  • ¡Alerta Los Pueblos!
Vicente Rojo, 1939 - 2 - 1.

  • From Silence to Historical Consciousness the Holocaust and WWII in Finnish History Politics
From Silence to Historical Consciousness The Holocaust and WWII in Finnish History Politics ANTERO HOLMILA JOUNI TILLI ABSTRACT: Despite the fact that there are similar trajectories and turning points between Finland’s and other European countries’ responses to the Holocaust, it is still the case that trends in Holocaust studies and key debates within the field have had less impact on Finnish understanding of the Holocaust than one might suspect. Instead, as this article examines, the way in which Finland’s Holocaust awareness has been developing since the end of the war in general, and in the 2000s in particular, has been intimately linked with the Finnish understanding of its own role in WWII. This tendency was most clearly illustrated in the controversy that took place during 2003 and 2004 with the publication of Elina Sana’s book Luovutetut [The Extradited].

  • The Primacy of Land Power
4 The Primacy of Land Power ower in international politics is largely a product of the military forces that a state possesses. Great powers, however, can acquire P different kinds of fighting forces, and how much of each kind they buy has important implications for the balance of power. This chap ter analyzes the four types of military power among which states choose-independent sea power, strategic airpower, land power, and nuclear weapons- to determine how to weigh them against each other and come up with a useful measure of power. I make two main points in the discussion below. First, land power is the dominant form of military power in the modern world. A state's power is largely embedded in its army and the air and naval forces that support those ground forces. Simply put, the most powerful states possess the most formidable armies. Therefore, measuring the balance of land power by itself should provide a rough but sound indicator of the relative might of rival great powers. Second, large bodies of water profoundly limit the power-projection capabilities of land forces. When opposing armies must cross a large expanse of water such as the Atlantic Ocean or the English Channel to attack each other, neither army is likely to have much offensive capability against its rival, regardless of the size and quality of the opposing armies. 83 84 THE TRAGEDY OF GREAT POWER POLITICS The stopping power of water is of great significance not just because it is a central aspect of land power, but also because it has important conse quences for the concept of hegemony.

  • LANDSCAPES of LOSS and DESTRUCTION Sámi Elders’ Childhood Memories of the Second World War
LANDSCAPES OF LOSS AND DESTRUCTION Sámi Elders’ Childhood Memories of the Second World War Eerika Koskinen-Koivisto, University of Jyväskylä Oula Seitsonen, University of Helsinki The so-called Lapland War between Finland and Germany at the end of the Second World War led to a mass-scale destruction of Lapland. Both local Finnish residents and the indigenous Sámi groups lost their homes, and their livelihoods suffered in many ways. The narratives of these deeply traumatic experiences have long been neglected and suppressed in Finland and have been studied only recently by academics and acknowledged in public. In this text, we analyze the interviews with four elders of one Sámi village, Vuotso. We explore their memories, from a child’s perspective, scrutinizing the narration as a multilayered affective process that involves sensual and embodied dimensions of memory.1 Keywords: Second World War, Sámi, post-colonialism, memory, Lapland Introduction in 1944, due to the so-called Lapland War, a conflict Linguistically, “loss” suggests absence, but this between Finland and the former ally, Nazi Germany. loss of home and community has an ongoing Most Laplanders were eventually able to return to emotional presence.
