Today, these are hiking destinations and sightseeing points for both the Sámi and the non-Sámi local population, as well as a few non-local visitors. Many of these visitors leave objects at the sites, such as parts of recently slaughtered reindeer, clothing, coins, toys, sweet wrappers and toilet paper. This indicates that visitors have different levels of knowledge about and reverence for the traditional significance of these places. Through repeated surveys over several years, we also observed a certain development and change in the number and character of these depositions, as well as a variation in depositions between different sites. A series of interviews with various users and key stakeholders were performed to clarify the reasons for these changing practices, as well as what individuals and groups visit these sites, their motivation for doing so and for leaving specific objects, and what potential conflict of interest there is between different users. Furthermore, we surveyed what information has been available to the public about these sites and their significance in Sámi religion and cultural history over time. The results show that a diverse group of individuals visit the sites for a variety of reasons, and that there are contrasting views on their use, even among different Sámi stakeholders. While it is difficult to limit the knowledge and use of these places because they are already well known, more information about old Sámi ritual practices and appropriate behaviour at such sites may mediate latent conflicts and promote a better understanding of the importance of offering sites in both past and present Sámi societies. Introduction There have been many ways of relating to old Sámi offering sites, and there have been many ways of safeguarding them. In Norway, cultural heritage sites are generally recorded and mapped for land planning purposes and preservation. However, there are Sámi traditions for secrecy around certain offering sites, and a traumatic history of irreverence towards Sámi ritual sites and practices has contributed further to secrecy about old graves and offering sites. To some extent, Sámi cultural heritage authorities in Norway have maintained that offering sites that are automatically protected by law should be recorded only in password-protected databases (Fossum and Norberg 2012, pp. 19–23). The need to protect them in this way relates both to their general status as cultural heritage and their more specific and transcendent symbolic value as markers of the ethnic religion of the Sámi indigenous population in northern Fennoscandia. A post-Caledonian, NW-SE trending, dolerite dyke on Magerøy has a geochemicalsignature comparable to that of continental tholeiites. Clinopyroxenes from three samples of the dolerite gave K-Ar ages of ca. 312, ca. 302 and ca. 266 Ma, suggesting a Perrno-Carboniferous age. In view of low K20 contents of the pyroxenes and the possible presence of excess argon, it is argued that the most reliable estimate of the emplacement age of the dyke is provided by the unweighted mean value, namely 293 ± 22 Ma. This Late Carboniferous age coincides with the later stages of a major phase of rifting and crustal extension in adjacent offshore areas. The dyke is emplaced along a NW-SE trending fault. Parallel or subparallel faults on Magerøy and in other parts of northem Finnmark may thus carry a component of Carboniferous crustal extension in their polyphase movement histories. The oldest rocks, the Raipas Group or Series (Reitan 1963a) of Precambrian (Karelian) age, are represented by a sequence of greenschist facies metasediments, metavolcanics and intrusives. Lying unconformably upon the Raipas is a quartzite formation, a thin tillite, and a mixed shale and sandstone succession.     Welcome The Museum of Reconstruction for Finnmark and North-Troms Welcome to The Museum of Reconstruction for Finnmark and North- Troms. Our exhibition aims to convey the poignancy of the dramatic events of WWII; the forced evacuation. The conflagration and the restoration. Never before has any war had such dire consequences for the people of our country. You will be able to read about how people adjusted to forced evacuation and cave life during the arctic winter of 1944-45, how they rallied optimism and faith, and by dint of sheer willpower built their new homes. See what happened when multicultural communities were "Norwegianised", standardised and modernised. The museum addresses our recent past and the memories of people who are still alive; our parents and grandparents. WWII has affected every one of us, and The Museum of Reconstruction aims to be a treasure house for all our stories. This handbook is meant to help you find your way around the exhibition, though it does not pretend to be a complete guide. Usually, the auditorium will harbour temporary exhibitions of an artistic or historic nature. Please contact our staff for further information. We hope all our visitors will feel stimulated and enlightened by their stay. Empidoidea (Diptera) from Finnmark, northern Norway. Norwegian Journal of Entomology 60, 201–245. Records of 215 species of Empidoidea from Finnmark, northern Norway, are presented based partly on material collected in 2010 during a survey of freshwater insects and insects inhabiting humid habitats in the region, partly on older material. Of these, one species belongs to Brachystomatidae, 88 to Empididae, 67 to Hybotidae and 59 species to Dolichopodidae. Eight species are recorded for the first time from Norway, namely Rhamphomyia (Megacyttarus) paradoxa Wahlberg, 1844; R. (Pararhamphomyia) breviventris Frey, 1913 (Empididae); Bicellaria uvens Melander, 1928; Oedalea freyi Chvála, 1983; Platypalpus sordidus (Zetterstedt, 1838) (Hybotidae); Campsicnemus articulatellus (Zetterstedt, 1843); Hydrophorus geminus Frey, 1915; Rhaphium holmgreni (Mik, 1878); and R. tridactylum (Frey, 1915) (Dolichopodidae). A checklist of the 225 species of Empidoidea so far known to occur in Finnmark is provided.
