Pip and Meredith are having a disagreement about a film they’ve just seen when Pip’s phone rings and a full-scale row about their marriage breaks out. In the course of ten arguments, we follow the repercussions, as Meredith’s parents, Chloe and Frank, her best-friend Jane, and Pip’s best-friend Tony, take sides and end up embroiled in arguments of their own. Vitriolic, razor-sharp and veracious, the arguments rake over past prejudices, expose unjust judgements and reveal difficult truths. Restless by William Boyd ‘Death may occur this very afternoon.’- Marcel Proust Historical Background – Real Spies Restless is based on the little known fact that there were a huge number of British spies in America in1940. American society and the political climate were markedly different from today. Eighty percent of Americans were opposed to war; the government was anti-interventionist; and there was no ‘special relationship’ with Britain, as there is now. The British government under Churchill was desperate for the US to join them in the war effort, so they set up a massive ‘British Security Coordination’ (BSC) office in New York. The BSC’s role was to ‘persuade’ the American people to help Britain. Employing up to 3000 personnel, the BSC planted propaganda with journalists and newspapers, manipulated radio with fake news, and generally played up the Nazi threat. The episode in the novel with Nazi maps of the Americas, is authentic. Of course it wasn’t the BSC that turned the tide of American involvement – it was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour and Hitler’s declaration of war on the US. James Bond is possibly the most well-known spy in fiction. But author Ian Fleming admits that ‘Bond is a highly romanticized version of a true spy. The real thing is...William Stephenson.’ Stephenson was a Canadian war hero and spymaster who ran the BSC office in New York – and no doubt an inspiration for the characters in Restless. The BSC’s covert actions are not part of the official canon of heroic World War Two stories. -

Marvel Comics Avengers Chronological Appearances By Bob Wolniak ased initially on the Bob Fronczak list from Avengers Assemble and Avengers Forever websites. But unlike Mr. B Fronczak’s list (that stops about the time of Heroes Reborn) this is NOT an attempt at a Marvel continuity (harmony of Marvel titles in time within the fictional universe), but Avengers appearances in order in approx. real world release order . I define Avengers appearances as team appearances, not individual Avengers or even in some cases where several individual Avengers are together (but eventually a judgment call has to be made on some of those instances). I have included some non-Avengers appearances since they are important to a key storyline that does tie to the Avengers, but noted if they did not have a team appearance. Blue (purple for WCA & Ultimates) indicates an Avengers title , whether ongoing or limited series. I have decided that Force Works is not strictly an Avengers title, nor is Thunderbolts, Defenders or even Vision/Scarlet Witch mini- series, although each book correlates, crosses over and frequently contains guest appearances of the Avengers as a team. In those cases, the individual issues are listed. I have also decided that individual Avengers’ ongoing or limited series books are not Avengers team appearances, so I have no interest in the tedious tracking of every Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, or Hank Pym title unless they contain a team appearance or x-over . The same applies to Avengers Spotlight (largely a Hawkeye series, with other individual appearances), Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Vision, Wonder Man, Hulk, She-Hulk, Black Panther, Quicksilver, Thunderstrike, War Machine, Black Widow, Sub-Mariner, Hercules, and other such books or limited series. -

The World of Books Sweet Caress William Boyd by Richa Mohan © Hello and welcome to another episode of the World of Books at EnglishWaves. Today we take up the book Sweet Caress - The Many Lives of Amory Clay, by William Boyd. In this masterpiece, Boyd, beautifully, brings to life Amory Clay, a female war photographer, in an inventive, clever and masterful way. The novel is written in the first person and interspersed with photos, bringing home the point that we are reading not just another book or autobiography but that of a photographer. The Prologue straightaway tells you about the first moment Clay gets hooked on photography, “In my hands I had the power to stop time, or so I fancied.” The book is divided into different parts, spanning almost a decade, as you travel with the protagonist on her life journey. Some parts, such as entries in her “The Barrandale Journal 1977,” are dotted throughout the book, recording flashbacks and other aspects of her life at that moment. The story starts with Amory, talking about her growing up years, the influence of her uncle, who first hands her a camera at the age of 7, and her way of killing perceptions of the people of her time. When she is born her father, who always wanted a son, gives her an androgynous name and announces that he has a son. The way she relates the incident makes it clear that she is a woman with a mind of her own, and as we watch her life unfold we see her not only unwilling to fit into a box but is restricted by no limits.
