By fostering debate and diplomacy amongst the delegates while hosting an esteemed professional as a guest lecturer, &MUN VII will help educate and inspire the next generation of diplomats, politicians, and academics. After a year of planning, &MUN's next installment represents the combined efforts of our devoted secretariat, the International Relations Club at William & Mary, the William & Mary Administration, and the Williamsburg community. As a relatively new conference, we continue to grow year after year, and this year &MUN is predicted to be larger than it ever has before. Combining an excellent reputation at W&M and on the collegiate Model UN circuit with an unwavering dedication to the conference's success, we ensure that &MUN will continue to grow and prosper well into the future. William & Mary has long had a tradition of excellence, and we as a secretariat hope to carry on this tradition by hosting a conference that presents insight into the kind of diplomacy and negotiation that is vital to the field of international relations. Pushing the bounds of traditional conferences by offering unique and unprecedented committee topics, &MUN VII will challenge its delegates like never before. This conference aims to be an experience that teaches our delegates valuable lessons and helps them learn the skills required for a fulfilling career in the field of International Relations. &MUN has many incredible plans for this coming iteration and we are excited to have the privilege of hosting you here in Williamsburg! Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions. We hope that you enjoy your time in Williamsburg! All the best, Molly Dinneen &MUN VII Secretary-General 3 &------------- Letter from the United Nations Secretary-General UNITED NATIONS NATIONS UNIES THE SECRETARY-GENERAL MESSAGE TO THE SEVENTH ANNUAL WILLIAM AND MARY COLLEGIATE MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE, (&MUN VII) Williamsburg, 11-14 April 2019 Thank you for taking part in the Model United Nations and for getting involved in some of the biggest issues of our time: peace, climate action, sustainable development and human rights. Our world has achieved remarkable progress in recent years, from increasing life expectancy to reducing child mortality. In the span of just one generation, the number of people living in extreme poverty has been reduced by more than a billion. But these gains face big risks. Climate change is an existential threat and the defining challenge of our time. You are the first generation to grow up in the shadow of climate change and the last who can prevent its worst consequences. The world needs your strong engagement to increase ambition, to cut emissions and to hold leaders to account. The United Nations is the platform for action on climate change, on growing inequality, on harnessing new technologies for the good of all, and on all global issues that cannot be addressed by any one country alone. Our blueprint is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development - the globally-agreed plan for dignity, peace and prosperity on a healthy planet. To achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, we need a great global mobilization that goes beyond governments, bringing people together from all walks of life and showing that international cooperation can deliver for everyone. The voices of women and girls, and of young people, are essential. That is why the Model United Nations is so important. Thank you for getting involved, and for standing up for the shared values of all humanity. I hope you will take what you learn here into your lives, to your family and friends and to the wider world. The United Nations counts on you to be agents of change as we strive to build a better future for all. 4 &------------- Key Note Speaker: Demian Smith Demian Smith Counselor for Political and Economic Affairs U.S. Embassy Wellington, New Zealand Demian Smith assumed duties as Counselor for Political and Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand, in 20"17.
