TEAM NOTES:

SID NAMED THIRD STAR OF THE WEEK After recording three goals, four assists and seven points, helping his team compile a 3-1 record in four games, Sidney Crosby was named NHL Third Star of the Week for the week ending October 13.

Crosby’s week included a trio of multi-point games and at least one point in all four of his appearances. Two of the center’s multi-point games came over the weekend when the Penguins exploded for seven goals in each of the teams’ games against Minnesota and Winnipeg.

The Penguins center ranked second (tied) with seven points in four games this week, behind only Winnipeg’s Patrick Laine’s eight points.

Crosby is currently riding a season-opening six-game point streak (3G-7A). He, along with teammate Kris Letang are just two of nine players in the NHL to record points in all of their team’s games this season. His 10 points are currently tied for sixth in the NHL.

LAFFERTY’S BIG WEEKEND After only four games in the NHL, Sam Lafferty is making a huge impact on the Penguins. The Penguins rookie entered the weekend with zero points through two games and proceeded to record back-to-back multi-point efforts, vaulting himself up the rookie scoring leaders list. On Friday night in Minnesota, Lafferty recorded his first point, assisting on an Adam Johnson goal and then followed it up by scoring his first NHL goal on an empty-net late in the game. The next night in Winnipeg, Lafferty scored twice, including his first- career game-winning goal.

Lafferty is tied for second among all NHL rookies in goals (3) and third in points (5). His 1.25 points-per-game ranks first in the NHL among rookies, just slightly ahead of Colorado’s Cale Makar (1.20).

With his goals over the weekend, the Hollidaysburg, PA native joins Ryan Malone (Pittsburgh, PA) and Bill Thomas (Pittsburgh, PA) as the only western natives to score a goal with the Penguins.

LETANG REACHES 500 POINTS With an assist on Sam Lafferty’s second period goal on October 13 at Winnipeg, Kris Letang became the first defenseman in franchise history to earn 500 career points. Throughout Penguins history, only eight players have more points than Letang, including Sidney Crosby (1,226) and Evgeni Malkin (1,003).

Letang (2G-6A) and Crosby (3G-7A), along with Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl (4G-8A) and Nashville's Filip Forsberg (5G-3A) are the only players in the NHL to have a point streak in six consecutive games this season.

Letang’s eight points on the year are also tied for the third most points among NHL defensemen trailing only Washington’s John Carlson (11) and Toronto's Morgan Rielly (9).

LUCKY NUMBER 7 Despite injuries to key forwards Nick Bjugstad, Alex Galchenyuk, Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust, the Penguins are still flling up the back of the net in record fashion. Pittsburgh has scored seven goals in three of their six games games this season, incuding on back-to- back days against Minnesota on Saturday, and Winnipeg on Sunday. Per NHLPR, that marks just the fourth time in franchise history that Pittsburgh has scored seven goals on consecutive days and the first time since Oct. 17-18, 1986 (7-3 W at BUF, 8-4 W vs. NJD).

Through 91 NHL games this season, there have been seven instances where a team has scored seven or more goals, with the Penguins accounting for three of those occasions. Last season, the Penguins only scored seven-plus goals four times.

The Penguins currently rank fourth in the NHL in goals for (25) and third in goals per game (4.17).

SHORTY GET LOOSE Zach Aston-Reese scored the Penguins’ first shorthanded goal of the 2019-20 campaign late in the third period of Sunday’s game against the Jets. With Aston-Reese’s shorty, Pittsburgh is now one of 13 teams to score a shorthanded goal this season.

Last year, Pittsburgh scored 12 shorthanded goals, a figure that was tied for third-most in the NHL. Below is a look at the Penguins shorthanded goal leaders from last year:

LAST GAME - Oct. 14 (Colorado 6 at Washington 3) The Avalanche scored on their first three shots and tallied four goals in the first period en route to a 6-3 victory over the Capitals in Washington. Nazem Kadri scored one of those first-period goals and assisted on two others for the Avs, who improved to a league- best 5-0-0 on the season. Mikko Rantanen added three points (1g/2a) and linemates Gabriel Landeskog (2a) and Nathan MacKinnon (1g/1a) also had multi-point efforts. Philipp Grubauer made 29 saves to improve to 4-0-0. • The last time the Avalanche scored four goals in the opening period of a road game was Nov. 30, 2006 at Edmonton (also four). • Cale Makar became the fifth defenseman in NHL history to record points in each of his first five career games. • Kadri's three first-period points set a career high for a single period. He's the first Avalanche player to have three points in the opening period of a game since Nov. 14, 2015 (Mikhail Grigorenko at Montreal). • Rantanen tallied his second game-winning goal, tied for the NHL lead. • Rantanen, MacKinnon also extended their point streaks to five games, the first instance in Avalanche/Nordiques history that three players opened a season with simultaneous five-game point streaks.

TONIGHT The Avalanche continues their season-long, six-game road trip tonight in Pittsburgh against the Penguins. Colorado opened the trip with a 6-3 victory over the Capitals on Monday. The Avs, who are scheduled for a pair of five-game road swings as well (Nov. 12-21 and Feb. 1-9), will have three road trips of five or more games for just the second time in franchise history (also 1999-00). This trip continues with stops in Florida, Tampa, St. Louis and Vegas. However, the Avs will return home for a few days after St. Louis before finishing the trip in Vegas. The Avalanche went 4-0 on their season-opening, four-game homestand, the club's longest home stay to begin a season in franchise history.

STARTING STRONG The Avalanche, the NHL's last unbeaten team, have started a season 5-0-0 for just the second time since relocating to Denver. With a victory tonight, Colorado would equal its best start since moving to the Mile High City (6-0-0 in 2013-14). Overall, this is the fourth time that the Avalanche/Nordiques have won their first five games of a season.

MAKAR FOR MORE HISTORY Cale Makar is the first defenseman in franchise history and just the fifth defender in NHL history to open his career with points in each of his first five regular-season games. With a goal or an assist tonight, Makar would tie the NHL record for the longest point streak by a defenseman to begin his career. Makar, who joined the Avs during their first round series against Calgary last spring, was the first defenseman in league history to score a goal while making his NHL debut in the .

THREE'S COMPANY Colorado has scored three or more goals in every game this season, the first team in Avalanche history (since 1995-96) to open a season by scoring at least three goals in each of their first five contests. The Avs scored four or more goals in each of their first three games this year, which was also an Avalanche first. Colorado is averaging 4.4 goals-per-game, second to only Nashville (4.6). Colorado finished 10th in scoring last season with 258 goals, the club's highest total since 2006-07 (267).

HIGHER POWER Colorado's power-play unit has scored in all five games, going 6-for-22 (27.3%). This marks the first time since 2009-10 that the Avs have scored a power-play goal in each of their first five games. That 2009-10 club did it in their first six contests. The Avs ranked seventh in power-play percentage at 22.0% last season, the club’s second straight top-10 finish after ranking eighth the year before. It was the first time in 13 years that the PP unit finished among the top 10 in back-to-back seasons.

HOME COOKING Colorado is 4-0 at Pepsi Center this year and has won 10 straight regular-season home games dating back to last year, matching the franchise record for the longest home winning streak including multiple seasons. The Avs are 15-2-1 in their last 18 regular-season contests on home ice. If you include the club's 4-1 home record during the playoffs, the Avs are 14-1-0 in their last 15 games at Pepsi Center and 19-3-1 in their last 23. • The last time Colorado won its first four home games to start a season was in 2009-10 (6-0-0). • This marks the fourth time that Colorado/Quebec has ever won 10 consecutive home games and the first time over multiple seasons. The Avs won 10 straight at Pepsi Center in 2017-18 and the Nordiques won 10 straight at Le Colisee twice: 1994-95 and 1983-84. • The Avalanche's 4-0-0 season-opening homestand marked the first time they've swept a homestand of at least four games since Dec. 17-23, 2011 (4-0-0).

AVS & PENGUINS Tonight is the first of two meetings between the Avalanche and Penguins.

SEASON SCHEDULE Oct. 16 @ PIT Jan. 10 vs. PIT

CONNECTIONS Ian Cole was a member of Pittsburgh's back-to-back Stanley Cup teams (2016, 2017) ... Joseph Blandisi was drafted by Colorado in 2012 (sixth round).

MAKING EACH PERIOD COUNT The Avs have scored at least one goal in 12 of their 15 periods (13 of 16 if you include overtime). Colorado scored in each of its first nine periods this season, becoming the first Avalanche team to ever score in each of their first nine periods to open a campaign. The previous record was goals in each of the first six periods set in 2013-14 and 2018-19. Prior to relocating, the Nordiques scored in their first nine periods twice: 1982-83 (also nine) and 1992-93 (first 18).

FEELING GRUBY Philipp Grubauer is 4-0-0 so far, the longest win streak by an Avalanche goaltender to start a season since 2003-14 (Jean-Sebastien Giguere 7-0-0, Semyon Varlamov 5-0-0). Going back to last season, Grubi is 11-0-2 in his last 13 regular-season starts with a 1.90 GAA and .945 Sv% (790:41 min, 455 SA, 25 GA). He owns a .921 career save percentage, the fifth highest all-time among who have appeared in at least 100 games since shots became official in 1955-56. He is just barely behind Dominik Hasek, John Gibson, Ken Dryden and Tuuka Rask (all .922).

FIRST FOR FRANKIE Pavel Francouz stopped 34-of-36 shots to pick up the win in his first career NHL start on Saturday against Arizona. Francouz became the first Avalanche goaltender to earn the victory in first career start since Vitaly Kolesnik on Dec. 7, 2005 vs. Boston. (Oct. 8, 2005 at Dallas) and David Aebischer (Oct. 18, 2000 at Columbus) are the only others to win their first NHL starts since the franchise relocated from Quebec. Francouz joined Sergei Mylnikov (31 years, 162 days on March 17, 1990) as the second goaltender in Avalanche/Nordiques history to record his first win at age 29 or older.

O' CAPTAIN Gabriel Landeskog, who was named captain of the Avalanche on Sept. 4, 2012, begins his eighth season in that role. Landeskog was the youngest captain in NHL history when he assumed the job at 19 years, 286 days, a title he held for four years before Connor McDavid surpassed him on Oct. 5, 2016 (19 years, 266 days). Only six active captains have worn the "C" for a longer period of time.
