Shlomo Aharon Kazarnovsky 1
HaRav HaChossid Rabbi Sholmo Aharon Kazarnovsky Memento From the Wedding of Yankele & Frumie Eidelman 10th Day of Tammuz 5781 ב״ה We thankfully acknowledge* the kindness that Hashem has granted us. Due to His great kindness, we merited the merit of the marriage of our children, the groom Yankele and his bride, Frumie. Our thanks and our blessings are extended to the members of our family, our friends, and our associates who came from near and far to join our celebration and bless our children with the blessing of Mazal Tov, that they should be granted lives of good fortune in both material and spiritual matters. As a heartfelt expression of our gratitude to all those participating in our celebration — based on the practice of the Rebbe Rayatz at the wedding of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin of giving out a teshurah — we would like to offer our special gift: a compilation about the great-grandfather of the bride, HaRav .Karzarnovsky ע״ה HaChossid Reb Shlomo Aharon May Hashem who is Good bless you and all the members of Anash, together with all our brethren, the Jewish people, with abundant blessings in both material and spiritual matters, including the greatest blessing, that we proceed from this celebration, “crowned with eternal joy,” to the ultimate celebration, the revelation of Moshiach. May we continue to share in each other’s simchas, and may we go from this simcha to the Ultimate Simcha, the revelation of Moshiach Tzidkeinu, at which time we will once again have the zechus to hear “Torah Chadashah” from the Rebbe. -
Words, Wickedness, and Charlottesville
The World of Lubavitch A publication of Chabad-Lubavitch, Toronto SEPTEMBER 2017 Vol. 43 No. 2 (148) TISHREI 5778 Words, Wickedness, and Charlottesville By Shlomo Yaffe In classic Judaic philosophy, worldly existence is divided into four strata: The inanimate, the growing (vegetative), the liv- ing (animal life) and the speaking (human). It seems curious that we do not describe the human as “thinker” or “engineer” or by any other quality that humans exclusively possess. The answer seems to be that the true potential of humanity, for good or evil, lies in the capacity for speech. The individual human can accomplish but little. All the accomplishments and disasters wrought by humanity are by virtue of communication. The accomplishment of the first farmer or shepherd lay in inspir- ing a group of people to work together to create nutrition and raiment in a new way that one person thought of. This was through words, through communication. All of hu- man power has always been an expression of a plurality united and directed by words. Abraham and Sarah taught monotheis- tic decency by words. Pharaoh enslaved the people of Israel by words of fear and prejudice directed at the Egyptians. Beliefs promulgated by words held peoples in the thrall of autocracy, and beliefs expressed in words convinced yet others to throw off those chains. The fate of the Armenians in 1915-17 was woven of words— in hate-filled sermons and telegraphed instructions. The power of Hitler was in his words that convinced German people to join together in utter evil. It was words over radio that set in mo- tion the Rwandan massacre. -

UNVERISTY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Spiritual Narrative in Sound and Structure of Chabad Nigunim A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Music by Zachary Alexander Klein 2019 © Copyright by Zachary Alexander Klein 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Spiritual Narrative in Sound and Structure of Chabad Nigunim by Zachary Alexander Klein Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Richard Dane Danielpour , Co-Chair Professor David Samuel Lefkowitz, Co-Chair In the Chabad-Lubavitch chasidic community, the singing of religious folksongs called nigunim holds a fundamental place in communal and individual life. There is a well-known saying in Chabad circles that while words are the pen of the heart, music is the pen of the soul. The implication of this statement is that music is able to express thoughts and emotions in a deeper way than words could on their own could. In chasidic thought, there are various spiritual narratives that may be expressed through nigunim. These narratives are fundamental in understanding what is being experienced and performed through singing nigunim. At times, the narrative has already been established in Chabad chasidic literature and knowing the particular aspects of this narrative is indispensible in understanding how the nigun unfolds in musical time. ii In other cases, the particular details of this narrative are unknown. In such a case, understanding how melodic construction, mode, ornamentation, and form function to create a musical syntax can inform our understanding of how a nigun can reflect a particular spiritual narrative. This dissertation examines the ways in which musical syntax and spiritual parameters work together to express these various spiritual narratives in sound and structure of nigunim. -

The Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach responded with the following letter which he sent to them through their mashpi’im, R’ Nissan Nemenov and R’ Shlomo Chaim Kesselman, respectively. This letter is a foundational letter (#1373 in Igros Kodesh vol. 5) which applies to all tmimim as can be seen in the Rebbe’s letter to the mashpi’im (see letter #1367 and #1372) asking them to explain it to their talmidim and sending references to maamarim which discuss its theme. In a letter to R’ Shlomo Chaim, the Rebbe writes “since you write that you read aloud the letter I wrote to some of the talmidim regarding plowing and sowing to the other students also, perhaps it would worthwhile to publicize it at the other classes in the Lud Yeshiva as well…” — FREE TRANSLATION — plowed and sown field, so too is it with [Divine] blessings — that the recipient .must preface it with plowing and sowing ב“ה, כ“ז טבת, תשי“ב But [when this is done,] even a relatively ברוקלין. -

It was compiled and written in the Hebrew language by a cousin, Harav Shneur Zalman Berger. It has now been translated to English by Eliyahu Baron, and is presented to you Levin on Chof Zayin Teves שי‘ in the pages that follow, in honor of the Bris of Shoel 5781. Reading this book, you will learn about the lives of Reb Shoel Moshe and Mrs. Chaya Liba a”h, whose home in Tashkent was one of the centers of the Chabad community in that city for many years. The secret minyan, kaparos, matza baking, and all matters of holiness were hosted in their home and yard. They continued their work once they reached Eretz Yisroel, where Reb Moshe did much for the good of the immigrants from the Soviet Union in general, and his brothers, the chassidim who lived in Nachalas Har Chabad, in particular. His wife, Mrs. Chaya Liba helped him in this, and would also host students from public schools for Shabbos and Yom Tov, as was done those years in Nachalas Har Chabad. -

Vaad Hakohol of Crown Heights
11 Reserve the Date: ELECTIONS -SSUNDAY, 2 IYAR, APRIL 30 VAAD HAKOHOL OF CROWN HEIGHTS What did the Rebbe mean when he said; “This is not Russia!”? () When the Vaad Hakohol announced that elections will be held for addi- tional Rabbomim we made it very clear that these elections will be open, honest and transparent. As the Rebbe said very clearly, “This is not Russia.” What worked in Russia will not work here in a democratic and open society. This means anyone is free to recommend qualified candidates for the Beis Din. It means legitimate elections that offer the voters real choices, not “yes or no” on a single unopposed candidate. It means engaging objective outside monitors to supervise the entire election process so that no one should have any doubts regarding the elections outcome. It means involving netzigim from a range of local shuls to act as observers and make sure nothing underhanded takes place. Reserve the Date: ELECTIONS -SSUNDAY, 2 IYAR, APRIL 30 22 Unfortunately the last election in 5763 failed to conform to even minimal standards of democratic process. To begin with, there was only a single candidate. This was the sort of practice the Rebbe was referring to as “This is not Russia!” Furthermore, the Vaad Hakohol at that time – with the signatures of Yaakov Herzog, Nochum Gross and Chanina Sperlin – wrote in their announcement of 9 Marcheshvon 5763 as follows: “...The Rebbe has instructed us that the appointment of Rabbonim should be through the participation of the entire Kehillah* by public mandate, therefore with the consent of Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba Shlita, we would like to inform you tht G-d willing elections will take place Sunday 21 of Marcheshvon 5763… “At this time you will have an opportunity to elect … Rabbi Yaakov Schwei, who currently is assisting the B”D in its many duties and is willing to serve as a full time Rov and Member of the B”D as necessary. -
