored a total of 271 goals in the regular season, the sixth-highest total in the NHL. The team’s 271 goals mark the third-highest goal total during the Sidney Crosby era. *Special teams played a key factor in Pittsburgh’s offensive output, as it had the league’s fifth-best power play, which operated at a 24.6% success rate. Despite receiving the 21st most power-play opportunities (228) in the NHL, the Penguins still managed to score the fifth-most power-play goals (56). *Crosby (100 points in 79 games), (82 points in 82 games) and Evgeni Malkin (72 points in 68 games) all finished averaging a point-per-game or better.

RUTHERFORD ELECTED TO HHOF & HONORED BY OHL Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford’s summer was a busy one. In addition to re-tooling the team’s roster via trades and free agency, Rutherford was elected to the in the builders’ category on June 25th, 2019. A three-time Champion (CAR – 2006; PIT – ’16, ’17), Rutherford has spent the past 25 years as an executive in the NHL, and is one of just seven general managers to win three or more Stanley Cups since the 1967 NHL expansion. This year’s Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on November 18th in Toronto.

In addition to Rutherford’s Hall of Fame induction, the Hockey League (OHL) re-named their goaltender of the year award to the ‘Jim Rutherford Goaltender of the Year Award’. Rutherford is a former two-time OHL Executive of the Year (1993, ’94) and won an OHL Championship with Windsor in 1988.
