Shofar Should Be Sounded Even When Rosh Hashanah Falls on Shabbos And, Indeed, Was Sounded on Such a Day in the Beis Hamikdash and Aits Surroundings
מאוצרות יו"ט של ראש השנה שחל להיות בשבת ROSH HASHANAH THAT FALLS ON SHABBOS SELECTIONS FROM SEFER HASICHOS INSIGHTS INTO THE HOLIDAYS BY THE LUBAVITCHER REBBE מאוצרות ספר השיחות SELECTIONS FROM SEFER HASICHOS ___ Translated and Annotated by Rabbi Eliyahu Touger and Rabbi Sholom Ber Wineberg • ראש השנה ROSH HASHANAH 2 ספר השיחות | ראש השנה ראש השנה | ROSH HASHANAH SEFER HASICHOS 5749, VOL. 2, P. 703FF. Adapted from a sichah delivered on Shabbos Parshas Nitzavim-Vayeilech, 5749 Introduction ccording to Scriptural Law, the shofar should be sounded even when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos and, indeed, was sounded on such a day in the Beis HaMikdash and Aits surroundings. Nevertheless, at present, we do not sound it on Shabbos because the Sages instituted a safeguard, forbidding the observance of the mitzvah lest an unlearned person desire to hear the sounding of the shofar, not know how to sound it himself, and carry it in the public domain to a colleague to sound it for him.1 Approximately 250 years ago, the Alter Rebbe posed the following question:2 Is it appropriate to bypass a mitzvah of such great spiritual import due to concern over the mere possibility that an unlearned person might violate the Shabbos prohibitions? In resolution, he explains that the spiritual quality of Shabbos generates an arousal in the spiritual realms comparable to that of sounding the shofar. Hence, the Sages felt justified in instituting that safeguard. Every one of the later Lubavitcher Rebbeim discussed this question raised by the Alter Rebbe and his explanation, each in his own style. -

Vaad Hakohol of Crown Heights
11 Reserve the Date: ELECTIONS -SSUNDAY, 2 IYAR, APRIL 30 VAAD HAKOHOL OF CROWN HEIGHTS What did the Rebbe mean when he said; “This is not Russia!”? () When the Vaad Hakohol announced that elections will be held for addi- tional Rabbomim we made it very clear that these elections will be open, honest and transparent. As the Rebbe said very clearly, “This is not Russia.” What worked in Russia will not work here in a democratic and open society. This means anyone is free to recommend qualified candidates for the Beis Din. It means legitimate elections that offer the voters real choices, not “yes or no” on a single unopposed candidate. It means engaging objective outside monitors to supervise the entire election process so that no one should have any doubts regarding the elections outcome. It means involving netzigim from a range of local shuls to act as observers and make sure nothing underhanded takes place. Reserve the Date: ELECTIONS -SSUNDAY, 2 IYAR, APRIL 30 22 Unfortunately the last election in 5763 failed to conform to even minimal standards of democratic process. To begin with, there was only a single candidate. This was the sort of practice the Rebbe was referring to as “This is not Russia!” Furthermore, the Vaad Hakohol at that time – with the signatures of Yaakov Herzog, Nochum Gross and Chanina Sperlin – wrote in their announcement of 9 Marcheshvon 5763 as follows: “...The Rebbe has instructed us that the appointment of Rabbonim should be through the participation of the entire Kehillah* by public mandate, therefore with the consent of Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba Shlita, we would like to inform you tht G-d willing elections will take place Sunday 21 of Marcheshvon 5763… “At this time you will have an opportunity to elect … Rabbi Yaakov Schwei, who currently is assisting the B”D in its many duties and is willing to serve as a full time Rov and Member of the B”D as necessary. -

Attitudes Toward the Study of Zohar and Lurianic Kabbalah, from the Dawn of Chasidism to Present Day Chabad
57 Attitudes toward the Study of Zohar and Lurianic Kabbalah, from the Dawn of Chasidism to Present Day Chabad By: CHAIM MILLER In the contemporary Chabad community, study of the primary texts of Kabbalah is not emphasized. Chabad Chasidic thought (Chasidus) is studied extensively, as are the sermons (sichos) of the Lubavitcher Reb- bes, texts that themselves are rich in citations from, and commentary on, Kabbalistic sources. However, for reasons I will explore in this essay, Kabbalah study from primary texts, such as the Zohar and works of Rabbi Yitzchak Luria (Arizal), is relatively uncommon in Chabad. This has been noted by the Seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe himself: “Generally speaking, Kabbalah study was not common, even among Chabad Chasidim.”1 Is this omission intentional, a matter of principle? Or is Kabbalah study deemed worthwhile by Chabad, but neglected merely due to the priority of other activities? 1 Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, Toras Menachem, Hisvaduyos 5745 (Vaad Hanachos Lahak, 1985) volume 2, p. 1147. The Rebbe stressed that “Kabbalah study was not common, even among Chabad Chasidim” since, of the various strands of Chasidic thought, Chabad Chasidus is particularly rich in its use of Kabbalistic sources (see below section “Lurianic Kabbalah in Early Chabad”). One might therefore expect that Chabad Chasidim in particular might be in- clined to Kabbalah study. Rabbi Chaim Miller was educated at the Haberdashers’ Aske’s School in London, England and studied Medical Science at Leeds University. At the age of twenty-one, he began to explore his Jewish roots in full-time Torah study. Less than a decade later, he published the best-selling Kol Menachem Chumash, Gutnick Edition, which made over a thousand discourses of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe easily accessible to the layman.
