Additionally, Iceage has announced a Seek Shelter concert streaming Saturday, May 22nd at 8pm Eastern and 8pm Pacific. The concert will feature a performance of Seek Shelter in its entirety. Previewed on the band’s last North American tour, “Gold City” is a passage in Seek Shelter’s story of scorched-earth salvation. The American gospel and blues signatures present in previous single “Vendetta” reappear here as Elias Bender Rønnenfelt rousingly sings of a vast journey: “First there was I, then there was us // Off goes the layers, as written in dust // What you have lost, I shall provide // All that you le behind, I'll pick up the supplies // Latch on // Hold still, before I forget // Remain in this passing juncture // Let it swarm, let it sit.” Rønnenfelt comments: “At home and enraptured in the fleeting moment, the sky becomes technicolor in its makeshi lucidity. A culmination made so that everything felt briefly complete. Traffic lights and the setting sun through a polluted filter, shimmering and golden.” Watch Iceage’s Visualizer for “Gold City” A decade on from their first record, Iceage continue to harness their lives together through music. Their fih album, Seek Shelter, is a collection of songs radiating warmth and a profound desire for salvation in a world that’s spinning further and further out of control. Throughout, Rønnenfelt’s lyrics reach grand heights despite its classic opacity — he sings of taking shelter, of tranquil affections that threaten to combust, and of a limp-wristed god with a cavalcade of devotees in search of relief. His expressionist imagery consistently hinges on the divine. Seek Shelter was produced by Sonic Boom (Pete Kember of Spacemen 3), the band’s first outside producer, and mixed by Shawn Everett. The Art of Depression With Sonic Boom Bittles‘ Magazine Sonic Boom is not only a fantastic name for a band, it is also the nom de plume of Peter ›Sonic Boom‹ Kember, who was one of the founding members of the exceedingly excellent Spacemen 3. Spectrum is the only commercially available album he ever released under this name, yet it still stands as a momentous record that bewitches with its dense, layered sound. Released over 20 years ago, it isn’t of its time, or this time, or any time. In fact it is something else, separated from trends, fads or anything else which dilutes music to a turgid meaningless mess. By JOHN BITTLES Peter’s first band Spacemen 3 saw him, and close friend Jason Pierce (who later went on to form Spiritualized) play together with a varied assortment of musicians all linked together in their love of weird psychedelic rock. For almost ten years the band gave the world the type of scuzzy garage noise that most lost and alienated young teens only ever see in particularly vivid wet dreams. Sonic Boom. Photo by Xi Weg Since the split of Spacemen 3 back in 1991 Peter Kember has been releasing quality head music under various aliases including Spectrum (sublime indie rock) and E.A.R. (Experimental Audio Research) (strange drone type sounds). He is also equally well known as a producer having lent his production nous to the likes of MGMT, Panda Bear, Teen and, just recently, the ten tracks of psychedelic weirdness that make up the marvellous album Chambers by Lorelle Meets The Obsolete.

PLAYING THE BASS BASS THE PLAYING WITH THREE LEFT HANDS WILL CARRUTHERS ‘ Will Carruthers’ Playing The Bass With Three Left Hands is at the least the funniest rock memoir since Andrew Matheson’s Sick on You. Th e other two are probably phantoms. Playing the Bass with Th ree Left Hands tells the story of one of the most infl uential, revered and ultimately demented British bands of the 1980s, Spacemen 3. In classic rock n roll style they split up on the brink of their major breakthrough. As the decade turned sour and acid house hit the news, Rug- by’s fi nest imploded spectacularly, with Jason Pierce (aka Jason Spaceman) and Pete Kember (aka Sonic Boom) going their se- parate ways. • 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit".

10 000 RUSSOS (FUZZ CLUB RECORDS. PORTO,PT) 10,000 Russos are a formidable force within modern psychedelia; their industrial psych/post-punk has been charming fuzz-heads across the globe with its stomping, shamanic mantras and otherworldly krautrock slant. Following their debut album and recent split with The Oscillation, the Portuguese trio have released their huge second LP ‘Distress Distress’ on April 7 2017 via Fuzz Club Records. This record was heavily promoted with two huge european tours (one of 50 gigs, other of 60) during the years of 2017 and 2018. Alongside sold out club gigs in 14 different european countries they have been headliners in festivals like Spacefest in Gdansk, Fuzz Club Fest in Eindhoven, Paredes de Coura in Portugal, Psych in Bloom 3D Fest in Stuttgart or Label Mates Fest in London. 10,000 Russos have once again transcended the boundaries of psychedelia as we know it today; their dark, droning noise is twisted, distorted and pushed to its limit. ‘Distress Distress’ is so ritualistic and industrial it see’s their usual post-punk sound – a primal and celestial mix of The Fall, NEU! and Spacemen 3 – pushed within an inch of techno territory with its abrasive, metronomic rhythms. Since their debut self-titled LP,Russos have been touring Europe extensively and acquiring a cult-like following at a whiplash rate - their incredible performance at Liverpool Psych Fest was widely described as a stand-out set by numerous music publications and fuzz fiends-alike. With the entrance of second record‘Distress Distress’, the band are showing no sign of slowing down either – redefining psychedelia with every hiss of feedback.

  • Shelter Song”
March 24, 2021 For Immediate Release Iceage Unveil New Song/Video, “Shelter Song” New Album, Seek Shelter, Out May 7th on Mexican Summer photo credit - Jonas Bang Copenhagen’s Iceage unveil a new single/video, “Shelter Song,” from their new album, Seek Shelter, out May 7th on Mexican Summer. Following “Vendetta” and “The Holding Hand,” “Shelter Song” opens the record with a dirge-like drone that gives way to a wall of reverb. It sounds fuller and brighter than anything Iceage have committed to tape, signalling a clarity of clouds breaking. Elias Bender Rønnenfelt’s instantly recognizable voice is joined by the Lisboa Gospel Collective, who add an anthemic swell: “Come lay here right beside me // They kick you when you're up, they knock you when you're down // Some shielding from the fighting // They beat you from the le, they hit you from the right // Come lay here right beside me.” The video was directed by longtime friend and collaborator Catherine Pattinama Coleman, who has worked with the band on two previous videos. It offers a rare, intimate look into the band’s life in Copenhagen amongst family and friends. Coleman elaborates: “Iceage asked me if I wanted to direct the video for ‘Shelter Song.’ As a childhood friend of theirs, it was important for me to showcase our friendship and the people we share everyday life with. So instead of making a video full of symbolism or a staged performance, I wanted to make a private and personal video close to our hearts. Aer a crazy year of COVID-19, the world in flames and structural racism peaking at such an extent, I wanted to create a meaningful piece, especially being a woman of color and fully in my third trimester.

Press Release Art & Language Letters to The Jackson Pollock Bar in the Style of The Red Krayola Featuring Matthew Jesse Jackson John Coxon and J. Spaceman Thursday, October 24, 2019 504 West 24th Street, New York Doors: 6pm Performances: 6.30 – 8.30pm RSVP required: [email protected] Lisson Gallery New York is pleased to present a night of performance, discussion and music inspired by the pioneering work of Art & Language and their 40-year collaboration with The Red Krayola, a punk band founded in Houston, Texas, by Mayo Thompson and Frederick Barthelme in 1966. The evening will also feature a discussion with Art & Language, hosted by art historian Matthew Jesse Jackson, as well as a newly commissioned homage to some of The Red Krayola’s earliest live shows, composed by musicians J. Spaceman (of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized) and John Coxon (from Spring Heel Jack and the Treader label). After the conceptual art group known as Art & Language was formed in 1968 at Coventry College of Art in the UK, it quickly spread to New York where it centered on two important journals, Art-Language (1969-85) and then later The Fox (1975-76), by which time some 20 artists were connected in various ways with the name. It was around this time that an album entitled Corrected Slogans came out, marking the first collaboration between Art & Language in the UK and The Red Krayola, in which snippets and slogans from conceptual art theory and philosophical tracts were sung or chanted over music composed in response by Thompson’s band.
