It took 7 years of labor, slowly clawing shovels of earth from the ground in a 363-mile trek across the wilderness of New York State. Through the use of many references, this paper attempts to describe this remarkable construction project. Additionally, it describes the early operation of the canal and its impact on the daily life on or near the canal‘s winding path across the state. -

Andrew Bartow and the Cement That Made the Erie Canal
ANDREW BARTOW AND THE CEMENT THAT MADE THE ERIE CANAL GERARD KOEPPEL ULY 1817 WAS A GOOD MONTH for DeWitt Clinton. On the first of July, he was inaugurated in Albany as gover nor of New York. On July 4th, ground was broken outside the village of Rome for the Erie Canal, the great water way project that would make New York the Empire State and New York City the commercial center of the western world, and would give Clinton, as the canal's strongest advocate, his most enduring fame. Earlier in the year, Clinton had been elected president of the New-York Historical Society, succeed cou ing the late Gouverneur Morris, his long-time collaborator in the Ca: Erie dream. Clinton had already followed Morris at the head of the state canal commission, on which both had served since its creation of ::r- cem at the beginning of the decade. On the eighteenth ofJuly 1817, Clinton did a bit of routine canal business that proved fortuitous for both the canal and for American engineering. He hired his friend Andrew Bartow as the canal commission's agent for securing land grants along the canal line from Utica west to the Seneca River, the portion that had been approved by the legislature.1 Bartow (1773 - 1861), described in contemporary accounts as "sprightly, pleasing," "genial and frank," and "by no means parsimonious in communicating," saddled his horse, and over the ensuing months gained voluntary grants from 90 percent of the farmers and other landowners he visited.2 The following spring, the grateful commissioners named Andrew Bartow their agent for all purchases of timber, plank, sand, and lime neces sary for canal construction.3 In this role, Bartow developed an American hydraulic cement, a discovery that enabled the comple tion of New York's canal and the birth of the country's canal age. -

They and their fathers before them have grown up with, lived with, made and developed the English pottery trade. The pot-bank and the shard ruck are, to them, as familiar, and as full of old associations, as the cowshed to the countryman or the nets along the links to the fishing popula- tion. To them any history of the development of their industry will be welcome. But potting is such a specialized industry, so confined to and associated with North Stafford- shire, that it is possible to study very clearly in the case of this industry the cause of its localization, and its gradual change from a home to a factory business. -

However as you enjoy reading this newsletter we can use your help remembering our history. I know from time to time old papers long-forgotten are found. Old stories handed down from generation to generation are remembered. Old relics stored safely away in some attic or basement are unearthed. Old friends and relatives who long ago left the Medina area to live elsewhere may themselves have papers, stories and relics dealing with the Medina Region. These, my friends, would be the kind of source material we would like to have for the Bugle. I’m sure Georgia Thomas, the editor of the Bugle, would be happy to have any information you might have dealing with early Orleans history, and I am sure that all the people of this region would be eternally grateful for your interest and cooperation in making the Medina Historical Society a very worthwhile organization. 18TH CENTURY STAFFORDSHIRE EARTHENWARE FIGURES by Pat Halfpenny Keeper of Ceramics, City Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent The primary purpose of this paper is to question the wisdom of using generic titles based on potters’ names as a means of classifying Staffordshire earthenware figures. It is generally acknowledged that some kind of classification is necessary and an alternative system bas ed on a technical/visual description will be suggested. The use of a potter’s name for generic grouping is often * : excused on the grounds that everyone knows that t ■ Astbury, Whicldon or Pratt means Astbury-typc, r' : Whieldon-type or Pratt-type. My contention is that any : s*’- * use of a potter’s name carries with it, directly or indirect . & ly, characteristics specifically related to the person whose name is used. For example in Plate 1 if we call the figure on the left Astbury-Whieldon we consciously or subconsciously fur ther classify it - made about 1750, after saltglaze before more sophisticated models. None of these things are true about this piece or necessarily about any other naive figure. A generic title based on a potter’s name also makes us complacent, we don’t have to discover the right name, we don’t have to consider a date as late as 1765 and we have a tidy sequence of figure develop ment from salt-glazed to pearlwarc. A few weeks ago in a Fontaine classroom five total strangers began a journey together that seemed impossible… A 25 page syllabus contained the only details to mastering the journey. The only way to survive was to work together as a team…a Majestic TEAM. As time went by the team fought through long and enduring journal entries, field trips, detailed lesson plans, and portfolios armed with pizzazz. Now, one final event stands between them and the rest of their future…A final case study. This case study will change the way these students view canals…and possibly the rest of their lives… Overview of Erie Canal • The Erie Canal stretched from Buffalo to Albany, Interstate 90 also stretches this length. • It would make best sense to take Interstate 90 to get to the important cities along the Erie Canal: Albany, Waterville, Cohoes, Rome, Canastota, Syracuse, Rochester, Pendleton and Buffalo. • Benjamin Wright was born on October 10, 1770 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. • Wright was chosen to be one of the three engineers to design and build the Erie Canal. • He was the chief engineer and directed all construction to what would be the greatest man made waterway in the world. • He was elected to the New York State Legislature in 1794 and appointed as a New York Country Judge. On August 24, 1842 • Benjamin Wright died at the age of 72. He is buried in the New York Marble Cemetery in Manhattan. Overview (cont.) • Jesse Hawley proposed the Erie Canal in 1805. • New York Governor DeWitt Clinton believed that if the seaboard cities, like New York City, were connected, travel time and expenses would be drastically cut and there would be more trade options. -

Camacho, and Hannah Rasmussen Senior Division Group Exhibit Board Words: 500 By chance, A.J. read an article about the Erie Canal and realized the historical jackhammer it was. It broke the barrier of the Appalachian mountains. It broke the barrier of westward migration. It broke the barrier of commerce, and it broke barriers of Irish immigrant stereotypes. Brad Utter of the New York State Museum told us, it was “the internet of its day.” Before the Canal, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and even Baltimore all had more trade traffic than New York City. Shipping between the Midwest and New York along the Erie Canal made the Empire City a commercial hub. Our research began from the general internet but soon expanded to correspondence with various experts and archives. We contacted Brad Utter, curator of the New York State Museum’s Erie Canal Exhibit, and Craig Williams of the Canal Society of New York State. They were crucial to breaking misconceptions about the canal and the vital role the Irish played in it. Primary sources on the Canal are inherently hard to come by––as Mr. Utter and Mr. Williams corroborated––luckily there are digital collections at the Library of Congress and New York State Archive. The nature of working with many sources needs careful scrutiny. Several writings that were attributed to be primary sources, had inconsistencies in author and date. We took a conservative approach and discarded these sources. An exhibit board was the most practical and symbolic category for an Erie Canal project.
