PAGE 2 story Once when Reb Chaim Gutnik of Australia entered the Rebbe’s room for a yechidus, he was startled to see that the Rebbe’s eyes were closed, and it was discernible that there were tears coming out from the Rebbe’s eyes. From previous yechidissin he knew this was not a regular occurrence. The Rebbe would always greet him (and others) with a large smile as if he said Baruch Habah, and here the Rebbe didn’t even acknowledge him. However, he understood that there definitely is a reason for this and he remained quiet, staying a short distance away from the Rebbe’s table and waited. After a few seconds, which felt like a long time the Rebbe opened up his eyes and apologized. Being that he had an extremely close and open relationship with the Rebbe, he asked the Rebbe if everything is ok, if the Rebbe is feeling any pain chas v’sholom. The Rebbe assured him, that he is Boruch Hashem feeling fine and the tears are for a different reason. “Right now”, the Rebbe said, “there is a young couple in the airport about to depart on their shlichus... The wife is the only daughter in the family and is extremely close with her mother. So although all of her older brothers went on shlichus, the parents always had other children who were in the house or lived nearby.” “Now”, the Rebbe said, “the mother is saying goodbye to her beloved daughter and there are tears in her eyes. Yes these tears are tears of happiness, but nevertheless, they are tears of a Jewish woman whose nest is now going to be empty, for good reasons, but empty nevertheless. So I too participated in this momentous moment of theirs”. Then the Rebbe proceeded with the yechidus. Lesson: The Rebbe feels the joys and sorrows of all Yidden, and especially the Rebbe’s Shluchim who the Rebbe accompanies along every step of their Shlichus. the Rebbe’s eyes were closed, and it was discernible that there were tears coming out from his eyes. HaRav HaChossid Rabbi Sholmo Aharon Kazarnovsky Memento From the Wedding of Yankele & Frumie Eidelman 10th Day of Tammuz 5781 ב״ה We thankfully acknowledge* the kindness that Hashem has granted us. Due to His great kindness, we merited the merit of the marriage of our children, the groom Yankele and his bride, Frumie. Our thanks and our blessings are extended to the members of our family, our friends, and our associates who came from near and far to join our celebration and bless our children with the blessing of Mazal Tov, that they should be granted lives of good fortune in both material and spiritual matters. As a heartfelt expression of our gratitude to all those participating in our celebration — based on the practice of the Rebbe Rayatz at the wedding of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin of giving out a teshurah — we would like to offer our special gift: a compilation about the great-grandfather of the bride, HaRav .Karzarnovsky ע״ה HaChossid Reb Shlomo Aharon May Hashem who is Good bless you and all the members of Anash, together with all our brethren, the Jewish people, with abundant blessings in both material and spiritual matters, including the greatest blessing, that we proceed from this celebration, “crowned with eternal joy,” to the ultimate celebration, the revelation of Moshiach. May we continue to share in each other’s simchas, and may we go from this simcha to the Ultimate Simcha, the revelation of Moshiach Tzidkeinu, at which time we will once again have the zechus to hear “Torah Chadashah” from the Rebbe.

UNVERISTY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Spiritual Narrative in Sound and Structure of Chabad Nigunim A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Music by Zachary Alexander Klein 2019 © Copyright by Zachary Alexander Klein 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Spiritual Narrative in Sound and Structure of Chabad Nigunim by Zachary Alexander Klein Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Richard Dane Danielpour , Co-Chair Professor David Samuel Lefkowitz, Co-Chair In the Chabad-Lubavitch chasidic community, the singing of religious folksongs called nigunim holds a fundamental place in communal and individual life. There is a well-known saying in Chabad circles that while words are the pen of the heart, music is the pen of the soul. The implication of this statement is that music is able to express thoughts and emotions in a deeper way than words could on their own could. In chasidic thought, there are various spiritual narratives that may be expressed through nigunim. These narratives are fundamental in understanding what is being experienced and performed through singing nigunim. At times, the narrative has already been established in Chabad chasidic literature and knowing the particular aspects of this narrative is indispensible in understanding how the nigun unfolds in musical time. ii In other cases, the particular details of this narrative are unknown. In such a case, understanding how melodic construction, mode, ornamentation, and form function to create a musical syntax can inform our understanding of how a nigun can reflect a particular spiritual narrative. This dissertation examines the ways in which musical syntax and spiritual parameters work together to express these various spiritual narratives in sound and structure of nigunim.

Leinenweber DAVID COLEMAN HEADLEY ) GOVERNMENT’S POSITION PAPER AS TO SENTENCING FACTORS The United States of America, by and through its attorney, Gary S. Shapiro, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, respectfully submits the following as its position paper as to sentencing factors and objections to the Presentence Report: I. Introduction Determining the appropriate sentence for David Headley requires consideration of uniquely aggravating and uniquely mitigating factors. Headley played an essential role in the planning of a horrific terrorist attack. His advance surveillance in India contributed to the deaths of approximately 164 men, women, and children, and injuries to hundreds more. Undeterred by the shocking images of death and destruction that came out of Mumbai in November 2008, Headley traveled to Denmark less than two months later to advance a plan to commit another terrorist attack. Headley not only worked at the direction of Lashkar e Tayyiba for years, but also with members of al Qaeda. There is little question that life imprisonment would be an appropriate punishment for Headley’s incredibly serious crimes but for the significant value provided by his immediate and extensive cooperation. Case: 1:09-cr-00830 Document #: 358 Filed: 01/22/13 Page 2 of 20 PageID #:2893 As discussed in this and other filings, the information that Headley provided following his arrest and in subsequent proffer sessions was of substantial value to the Government and its allies in its efforts to combat international terrorism.

FOREWORD An Inner Resolve IN ONE SECTION OF HIS MEMOIRS of Lubavitch, after writing at length about the importance of regular tevilah for purity, the eminent tomim and senior Lubavitcher rov Reb Shmaryahu Sassonkin concludes: “Despite the fact that tevilah was very much valued, still people in Lubavitch never told anyone to toivel, for it was something that depended on one’s personal feeling. Some felt the need for daily tevilah – and since the mikvah was not far from the zal and was always open, it didn’t take much time; some toiveled on Mondays and Thursdays when the Torah is read. But everyone toiveled on Erev Shabbos and on Shabbos for the holiness of Shabbos.” WHAT WAS INDEED THE PROBLEM with speaking about tevilah? If they didn’t want to burden the students, couldn’t they make it voluntary? But why not encourage it at least to some extent? In Tomchei Temimim of Lubavitch, the leading quality around which all farbrengens revolved was pnimiyus, inner resolve, and the ridding of chitzoniyus, external motivation. They didn’t only disdain doing mitzvos for ulterior motives or displaying a hiddur for others to admire – for such a person is simply serving himself – but even worthy conduct aimed towards becoming a “good chossid” was considered chitzoniyus, since it In Tomchei Temimim didn’t rise from a genuine appreciation for that practice. of Lubavitch, the In our generation, many such practices have been standardized. And justifiably so: The bochurim in Lubavitch who were continuously leading quality engaged in thorough avoda knew where they stood and they climbed steadily.
