Conradina Native Plant Tour Results!

Thank you so much homeowners and volunteers! You all helped Conradina FNPS achieve another successful native plant garden tour! Current total is 190 garden tickets sold - fantastic! We had great weather and each one of you helped visitors appreciate the beau- ty and importance of native plants! It was so fun showing visitors butter- flies and also enjoying the native plant gardens. THANK YOU EVERYONE!

Carol’s Corner: The Quercus amongus! I am featuring trees this month. You may have noticed acorns dropping on your driveway, in your yard or on your car if you are parked under an oak tree. I bet you have even seen squirrels munching on acorns or even burying them to find later as a snack. Yes acorns! They only come from oak trees because they are the seeds that develop in to large tall trees. The picture shows a Live Oak Quercus virginiana and if you look closely there are acorns in the picture. I joke about the Quercus amongus because there about 26 different native to Florida. Sometimes on a field trip I am not always positive which of Oak so I joke it is "among-us". Their leaves look different on their stages of growth. Some are easier to ID because of the shape of their leaves. For example Turkey Oak (Q. laevis) you see in the Turkey Creek Sanctuary. The leaves of the Turkey Oak resemble the foot prints the turkey bird creates. Although I've heard Turkey Creek Sanctuary had a lot of the Turkey birds thus it's name. You will also see Sand Live Oak (Q. geminata), Chapman Oak (Q. chapmanii), and Water Oak (Q. nigra) there. Erna Nixon Park has wonderfully tall and wide Live Oaks. Erna Nixon Park also features Water Oaks, Myrtle Oaks (Q. myrtifolia) and Laurel Oaks (Q. laurifolia). I'm sure I have not named each oak in each park because each park is very diverse. A great way to positively ID an Oak tree is by it's acorn! The Live Oak has long slender acorns. In cold to tropical climates of North America, the Fagaceae family has about 200 oak species in the Quercus . Globally, there are about 600 Quercus oak tree species. Oaks are a prize to have in your landscape because it is very diverse and attracts birds, butterflies, moths and yes...squirrels. A new look for an old favorite The Florida Wildflower Foundation is excited to announce that the State Wildflower license plate has a new look!

The new design features two species of Coreopsis, Florida's state wildflower, and a vivid butterfly, increasing awareness of the vital pollinator/wildflower connection.

Since going on sale in 2000, the State Wildflower plate has raised more than $4.2 million for Florida's native wildflowers and plants, providing funds for education, planting and re- search projects throughout the state.

Now that the new look is here, the original State Wildflower plate design has been discon- tinued. If you have the original design, you'll automatically receive the new design the next time the state sends you a replacement plate (this will happen right before your plate is 10 years old).

If you'd like to switch to the new look before then or want to purchase your first State Wildflower license plate, you have two options: To make the switch with just a phone call, simply fill out this form. Or, visit your local county tax collector's office.

You'll pay a one-time fee to switch, which includes a $15 donation that supports work for wildflowers.

To learn more about the new design and the work the license plate makes possible, visit www.FlaWildflowers.org/support. Click to follow Florida's wildflowers on the web
