Those are the ingredients that will allow The Pilgreens to spread the idea of a innovative and pure electric engine connecting Bangkok, Thailand and Toulouse, France from July to November 2015. The project Karen Koulakian, Ludwig Merz, and Rémy Fernandes-Dandré, students in International Management at IAE Toulouse (Graduate School of Management) in France, will drive 20,000 km across Eurasia with an electric Tuk Tuk, and will, throughout all of their journey, promote cleaner sources of energy and electric mobility. The three students set up a non-governmental organization, named The Pilgreens, built on the foundation of an environmentally-friendly and ambitious vision which is as follows: “To be a global driver of electric mobility through the promotion of sustainable projects in developing countries.” Here is their plan, or ‘recipe’, to make their optimism come true: • 20,000 km • 120 days • 15 countries • 3 friends • 3 wheels • 2 electric batteries • 1 solar cell ABOUT THE PILGREENS The founders Karen, Ludwig, and Rémy are young, studious, and ambitious, and they like to believe that out there, on the road and in the unknown, is where they will grow. They sure have different long-term perspectives, but their aspirations and desires led them to the doorstep of an exciting and insane life project, which as a whole is based on friendship, generosity, and humanity. The project will certainly benefit from their different educational and cultural backgrounds. LUDWIG MERZ, 27 • Silent thinker • Prefectionist (at least trying to be perfect) • Born and raised in German countryside • Likes the feel of freedom when not using energy, as a glider pilot • Enthusiastic reader • Studied industrial engineering at Munich University of Applied Sciences • Moved to France in 2012 • Is now exploring Asia while finishing his Master in International Management in Bangkok (CMMU) • Speaks English, German, French, Italian. Learns Spanish, Thai Page !3 of !17 THE PILGREENS KAREN KOULAKIAN, 25 • Extrovert human loving person • Music lover & singer • Loves to connect with people and cultures • Country of birth: Armenia • Country of adoption: France • Studied International Management at IAE Toulouse • Currently studying International Management (CMMU) and singing in Bangkok • Travels: Europe, Asia and Oceania • Speaks English, French, Armenian, Spanish. Learns Russian, Thai RÉMY FERNANDES-DANDRÉ, 23 • Challenge hunter (and killer eventually) • Adrenalinolic & always on-the-run • Loves W. Churchill, Nicolas Vagnier (French explorer) and Gospel • Country of birth: France (but lived in China, New-Zealand, England) • Studied International Management at IAE Toulouse • Currently he is the The Pilgreens' contact in Paris where he works for Young & Rubicam • Travels: Europe, Asia, North America, Oceania • Speaks English, French, Spanish, Chinese The three millennials are passionate about travels and cultures, and look forward to exploring every culture’s generosity and humanity on the way to France. Their slogan THE PILGREENS And the World is clean The Pilgreens intend to connect the numerous followers around the globe with a common purpose: the cleanness of our planet. The ‘green’ solutions promoted in their experiences are deployed to fulfill that purpose. Their vision To be a global driver of electric mobility through the promotion of sustainable projects in developing countries. Their core values GENEROSITY Generosity is known as Charity in the Bible and one of the core values of Buddhism. Therefore, it is a value that drives The Pilgreens during their life but also during their trip. Returning what they have received from humans to societies and people in need without asking them for any return is part of their initiative. Concretely they will stop along the way to help local people, and if they are able to raise sufficient funds they will donate some parts of it to the local communities on their way. Page !4 of !17 THE PILGREENS RESPECT In Thailand, respect is shown by the gesture of a ‘wai’. For The Pilgreens this value includes respect for the others but also respect for the environment. They respect that cultures and people they will get to know might be different from them. So this value also includes a challenge. Concretely, they will respect all the different stakeholders involved in the project. ENVIRONMENT The project itself lies in environmental considerations. Taking care of our planet and our future, as there is only one. The Pilgreens try to adjust their daily lives around this care. With their trip, they want to spread the word and invite also others to take action and to rethink their behaviour. Concretely, they wish to create a community of engaged individuals through an online platform and further on the development of sustainable projects. EDUCATION The Pilgreens will ensure they contribute to a global educational purpose. This will link back to the other values. Spreading the word and the idea is a chance of educating people towards a care for the future. Concretely, The Pilgreens will organize educational events in every city at schools and universities to educate people about environmental issues, solutions for cleaner transportation, evolution of our societies, and environmental care. NOBLE The Pilgreens consider their actions and ideas as noble. They fight to give people the opportunity to speak up for a noble cause and share opinions about environmental issues and the future of our societies. Concretely, they will show the world that you can not ignore that tail pipes damage our health, and that it needs to become cleaner for the sake of future generations. The goal Every piece of The Pilgreens’ project development aims at the achievement of one major goal: driving from Bangkok, Thailand, to Toulouse, France, by electric Tuk Tuk. Taking up the challenge with an electric Tuk Tuk means a lot to The Pilgreens. More than a mere trip across Eurasia, the main intention lies in pro-environmental and human-oriented considerations, since their generation, the Gen Y, will be shaping the future of planet Earth and its changing societies. Timeline October 2014: Sketch of the project including the route definition and feasibility study November-December 2014: Project planning and budget estimate 22th December 2014: The Pilgreens have a name! February 2015: Launch of social media platforms 4th February 2015: Set up of a non-profit organization January-June 2015: Sponsors-related communication and Tuk Tuk manufacturing 28th May 2015: Press conference with Bangkok medias at CMMU 10th June 2015: Delivery of the electric Tuk Tuk 15th July 2015: Departure of the TukTuk journey from Bangkok July to November 2015: Prospective travel experience on Tuk Tuk End of November 2015: Arrival in Toulouse Capitole 2-9 December 2015: attendance to COP 21 in Paris Page !5 of !17 THE PILGREENS Nevertheless, for The Pilgreens, it is definitely the story of a dream which will substantially impact their self- development thanks to a better understanding of their identities, personalities, and limits. The Pilgreens will benefit from the diverse and exciting opportunities on the way to Europe, mingling with locals’ cultures and promoting a greener world. In addition, this journey will be linking two prestigious universities -- the IAE Graduate School of Management in Toulouse, France, and the College of Management of Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand -- which, of course, support this cause. THE PILGREENS’ ORGANIZATION AND RESEARCH PROJECT Initiated with the completion of their Master’s degree at the IAE Toulouse, Karen, Ludwig, and Rémy are setting up a non-governmental organization with the aim of studying the needs of local populations in developing countries and contributing to sustainable mobility. The Pilgreens’ 20,000 km journey is in fact the catalyzing project of their entire organization, and also the cornerstone of their communication. The three students will use this prospective travel to capture local people’s attention and interest and start building a community of engaged individuals. This is a research project supported by IAE Toulouse. The Pilgreens’ intention will be doing some fieldwork and collecting qualitative information about the potential use of electric mobility in order to understand local populations’ needs. The Pilgreens will go through countries such as Kazakhstan, Armenia, or Bulgaria to collect information and identify the needs in mobility of local people. Subsequently, they will share the collected information on an online platform which will contain the potential solutions and projects that may change people’s lives. The final objective of the organization is to provide populations of developing countries with opportunities for a successful transition towards sustainable mobility, and ensure the switch from fuel-driven to electric-powered transportation.
