Al- though some characters stem entirely from my imagination, most are based on and inspired by my research co-participants, my academic colleagues, my friends, and my family. Most of these people are provided with pseudonyms to protect their identity and preserve their anonymity; a few retain their given names. Those whose real names are used have read the excerpts in which they appear and have agreed to be represented as such. I endea- vour to show these characters ‘embedded in the complexities of lived moments of struggle…attempting to preserve or restore the continuity and coherence of life’s unity in the face of unexpected blows of fate that call one’s meanings and values into question’ (Ellis & Bochner, 2000, p. 744). I’ve recreated characters’ lives by making choices about dialogue, language, imagery, metaphor, narration, and conflict to illustrate implicitly the research themes. Each chapter is set initially in Tess’s classroom. The twelve chap- ters following the prologue correspond to the twelve lessons of an imaginary dietetic course, ‘NUTRITION 430: Orientations to Dietetic Practice,’ offered over the span of a fall semester. A course outline and glossary are provided as supporting docu- ments. After each class, scenes shift to a variety of locations. I offer this book as the centrepiece from which an imaginary of di- etetic education and practice might emerge. I hope it will inspire readers to ask, ‘What if this were true? What then?’ The impulse for this work arose from my desire to understand the connections between what I know as dietetic education and the complex world in which it is situated and constituted. From the start, I was concerned with discovering ways to represent this research unconventionally. I searched ‘for alternative ways to push and move the already constituted towards new discursive prac- tices’ (Søndergaard, 2005, p. 298). During the research process, 8 Longing for Recognition I learned of myself through the Other. I engaged with the Other, assured that relationships form the crucible of my learning. My actions are premised on reciprocity, mutuality, and respect. Most of all, any knowing I claim exists in the dynamic embeddedness of these relationships. I believe that this research, like all pieces of writing, is a work of translation in the way Hrjinian (2000) describes translation as an epistemological project that ‘scruti- nizes the nature of knowing and the way in which any particular knowing is circumstantially embedded’ (p. 296). It is my hope that my translation provokes further dialogue on the subject of dietetic education and practice. It is my hope that this work pro- vokes dialogue that places the subject of dietetic education and practice in translation and leaves it there unsettled, leaves it there unkept. (Phelan, 1993, p. 16) Jacqui and her grandmother sat side by side in two oversized recliners watching The Wheel of Fortune – The Wheel, as her fam- ily called it, with affectionate familiarity. At seven o’clock, when The Wheel was on, Grandma was not to be disturbed. Despite knowing this, Jacqui could not wait to share her big news. ‘Grandma?’ Jacqui paused, her heart beating wildly. A hard swallow. ‘I’m pregnant.’ Jacqui’s throat was dry with nervous- ness. She didn’t take her eyes off Pat and Vanna. Grandma leaned forward in her recliner, her head turned to- wards Jacqui. Her crocheting fell into her lap. ‘Oh, Jacqui … what, how did this happen?’ It didn’t take much imagination to guess Grandma

Today we take up the book Sweet Caress - The Many Lives of Amory Clay, by William Boyd. In this masterpiece, Boyd, beautifully, brings to life Amory Clay, a female war photographer, in an inventive, clever and masterful way. The novel is written in the first person and interspersed with photos, bringing home the point that we are reading not just another book or autobiography but that of a photographer. The Prologue straightaway tells you about the first moment Clay gets hooked on photography, “In my hands I had the power to stop time, or so I fancied.” The book is divided into different parts, spanning almost a decade, as you travel with the protagonist on her life journey. Some parts, such as entries in her “The Barrandale Journal 1977,” are dotted throughout the book, recording flashbacks and other aspects of her life at that moment. The story starts with Amory, talking about her growing up years, the influence of her uncle, who first hands her a camera at the age of 7, and her way of killing perceptions of the people of her time. When she is born her father, who always wanted a son, gives her an androgynous name and announces that he has a son. The way she relates the incident makes it clear that she is a woman with a mind of her own, and as we watch her life unfold we see her not only unwilling to fit into a box but is restricted by no limits.

    86 William Boyd BRITISH FICTIONS AFTER DEVOLUTION: WILLIAM BOYD S CULINARY ARTS Dougal McNeill* Where are we to place William Boyd? This question, vexed enough for most novelists, given the variety and transformation in any life case because the obvious answer he is a contemporary British novelist introduces follow-up questions of a currently unanswerable nature. Where is Britain; and what does it mean, in the twenty-first century, to be a British novelist? These definitions, for much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, seemed not to matter greatly, as Britishness, in its local national variations, provided an ambiguous synthesising terrain for Scottish, Welsh and English writers. National identity in Scotland, Wales and England could, through the long reign of the British Empire, be assimilated more-or-less successfully into a broader British identity: British novelists were, quite simply, novelists from Britain. In the twenty- first century, with devolution and moves to full independence on the ascendant in Scotland, greater calls for Welsh autonomy, and the fact of multiculturalism a lived reality in English cities like Birmingham, London and Manchester, the question of what it is that makes an author British becomes rather more interesting, and rather more vexed. William Boyd, a Scottish author born in Africa and long resident in London, fits uneasily in accounts of the regionalisation .1 This may explain why, * Dougal McNeill teaches in the English Programme, Victoria University of Wellington. This entails him spending several nights at a sleep laboraotory in Greenwich where he is fitted with electrodes so that his pulse and mental activities can be recorded while he sleeps or at least tries to Tension builds right from the start, on as Lorimer has to negotiate the relentless foul temper of his boss, George Hogg, and a series of unexpected reorganisations within his firm. So what is the opposite of Serendip, a southern land of spice and warmth, lush greenery and hummingbirds, seawashed, sunbasted? It seems to me that the process of adding an extra integument is unique to our species and easily understandable - we all want extra protection for our soft and vulnerable bodies. I bought a few more books by this author so I hope they'll turn out more my type.

Graham; McMaster University – Religious Studies ABSTRACT A large part of modern Western philosophy defines selfhood as the self’s ability to master itself and psychological wellbeing as the actualization of self-integration. However, as this thesis argues, Kierkegaard’s understanding of longing for God challenges this understanding human identity, especially as it is articulated by Kant and the German Idealists. Through an examination of Kierkegaard’s Concluding Unscientific Postscript and his religious discourses, the thesis argues that Kierkegaard’s theology of longing both undermines the modern psychology understanding of autonomous selfhood and preserves a qualified understanding of autonomy. The thesis argues that Kierkegaard’s theology has much in common with Augustine’s understanding of longing in The Confessions. For Kierkegaard, the longing for God is not just a heteronomous desire for self-annihilation in God. The longing in question is relational and intellectual; it is a response to God’s illuminative self-revelation and self-communicative love. But as relational, the life lived in longing for God is not wholly autonomous either.
